It's not a plot hole. Chewbacca was nabbed from Kashyyyk by Imperials to be a labor slave. Then-Imperial-Cadet Han Solo saved his life, and so Chewbacca swore a life-debt to him as they went into the smuggling business together. Chewie proply woulda stayed on Kashyyyk for many years if he hadn't been captured.

I had a feeling there would be some EU explanation for it. I mean, they came up with one for the "12 parsecs" line, for crying out loud. Anyway, I was joking (but that can still be my personal headcanon!).

They kinda need to explain it for newcomers and well, it's not really explained in the films. I do think Chewy will die in Episode 8 whilst doing so as a heroic sacrifice.

False, TSD, there are Marvel-produced comics that are also included as canon.

The deal is, while the specifics of the life debt aren't known, it's still canon. It has to be or Chewie wouldn't be with Han for so long. So it's safe to assume that Han saved Chewie at some point, and it will likely be elaborated upon in the 2018 Han Solo movie.

Are they going to get a young actor to play Han in his younger days? I know Harrison Ford's doing good for his age, but I don't think good make-up is going to be enough to convince people that a man in his seventies is 50 years younger.

(I know that sounds silly, but there's so many fans of Ford in the role of Solo, that I wouldn't put it past them.)
