You gain ranks by posting in any thread except for Skyrim or General Discussion.

If you're interested, here's a list of the ranks, and the post requirement.

That's the highest anyone's reached, but I imagine the next rank is
4.5 Coins - Title: Master, condition: 8000 posts
and the rank after
5 Coins - Title: Grandmaster, condition: 16 000 posts

The last two are speculation.

Exactly. They're basically just for fun and do not mean anything; everyone around here is equal.

As an aside, because this also always comes up, we have two moderator titles: Global Moderator and Tea Party Moderator, also known as a TPM. Historically the TPMs were "moderators in training" who were extremely attractive assigned to the General Discussion subforums (the General Banter, The Arts, Multimedia, The Tech Desk, and Roleplays subforums) and who did not have full moderator abilities, but today we all have the same abilities and are also equal,* to make sure you can go to anyone on the team at anytime and get the same result, although we TPMs tend to hang around the General Discussion area more.

* - Except that we pink moderators are prettier and more handsome. Shhhhhh.

So Kestral used to have more than 4000 posts . Was that lowered because they stopped counting General Posts, or is there some others reason?

Yup! Everyone who posts in a General Discussion subforum (and, as of late, the Skyrim subforum) has more posts than their official post count for this reason. Because this is an Elder Scrolls forum, we try to encourage posts that are productive and actually about TES, so we have posts in those threads count. The General Discussion part is a little something extra where you can go and just relax and talk about a whole score of other things, too. But we are brought here under one mutual love, and that's our love for TES, so why not give that a little more consideration?

What you normally see is your counted posts = going for your rank too. You can check your total post by going to your profile, and click "Search user's posts", and then you get pages with all your posts, and the total count is top left, "Search found...".

Like Avron, she's got 3075 posts total, as I'm writing this, but her "official" post count is 355. I have 2640 total, 1125 counted.

EDIT: I've got 1126, this one counted. :D

But the badges/coins are only counted posts, so how did Kestral have 4? Did they used to count all posts for rank?

Yup. That was a long time ago though, well before I was here. From what I read about it, the reason the original mods changed it was because some people wanted a high post count and where flood posting topics like the 'What are you listening to?' thread.

It was actually a pretty effective method. Stops the whole 'My post count makes me God! bow down peasants!' talk. You actually have to earn the post count now with contributions to the reason we all came here.. the games. Spamming the TES sub-forums is not a good idea either, it's easier to pick out the pointless posters in there.

I thought posts in TES General didn't count either?

I actually forget that sub-forum is even there, still haven't got use to it. I was more explaining why there was a change in the whole post count system back in the day, then going into specifics about each sub-forum. I actually have no idea if TES General posts count or not.

Either way, I don't see much spamming on here compared to a lot of forums I've visited. Sure you get a few cases of it, but nothing dire.

TES General doesn't count towards the displayed post count, although I'm sort of 50/50 on whether it should, because there isn't really a lot of spammy discussion there, and there are some good topics there, and still game-related too.

Still, I have no problem with the way it is at the minute, I think the system as a whole works well enough. For example, I have 6235 posts in total, some of which I have put a lot of time in to writing and researching, others which have been more causal and friendly. The split in the way posts are counted reflects this, the reason most of us are here is for the games, but we are also a really tight-knit community. Post counts and ranks really aren't all that important.

I did a poll about it, viewtopic.php?f=28&t=20174.

The main thing, besides the fact that we want to emphasize TES Games related posts, being a TES Games Forum, is the issue of people wanting to add to their post count = get higher rank by posting "anything". Like I once entered a site where a Moderator rebuked members for posting "Ah", "Oh", Eh", or a simple smiley... just in order to increase their posts.

Personally, I strongly believe in people saying something. For Heaven's sake: we are human beings, we have brains, we have the capability to express ourselves, we can distinguish between what is totally worthless and what has some value. Why not give something that gives something to others? I mean... post count... the aim of one's life, eh? "Get serious".
