I was gonna make this thread, but then MM had already made it.

Well, I played at the age of 8 back in '99, but I sold my cards a few years later... only to regret in 2013 when my love for the game returned. I have started collecting again and have been playing it since. So far I haven't attended any events, but that'll come. I also discovered that a lot of my friends play, the lot of them I had no clue played it, but they do.

I have plenty of different decks created virtually, but the only one I have so far is this one:
R/G Giant/Warrior tribal deck, well it has some dragons, beasts and spiders too, to multiply the opportunities
Hidden:
9 Forest
9 Mountain
4 Gruul Guildgate
2 Gruul Turf

1 Balefire Dragon
1 Utvara Hellkite
2 Kessig Recluse
2 Disciple of the Old Ways
1 Hamletback Goliath
2 Sunrise Sovereign
1 Borderland Behemoth
2 Boldwyr Heavyweights
2 Marshdrinker Giant
2 Obstinate Baloth
2 Civic Wayfinder
2 Bramblewood Paragon
2 Satyr Hedonist

2 Crush Underfoot
2 Terrifying Presence
2 Pit Fight
2 Giant's Ire
2 Explore

2 Obsidian Battle-Axe

Alarra, why don't you have any gates or dual lands in your decks? :S and also you have a lot of different creatures and cards in your deck. Take a look at mine or Musicman's, many of the cards are the same and even though you love all of your Magic cards, you have to favor some over others in order to make a great deck. E.g mine can get a 8/8 giant with trample out in turn 3 (although that cards lets your opponents put any creature they want onto the battlefield, but I will make that harder for them in time) and if I wait a turn I can have a 10/9 giant with haste and trample in turn 4... You've gotta be quick or be dead.

You have a lot of planeswalkers, MM. I only have one, Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. But I don't think I am gonna use him anytime soon. My next decks will be a B/U mill deck, mono B discard deck, R/W soldier deck, G/B counter deck and a G/W lifegain deck.

Because I don't own any? (Well, gates. I have two dual lands now which you'll see me list in my new white/green deck, but that's it.)
I did buy a couple cards the other day - a second Deadly Recluse, a green instant spell that destroys target enchantment/artifact, and a hydra that's one of those whose health is determined by how many cards you tap. I'm still new to the game and can't justify spending any more until I'm more used to my playstyle and cards and what works well and what doesn't. I got a bunch of cards my friend had doubles of the other day, though, so I at least have a *little* better of a deck.

Here's the white/green deck I've been playing the last few days:
Hidden:
Land:
Forest x11
Plains x11
Temple Garden
Transguild Promenade

Creatures:
Brindle Boar
Serra Angel
Centaur Healer
Deadly Recluse x2
Angelic Wall
Adaptive Snapjaw
Vastwood Hydra
Axebane Stag
Elvish Mystic x2
Rumbling Baloth
Garruk's Companion
Assault Griffin
War Priest of Thune
Quilled Slagwurm
Battering Krasis
Arbor Elf
Shattered Angel

Spells:
Titanic Growth
Divine Favor x2
Arrest x2
Slice in Twain
Lifelink
Avenging Arrow
War Report
Aerial Predation
Lyev Decree
Pay No Heed
Naturalize
Trollhide
Howl of the Night Pack
Giant Growth

Artifacts:
Staff of the Wild Magus

You seem to have a lot of expensive cards in your deck, Alarra (expensive as is mana cost). You might see if you have any lower-cost smaller creatures in your library. Otherwise it will likely be several turns before you can play anything.

@Hippie: all of my planeswalkers have abilities that help my creatures and my strategy. I love them :D

Yeah, I know what they do Musicmagician, but I also know that if you don't get them from boosters they cost...

Yep, I buy cards. I also pulled a Thoughtsieze and a Xenagos when Theros launched and traded them in for cards I would actually use (like a Garruk).

I buy cards too, but there is a limit on how much I wanna spend on a single card, unless I really need it and know it will bring in its cost.
If I had no restrictions in my budget I'd just buy 4 Exploration.

EDIT: CHRISTMAS UPDATE - I AM SAD TO SEE THIS THREAD DIED, BUT A NEW ONE SHALL SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY EVENTUALLY.

^ We don't have to make a new one if we're going to bring back discussion on the old one! ;)

Today my friends and I had another Magic: the Gathering party and I played quite a bit. We were talking about going to a pre-release event for Born of the Gods, so two of us went and got the sealed cards, but learned that the first round alone would take several hours and the whole thing wouldn't finish till midnight, so we just dropped out before the tournament started and headed back to the apartment. I'd been hoping for a green sealed deck, but green and red were gone, so I chose white. Ended up getting a lot of nice green cards in the booster packs, the best of which was Polukranos, World Eater. Between buying a couple cards, getting some from friends, and these ones from the boosters, I've been improving my deck a bit, and green is definitely my primary color.

I built a mono-green deck today which has been serving me better than any dual-color ones I've tried so far:
Hidden:
Land:
Forest x21

Creatures:
Arbor Elf
Elvish Mystic x2
Sylvan Caryatid
Vastwood Hydra x2
Polukranos, World Eater
Snake of the Golden Grove
Ulvenwald Bear
Advocate of the Beast
Deadly Recluse x4
Adaptive Snapjaw
Runeclaw Bear
Tangle Mantis
Sacred Wolf
Garruk's Companion
Rumbling Baloth
Battering Krasis

Spells:
Lifegift
Verdant Haven
Giant Growth
Titanic Growth
Trollhide
Unnatural Predation
Hunger of the Howlpack
Windstorm
Shredding Winds
Aerial Predation
Glissa's Scorn
Slice in Twain
Naturalize

Artifacts:
Basilisk Collar
Gorgon's Head
Staff of the Wild Magus

That's nice for a sealed/limited deck, Alarra, but as I have said before if you wanna play Magic and get challenged Casual is the only format that really does the trick, unless you are a pro player with super many of the expensive cards from the latest block. If I were you I'd get rid off some of the spells and put in more creatures. The key to a great deck is not a lot of different cards, but cards with nice synergy.
I bought a booster pack yesterday, my card total is now 1300.

Also, did you guys see that 20th century fox has adopted MTG for a movie? It's probably gonna be awful, but let's see.

Jace will be the main character, I'm sure. He seems to be the most popular Planeswalker. Heck, he's even on the new MTG 2 dollar coin!

I like Jace's abilities and stuff, but I hate that he is almost always portrayed as a whiny emokid. Kiora, Domri Rade and Vraska, now these guys are the most awesome planeswalkers.

I know. I like the way Jace is portrayed in that it is like the Architect of Thought. Vraska'snew appearance is also dope.

That's my regular deck, not the sealed one - it just contains some of the cards I got from the sealed deck. But yeah, I just play for fun with friends, I don't go to the comic shop to play and probably would only do those sealed ones, like the one I did go to, where everyone's on fairly even footing.
Thanks for the tips, as far as changes to make. I think one of the things I'm going to do, besides adding more creatures, is maybe replace some of those spells with 2-3 more Naturalize; it's really useful for destroying enchantments which is what I was most struggling with in some of my recent games.

On the topic of Jace, I got to try him out when borrowing a friend's Commander deck the other day. He is fun to play with.

Jace, Architect of Thought is the one he had. Never did get to use the big ability though - when I got close people started swinging at me and I had to let him die. xP

Yeah, that's the popular one right now. Most people use the -2 ability to get card advantage.

I also play for fun, Alarra, but I don't intend to lose. The next decks I am building are gonna be killer.

Man...It's been three years since I last played.

I was building an infection, white/blue flying, and a transformation deck when I was still playing. The last two aren't always the best, but I was playing for fun with my step-brother.

Let's see. I know I had Iona, Shield of Emeria, as my terror card. I was thinking of adding in Karn Liberated, but I wasn't sure if that would have been too many high cost centerpieces ( 9 cost is a steep price).

My transformation deck was the earliest along, and my brother moved away as I was building it. The premise was interesting though, and I wonder how well it would have played.

My infection deck was a starter deck, with slight alterations to it, that I no longer remember. It had it's moments of hilarity.

My best friend got me into Magic, I started hoarding cards, and then we never played it together. Hmph. But I did have one duel with a friend--placed a bet on it, too--and won. Black/blue deck, with lots of cards from Dark Ascension. Heavily populated with zombies, and very zombie themed, with many cards that give buffs to zombies/non-humans (like Diregraf Captain or Mikaeus the Unhallowed), some revive cards, but also with lots of cards that force my opponent to discard--good for thinning out their arsenal and depriving them of good cards, which did indeed happen in my one and only duel.

I'd consider venturing to the tabletop game/bookstore for friday night magic, but that would mean both interacting with strangers, and busing across town (and back). Ech.

Actually, nope! :D Baloth-Kul is the author of The Horror of Castle Xyr and Legend of Krately House. I got into Magic afterwards, though, and did find the connection a little interesting, yes. Heh. Baloths are cool creatures.
