For some reason the site 1: would not load. 2: when it finally had loaded it had mercilessly logged me out. (I'm almost logged in) What caused this?

Your being logged out might simply have been due to you being timed out. The site not loading may just have been due to an issue with the servers. What in particular was unusual about what happened?

Yeah, that seems par for the course when you have connectivity issues. Could have been on your end or ours. Unless it happens frequently I wouldn't worry about it.
