What's preventing him from creaming someone later on if thinking he can get away with it, then?

I keep seeing it said here that spanking causes fear. I don't agree. If you're spanking properly, its nothing to be afraid of, its just something you don't want. You can be afraid to do something because you don't want to get spanked, but replace "get spanked" with "get in trouble" and its the same thing. If you are getting spanked to the point that you are afraid of the spanking, then its called a beating at that point, and thats not good.

If the parents show them it's right, and if you look up to your parents, then the child thinks it is gong to be right too.

But Mars, there is other ways to save people's lives than hitting them.

I do think violence can in some cases be an acceptable means to do good. However in this situation you don't need to use it.

@Scribbane: Regardless, the end result, when spanking is deemed necessary, is a child who avoids a certain behavior only/or in part due to the possibility of punishment- I believe a parent should attempt to instill a sense of right and wrong in their child rather than reiterate the consequences of an action.

All great and wonderful... but how do you talk to a toddler who has not learned to speak yet?

Sometimes that slap on the hand, when they reach for the power outlet, or a slap on the behind when they are misbehaving is all that you have.

There is also the tone in your voice, which can alert them, but you may also need a slap to get the point accross. You can talk all you want, but they do not understand.

I know. It was just an example.

And I think what you do is good parenting.
