Joining Telvanni and Hlaalu Houses Bug
7 January 2004

I joined House Telvanni first and reached grandmaster, then I spoke with Duke Vedam Dren about his brother, Orvas Dren, and received a message that went something like, oh, so he's dead? well then i guess you're the grandmaster of house hlaalu.

When i checked then, i was a Hireling in House Hlaalu and could do the quests, although some conflict, ala Odirniran, where being in both Telvanni and Hlaalu i had to kill everyone there, but so far nothing earthshaking. I'm about to build a stronghold for Hlaalu now tho... and as i already have the Telvanni one and I guess I'll have to see if i can get two...

I found out you can get two strongholds, but Vedam Dren won't issue you another contract, so you'll have to steal it from him...

Bug Variant
Even if you don't kill Orvas Dren but speak to the Duke about the topic Camonna Tong after geting named Hortator of House Halaalu (I already solved the main quest, but the Dukes words indicate that getting named Halaalu-Hortator would be sufficient) you will become Hlaalu Retainer, even if you are already Archmagister of house Telvanni.

In that case the Duke mentions something like

As you have been named Hortator of House Halaalu, you have arranged yourself with Orvas Dren because you could not hold that possition against his will. So i will make you grandmaster of House Halaalu.
(very free quote, i don't remember the exact wording.) Perhaps someone could try it from the Redoran side, would be interesting if that works the same way.

Hlaalu Stronghold
5 August 2002

Once you reach Rank 6 or 7 in House Hlaalu, any councillor or quest giver will tell you who to contact to start the construction of your very own stronghold (though you can actually start the process anytime after Rank 4). Talk to Dondos Driler at the Council Manor in Balmora. He says you'll need to get a construction contract and a land deed in order to start the building. Travel to see Duke Vedam Dren in the Grand Council Chamber in Ebonheart to receive the contract (he'll only ask for a vow to help his people). You can buy the land deed from Baren Alen at the Hlaalu Treasury in Vivec (its base price is 5000 gold and is bought like a regular item, so a high mercantile skill and disposition could lower this significantly).

Return to Dondos with the deed and contract and the construction will begin. In a few days, you'll be prompted by an entry in your journal to talk with Driler. He'll provide the directions to your stronghold (the Odai Plateau, South of Balmora, past the Egg Mine, on the ridge) and ask you to check on its progress. The foreman on site, Durbul gro-Rush, will tell you that work should be finished within the week. Return to Dondos with the news.

After a few days, another journal entry will appear to inform you that the first phase of the stronghold has been finished.

Stronghold Phase 2
5 August 2002

Once your stronghold is completed, you can return to Dondos in Balmora who will tell you that you need to improve business near your stronghold, suggesting that you restore the nearby Shurdan-Raplay eggmine, located across the river. There are two things you must do: cure the blighted queen in the mine, and hire some workers. To cure the queen, simply cast a Cure Blight spell or scroll on the queen (scrolls can be bought from Hetmen Abelmawia in Gnisis or Pierlette Rostorad in Sadrith Mora).

As for the workers, talk to Dondos again and he'll suggest that you talk to some unemployed ones in Gnisis (Ilasour Tansumiran, North side of Gnisis between the Temple and the mines) and Tel Aruhn (now a slave in the market, talk to Savile Imayn). Once you've got one miner, return to Dondos to start the second phase of the stronghold.

You should receive another journal entry when the second phase of construction is complete.

Stronghold Phase 3
5 August 2002

Once the second phase of your stronghold is finished, and you've reached Rank 7, you can begin the third, and final, phase of construction. Return to Balmora and speak with Dondos and he will tell you that you need to get rid of the bandits in the area of your stronghold. To do that you'll need to hire a guard and suggests you speak with the Balmora Fighter's Guild or the Imperial Legion at Fort Moonmoth to do so. The Fort will have no one to spare, but speaking with Flaenia Amiulusus at the Fighter's Guild will get you a guard named Fjorgeir for 1000 gold. Once you hire him, travel to your stronghold to meet him and talk to him about the bandits. Apparently the bandits are hiding out in the cave of Zainsipilu which is South East of the Stronghold. Travel their (with or without the guard) and wipe out the bandits there. Return to Driler to begin the third phase of construction.

You should receive another journal entry in a few days when the last phase of construction is complete.

Redoran Disguise
5 August 2002

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask you to pretend to be a dead Redoran and receive some orders from the quest-giver Neminda in the Redoran hall in Ald'ruhn. She gives you a helm to wear to disguise your face which you must wear when you meet with Neminda. Once you meet Neminda, you are ti use the code phrase Orphan of Arnesia to identify yourself and collect the parcel.

Once you have the parcel, return to Nileno in Balmora. Note that if you are an Argonian or a Khajiit, you will not receive this quest as you will not be able to wear the full faced helmet.

Steal Alchemist Recipe
5 August 2002

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask you to steal a formula from an alchemist who has been stealing business from a loyal Hlaalu alchemist. Travel to Aurane Frernis in Vivec's Foreign Quarter, Lower Waistworks and steal a recipe scroll (there's one on the table, one in a chest at the foot of the bed, and one of Aurane herself).

Return to Nileno in Balmora with the recipe to complete the quest.

Sabotage an Egg Mine
5 August 2002

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask you to help undermine the rival Serjo Avon Oran by killing the Kwama Queen in the Inanius Egg Mine, in the mountains East of Suran. You can optionally use his to extort up to 1000 gold from Oran (in his manor in Suran).

Return to Nileno in Balmora once the queen is dead to receive your 500 gold reward.

Hlaalu Guar Hides
5 August 2002

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask you to convince Rolasa Oran in Vivec's Foreign Quarter, Upper Waistworks, to buy imported Guar Hides from House Hlaalu, instead of House Redoran. Initially Rolasa will refuse, but just raise her disposition to around 80 and she will agree.

Return to Nileno in Balmora to finish the quest.

Deliver Spy Orders
5 August 2002

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask to deliver orders to the House spy, Bivale Teneran, in the Ald'ruhn Manor District. Turn the orders into Bivale and she'll give you a free outfit.

Return to Nileno in Balmora to finish the quest.

Solve Hlaalo Murder
14 January 2003

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask to find the murderer of Ralen Hlaalo in town and kill him. You should be able to get this quest whether you belong to the House or not. If you ask around town, you'll be pointed to Nine-Toes the Argonian. Nine-Toes is in his house in town and will deny any involvement, and point you to the house Hlaalo servant. The Hlaalo manor is just across from the Hlaalu Manor, though all the doors are well locked. If you manage to get inside, you'll find the servant Uryne Nirith inside who will finger a young Dunmer with red hair, bonemold armour, and a Dwemer War Axe. With this information, you can ask around town again and you'll be pointed towards Thanelen Velas (of the Camonna Tong) in the Balmora Council Club. Kill either Velas or Nine-Toes, or both if you want to make sure.

Return to Nileno in Balmora to finish the quest.

Includes Contributions from March Runyon.

Hlaalu Ebony
5 August 2002

Nileno Dorvayn at the Balmora council manor will ask to either convince Canctunian Ponius at the East Empire Company in Ebonheart to buy ebony from House Hlaalo, or shut down the Redoran mine in Sudanit. The first maybe easier as all you must do is raise Ponius' disposition up to 75 to convince him. To shut down the mine, find and kill Darns Tedalen inside the mine which is SouthEast of the Buckmoth Legion Fort.

Return to Nileno in Balmora to complete the quest. If you perform both tasks, Nileno will reward you with a suit of Glass armour.

Flaeus Debt
5 August 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to collect some money owed by Murudius Flaeus of Hla Oad. Flaeus can be found at his house in Hla Oad will pay the money if you raise his disposition up to around 90 (or at least, give you a key to a chest hidden under Fadila's house near the docks). Alternatively, you can just pick the chest and take the money yourself. In fact, talking around town will subtely point you to the hidden chest.

Return to Arethi in Vivec with the money to complete the quest and recieve half of it back as a reward.

Treasury Courier
5 August 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to deliver sealed orders to Baren Alen at the Hlaalu Treasury in Vivec. If you open the orders (which are in code anyways), Alen will notice and you'll sacrifice the reward.

Return to Arethi in Vivec to complete the quest.

Escort Tarvyn Faren
5 August 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to escort the merchant Tarvyn Faren to the Halfway Tavern in Pelagiad. You'll find Faren just North of Vivec on the road. You'll have to travel slowly so that the merchant and his guar won't get too lost.

Return to Arethi in Vivec to complete the quest.

Aid Hlaalu at Oridniran
5 August 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to help any survivors who are fighting the evil telvanni mage at Odiriniran, East of Molag Mar. There are survivors, a good number of them, and they are doing relatively well for themselves, except that their leader's sister, Vedelea Othril, has been captured by the sorcerer. Vedelea can be found in a locked cell and will not follow you until the sorcerer, upstairs in the tower, has been killed. Escort Vedelea back to her brother, Remasa.

Return to Arethi in Vivec to complete the quest and receive a 500 gold reward for killing Faram, and another 500 gold if you successfully rescued Vedelea.

Exterminate Diseased Rats
21 September 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to kill some diseased rats which have been planted into Yngling Half-Trolls prized game rats in Yngling Manor, St. Olms Plaza in Vivec. The rats are in the basement of the manor and are all mingling closely together, so be careful not to accidently kill any regular game rats, but just the diseased ones (you can still complete the quest if you kill only one good rat though).

Return to Arethi in Vivec to complete the quest. If you kill more than one normal rat, your reward is greatly reduced (only 1 gold instead of 1000 gold).

Zainab Ebony
5 August 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to persuade the Zainab camp to perform its Ebony trade with solely House Hlaalu. The camp is a ways NorthWest from Tel Aruhn on the mainland. Once you reach the camp you are directed to the yurt of Gulakhan Ashibaal. You can convince him to sell only with House Hlaalu by choosing with options The Zainab are now strong enough to sell Ebony and If we both sell ebony the price drops.

Return to Arethi in Vivec to complete the quest and receive a share of the profits.

Prelude Shipwreck
24 September 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to recover a Daedric Wakizashi from the sunken shipwreck of the Prelude, East of Bal Fel. The blade can be found on its lower level. Don't forget to check the rest of the wreck for loot, which you can keep. You can only finish the quest by returning the exact blade she requests. A regular Daedric Wakizashi will not work.

Return to Arethi in Vivec with the blade to complete the quest.

Console Command for the Blade:
player->additem "daedric wakizashi_hhst", 1

Guard Blacksmith
5 August 2002

Edryno Arethi at the Vivec council manor will ask to guard Ralen Tilvur's smith shop in Vivec's Market Canton which has been broken into the past three nights. The shop is in the SouthEast corner of the Foreign Quarter Plaza. Talk to Ralen and the thief, Drarel Andus, should appear. Kill the thief.

Return to Arethi in Vivec to complete the quest.

House Sponsor
5 August 2002

Once you reach Rank 3 in the guild, you'll need a House sponsor in order to be promoted further. Talking with people in the guild, you will be directed to Curio in his manor on the Hlaalu Plaza in Vivec. If you haven't meet Curio before, he's a strange one to say the least. In order to be sponsered, all you need to do is take your clothes off...all of them. Once you've removed everything, just speak with him to be sponsered and be directed to Odral Helvi.

Velfred the Outlaw
5 August 2002

Once you've reached Rank 4 in the guild and completed some of the quests for Odral Helvi, you can start receiving quests from good ole' Crassius Curio in his Manor in Vivec (Hlaalu Plaza). Curio will ask you to get the outlaw Velfred to pay some smuggling fees to House Hlaalu. Curio does not say where you can find the outlaw, but suggests that you try asking around Hla Oad. The people there will tell you that Velfred and his ship are at a secret dock to the SouthWest of town. Once you find the outlaw, either convince him to pay the fee (raise his disposition to around 75) or simply kill him.

Return to Curio in Vivec to complete the quest and receive 500 gold if you killed the outlaw, or 1000 gold if you persuaded him.

Kill Reynel Uvirith
5 August 2002

Crassius Curio in his manor in Vivec will ask you to kill the Telvanni sorcerer Reynel Uvirith in the strongold at Tel Uvirith, in the Ashlands West of Tel Fyr.

Return to Crassius when Uvirith is dead to complete the quest.

Get Dram Bero's Support
5 August 2002

Crassius Curio in his manor in Vivec will ask you to get the support of another Hlaalu councilor, Dram Bero. Unfortunately, Dram is hard to find, though Curio suggests to start looking in Vivec. If you ask around, you'll eventually be directed to the St. Olms Plaza. A simple search of the level will reveal nothing, expect possibly a well locked door in the Haunted Manor. Inside you'll find Bero and you can get his support by talking with him, though you'll need to take out his champion Garding the Bold first (he doesn't want you to kill him, so either use hand-to-hand, a sleep spell, or wait until Garding concedes when he is low on health). Once you defeat Garding, you'll get Bero's support.

Return to Crassius complete the quest.

Kill Banden Indarys
5 August 2002

Crassius Curio in his manor in Vivec will ask you to kill Lord Banden Indarys at the Indarys Manor, between Ald'ruhn and Maar Gan.

Return to Crassius when Indarys is dead to complete the quest and receive 1000 gold and a promotion.

Hlaalu Vault Orders
5 August 2002

Odral Helvi in the Goverenor's Hall in Caldera will ask you to deliver an order to the Treasury Assistant Clerk, Tenisi Lladri in the Hlaalu Vaults in Vivec. Though all you have to do is a simply delivery, you can also take the orders to three other people: Alen, Rovone Arvel, and Crassius Curio. Though if you do hand in the orders to the alternates, you'll still complete the quest but Helvi will not like you.

Return to Helvi to complete the quest.

Stolen Mine Documents
14 September 2002

Odral Helvi in the Goverenor's Hall in Caldera will ask you to recover documents stolen from the Caldera mine and kill the thief. Asking around town will point you to the two newest people in town: Irgola and Elmussa Damori. Irgola denies any involvement but Damori is somewhat less convincing. If you raise Damori's disposition to around 80 she will admit to the theft and give you the documents. Although you are supposed to kill her, Damori will plead with you not to tell Helvi it was her and to spare her life. It's up to you, and you can let her live and lie successfully to Helvi if your disposition with him is higher than 70.

Return to Helvi to complete the quest. If you turn the theif in, and you are in the Thieves Guild, you will get no services from guild members you dont outrank (i.e., the stewards).

Text in Part from Frazer Rayburn.

Ascadian Land Deeds
5 August 2002

Odral Helvi in the Goverenor's Hall in Caldera will ask you to replace some 'erroneous' land deeds for the Ascadian Isles he has found in the Hlaalu Records in Vivec. The deed he gives you is obviously fake and if you talk to Curio about the matter and give him the fake deed instead. If you don't want to risk stealing the real deed from the Vault, you can talk to Baren Alen about some erroneous documents if you've already given the fake deed to someone.

Return to Helvi with the real land deed to complete the quest.

Ascadian Farmer Taxes
5 August 2002

Odral Helvi in the Goverenor's Hall in Caldera will ask you to collect some rent and taxes from Manat Varnan-Adda and Llovyn Andus, two farmers in the Ascadian Isles. They only owe 50 gold each and Helvi says that you are to kill them if they refuse to pay. If you chat with Curio about this, he believes that Helvi just wants the Farmers dead and suggests that you pay the whole 100 gold yourself. Neither farmer has the cash, although Llovyn will offer Corky the guar which will fetch you 200 gold if you manage to lead it all the way to Drulene Falen's herd. You could also kill the farmers if you lean that way. You can also talk to Rovone Arvel about the whole matter and he'll give you the 100 gold to cover the expenses.

Return to Helvi with the 100 gold (or say that the farmers are dead if they are) to complete the quest.

Smuggle Ebony
5 August 2002

Odral Helvi in the Goverenor's Hall in Caldera will ask you to take five pieces of Ebony to Drinar Varyon in Ald'ruhn. If you don't already know, Varyon is a smuggler abd smuggling raw Ebony is illegal. If you want, just deliver the ebony and return back to Helvi. Otherwise, take a side trip to see Curio who will tell you to take the ebony to Segunivus Mantedius at Fort Buckmoth instead. If you do, both Varyon and Helvi will be taken care of.

Return to Helvi (or Curio if you turned Helvi in) to complete the quest.

Books for Ald'ruhn
5 August 2002

You can start performing the few quests for Ilmeni Dren once you reach Rank 4 in the House. You can find Ilmeni in her apartment in Vivec, St. Delyn Canal South One. For the first quest, talk to her about people cannot read. Ilmeni complains that not enough people know how to read and says that often the teachers in the Mages Guild do not have enough books. You must find two books, ABCs for Barbarians and The Annotated Anuad for the school in the Ald'ruhn Mages Guild. The two books can be pretty found at any bookstore and simply deliver them to Vala Catraso in the Ald'ruhn Mages Guild.

Return to Ilmeni in Vivec to complete the quest.

Rescue J'Saddha
12 January 2003

For Ilmeni Dren's next quest, you will need to have freed a number of slaves (at least 20), inquired about the Twin Lamps, and received the key phrase, They light the way to freedom. Once you know this phrase you can talk to Ilmeni about the Twin Lamps and use the phrase to unlock her next two quests.

Ilmeni Dren in Vivec will ask you to help the anti-slave group, the Twin Lamps, in Ald Velothi. If you've freed many slaves, you may have already heard about them. Travel to Ald Velothi and meet with Galyn Arvel by the docks to learn that a Khajiit slave, J'Saddha, was supposed to meet with them by the boats for an escape. Unfortunately, the slave did not make it and is instead hiding the Daedric ruins to the East, with several slavehunters on his trail. You can kill the slavehunters to make the quest easier, though if you don't taunt them, it is considered murder. Otherwise, you'll have to try and sneak J'Saddha back into town. If you talk with the slavehunters, and raise their disposition to 60 or higher, you can convince them to leave town on a wild goose chase. Once you find J'Saddha, escort him back to Galyn Arvel.

Return to Ilmeni in Vivec to complete the quest.

Rescue Hides-His-Foot
5 August 2002

After her previous quest to rescue J'Saddha, Ilmeni Dren in Vivec will ask you to free an Argonian slave, Hides-His-Foot, from the Dren Planation North of Vivec and escort him to Sterdecan's Farm. You'll find the slave outside in the planation, though if the guards see you free him they will attack you (you may want to kill the guards first to keep the slave safe). Escort the slave to the Sterdecan's Farm to the NorthEast of the plantation and have the farmer take him. If you talk with Hides-His-Foot once you've rescued him, he'll tell you about a secret hidden in a locked room in Dren's cellar. The room is well guarded, but you'll have to take them out at one point or another in a variety of other quests.

Return to Ilmeni in Vivec to complete the quest. This is her last quest.

Control the Ordinators
15 November 2002

Once you reach Rank 8 in the House, Duke Vedam Dren in the Grand Council Chamber in Ebonheart will ask you to help control the Ordinators, and tells you to speak with Archcanon Tholer Saryoni on the matter. The Archcanon can be found in the High Fane in Vivec will acknoledge that the Ordinators have failed and gives you an chance to recover the Robes of St. Roris. The Robes are in a well hidden chest in the shrine of Assemanu, on an island SouthEast of Seyda Neen. There is a key on a dead Ordinator's body before you enter into the shrine area that lets you in. The chest is at the end of the shrine, when you encounter Dagoth Hlevul, on a ledge which can only be accessed with a levitate spell (or telekinesis). Return to Saryoni with the robe and give it to him in return for him agreeing to control the Ordinators.

Return to Duke Vedam in Ebonheart to complete the quest.

BUG NOTE: If you cannot leave the Assemanu shrine area, this is most likely due to a bug. I don't believe this is actually on purpose as I became stuck there and there is nothing in the game data that indicates that this was done on purpose. Simply use a recall spell/scroll to get out, or if you don't have any (tsk, tsk) and are playing the PC version, open the console (~ tilde key) and enter the command:

coe -4, -4
(or similar numbers) to teleport you outside. I've also been told you can find a key on the body of a Dreamer in the shrine area that will let you out.

Includes Contributions from RDJ.

Grandmaster
22 June 2003

In order to become grandmaster of the house, Duke Vedam Dren in the Grand Council Chamber in Ebonheart will tell you that you must win control of the Camonna Tong from his brother, Orvas Dren, in the Dren Plantation North of Vivec. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, included killing him (which might be most difficult). If you are persuasive enough, you can get Orvas to agree to give control of the syndicate to you. Alternatively, you can find an incriminating note in his basement and blackmail him into giving you control.

Return to Duke Vedam in Ebonheart to complete the quest and be named Grandmaster of House Hlaalu.

It may be possible to become Grandmaster after becoming House Father, skipping Council Member completely. Do all the Nerenas quests in Balmora, do all but the last of the quests for the corrupt guy in Caldera. (I killed Draras Voryn so i couldnt finish), and 2-3 of Edwinnas and one of llemis Drens and both of the Dukes. You should skip Council Member and go directly to Grandmaster.

Redoran and Hlaalu Grandmasters
25 September 2002

If you are a member of House Redoran, after killing Dren to become Horator in the main quest, I went to Duke Dren (Ebonheart) and asked about Cammona Tong. He promptly made me Grandmaster in Hlaalu. However, it does not show like that in the character screen, I'm only a Lawman but I'm in and it should probably be able to rise in rank...

During the main quest to become Hortator, I blackmailed Orvas Dren with the note in the basement. I continued on to beat the main quest. Later I went to the Duke for the Redoran stronghold land deed and asked about the Camonna Tong. He told me he was making me Hiaalu Grandmaster. Since I was not yet in the house, it only showed up with a rank of hireling, but when I asked him again he named me Grandmaster once more, and then it showed as Grandmaster. (I probably should have not asked the second time... I could have done the Hiaalu missions... anyway, this can be used as a trick to be in 2 Great Houses, Hiaalu and one of the others, so it's pretty cool.
