Hear hear, I stayed far, far from it.

$60 price tag was ridiculous... at least compared to the fact that I could just play modded SimCity 4. Heck, one of my friends who got the new SimCity and sort of enjoyed it admitted that modded SimCity 4 was still a better experience.

1) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
2) Morrowind
3) Demon's Souls
4) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
5) Skyrim

Comments on Each:
1) I can still hear the radio playing in my head.
Hidden:
You can say I've always been a gamer. My father owned consoles since before my first memories, and my first games where of the atari variety. So of course I played the Marios, Zeldas, Golden Eye, Halos and all the GTA's and so forth but not until Vice City did I ever completely submerse myself in a virtual world. Able to plot out my actions from the start of a play-thru with which hidden packages to get before doing a certain mission, when to take time to do a side mission while on a certain part of town; Knowing the loading pattern of NPC's, cops, and the height of curbs, making for seamless execution and never ending vigilante missions. There's only one other game I ever mastered to such a level and that game is...

2) ...Morrowind.
Hidden:
Oh, what can I say. To start, I had a day off of work and was bored and wanting an RPG. Not any RPG I ever played before but instead something that I can help shape. I wanted to build my own character's features and take on something that was as open-ended as possible. Now, I don't need to tell you, I got that and then some. Me stumbling across Morrowind on the very morning I was craving it struck me like something I can only describe as divine intervention, and I devoted myself to it as such. If any game came close to ruining my life, it would be this one. Work, family, food, no thank you, give me Morrowind. It was rough, my friends. I still remember the shock of my brother's face when he came to visit and was watching me make sense of that damned journal. Priceless.

3) Ugh, it's a love/hate relationship.
Hidden:
When you're forced to work so hard that even something like walking up the stairs is a big accomplishment, you're going to feel great about being able to get thru the whole game. The whole experience is tense, dark, and frustrating, but I wouldn't have it any other way. If any of you have ever played it and quit before fighting Maiden Astraea, I'll have you know you've deprived yourself of the most "WTF!" moment in gaming history. Shame on you.

4) My love of music was used to ensnare me!
Hidden:
Good times... good times.

5) I'm hoping the ES:O knocks this one off the list. We'll see.

Skyrim would have made this list and perhaps #1 but it lacks some things that made oblivion great, I will only state one, spell crafting, I made spells in oblivion that were epic, not over powered jes epic.. Force push spells, spells that light up a dark room, elemental spells with 100 foot radius, I miss stuff like that..

Here are a top five unranked to me, I guess. :) Skyrim just missed it.

KOTOR
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Kingdom Hearts
Mass Effect

New list.

1: Minecraft
2: Roller Coaster Tycoon 2
3: Oblivion
4: Fallout 3
5: Battlefield 1942

When I was a kid, I used to play a game called Red Ace Squadron. It was an arcade type flight simulator. I used to play it daily. I loved that game, but I don't list it here. Why? Because it is tied with 1942. I figure more people know of 1942, but I feel I should tell people about Red Ace Squadron, the forgotten game of the forgotten company: Small Rockets.

Ok here are my top 10 favorite games of all time in no particular order since most of them are so dissimilar:

-- Oblivion
It was my first elder scrolls game and I still think it is the best one

-- Morrowind
My second favorite elder scrolls game. Very close to Oblivion but the combat was frustrating.

--Dota 2
I admit, I completely suck at it but I still love it. There is a lot of knowledge required to play the game, but when you do well it is extremely satisfying. It stands out in my mind as perhaps the best multiplayer game there is.

--Half-life 1&2 & mods
These games are all I played before Oblivion. They are great shooters and there are many great mods for them.

--Star Control II
I came across this very old game when I was looking through a forum for retro-gamers. Its definitely a classic rpg and is totally different from any other game I have played. Sort of a cross between TES and Elite. Oh, and its free. MOAR FRUNGY.

-- Call of Duty 1 & 2
These games often get a bad rep because all of the way-too-numerous later installments were just complete copies. The originals were pretty good, however.

--Team Fortress 2
Hats, need I say more?

--Quake 1 & 2
Some of my very first games. I played too much though so now they aren't much fun. QUAD DAMAGE!!!

--Unreal Tournament 2004
A great multiplayer game with great bots and the best weapon of all time, the flak cannon. MMMMMMONSTER KILL!!!!

--Fallout 3 & NV
Great games, very similar to TES.

Even newer list.

1: The Sims 3
2: Minecraft
3: Roller Coaster Tycoon 2
4: SimCity 4
5: Arma 2/Iron Front: Liberation 1944

So I got the Sims 3 the other day, and it is now my newest favorite game. I expect that it will stay like that for a while (if not forever).

I was thinking about this the other day after chatting with a friend. We were discussing what 10 games we would want to have with us if we were locked in a room with no internet for a lengthy amount of time. Ignoring any DRM always online requirements and assuming our games would already contain our favorite mods and DLC this is the list I came up with.

1. Skyrim
2. Mass Effect 3
3. Deus Ex 1
4. Starcraft
5. Morrowind
6. Dragon Age Origins
7. Half Life 2
8. Mass Effect 2
9. Crysis
10. Age of Empires II

Pretty fair mix of RPG, FPS, and strategy. Given a Kindle full of books of my choice and sufficient food/drink I could probably do a year or so in solitary confinement and come out sane. Any longer and my list would have to change from single games to game series. Such as...

1. The Elder Scrolls
2. Mass Effect
3. Half Life
4. Dues Ex
5. Starcraft
6. Dragon Age
7. Age of Empires
8. Command and Conquer
9. Diablo
10. FEAR

Not sure of the exact number but that comes out to over 50 games.

Sorry for going past the five game limit the OP set for this topic. But my lists were made with the premise of being locked in a room for a period of time.

Did I read about a conclusive list being drawn from this thread after a certain point?

In the meantime, 'ere be moi top foive:

1) Dungeon Keeper - timeless and innovative RTS with a devilishly dark sense of humour. Still just as addictive as the day I bought it.

2) TES III: Morrowind - not my earliest Elder Scrolls experience but the most enjoyable and immersive so far.

3) Fatal Racing (a.k.a. Whiplash) - another Windows 95 classic. Most fun I've ever had on four wheels.

4) Fallout 3 - Bethesda RPG set in futuristic post-nuclear apocalypse... what's not to like?

5) Planetside 2 - my first positive experience with a MMOFPS (does that genre exist? It does now). Sure it's buggy, and is constantly receiving maintenance patches and server updates, but when it works, by gum it works!

As of 2014 I have revised my opinion. :D

1 - Persona 4 Golden (My favorite game ever from what is undoubtedly one of the best series I’ve ever played. From beautiful music, amazing characters, fantastic gameplay, and HUNDREDS of hours of fanservice (the best kind of service) all on a PORTABLE platform, I can definitely say Persona 4 Golden is my favorite game of all time.)
2 - Dragon Age: Origins (As a sucker for low fantasy and stories of epic war, Dragon Age: Origins really hit home for me. Even with a custom character I felt like I was really part of the world of Thedas, like I was really a total bro with Alistair or really having an argument with Morrigan. The fact that there are multiple origins add replay value, and I’ve replayed this game at least 10 times.)
3 - Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (The greatest D&D game on the face of the planet. Having played Baldur’s Gate since I was young, Baldur’s Gate 2 took EVERYTHING and made it better. Better characters, gameplay, immersion in one of the greatest video game stories ever, and a plethora of mods made by a community that is still active even after 14 years; now THAT’S a good game. Don’t even get me started on Minsc.)
4 - Wild ARMs 3 (What might be one of my favorite groups of characters in any video game, Wild ARMs 3 has a cast of characters that go through character development that would put the best written novelists to shame. Gameplay is fantastic and the music is lovely, and the nostalgia I get from it only helps.)
5 - Fire Emblem: Awakening (Customization, shipping simulator WHERE YOUR OTP CAN ACTUALLY HAVE KIDS, fantastic gameplay and music, replayability out the wa-zoo, and super-fun tactical gameplay. How could I not love it?)

This is a tough one... overall they are...

1. TES games, I love them all equally and consider them parts of a whole.
2. Shenmue
3. GTA Vice City
4. Shin Megami Tensei 4
5. Ragnarok Online
6. Dynasty Warriors 3
7. Fable 2
8. Skies of Arcadia
9. Metal Saga/Metal Max
10. Grandia 2

I'd almost put Persona 3 on here as well as Kotor but despite how much I enjoy them I enjoyed the others more, same goes for Twisted Metal 2, Jade Empire, Mega Turrican, Baldurs Gate 2, Phantasy Star 4, Breath of Fire 3, Smackdown HCTP, DBZ Budokai 3, Bully, etc.

I almost put Skies of Arcadia above Fable 2 but then I recalled the amount of time I've spent on Fable 2 which is pretty ridiculous considering the fairly short length of the game, probably due to the customization.

And the reason I placed Shenmue so high was that even to this day it's attention to detail is unmatched even compared to Skyrim in some cases despite how it came out so long ago. I still play it yearly and it's hard to ignore it's greatness, the game is slow-moving but if you can overlook that it's a gem of a game. The fact that there hasn't been a third game almost makes me angry because it really is in it's own league.

Of course TES tops the list though because I wouldn't be here if it didn't, I love the games with or without mods for hundreds of reasons. I do think they have been a bit too streamlined in the recent entries but regardless, they are all fun.

EDIT: I switched Diablo 2 to Ragnarok Online because I have played it rather consistently for 10 years now and both were played almost exclusively online.

1. Skyrim
2. Oblivion
3. Forza 3
4. Far Cry (original, for PC)
5. Fallout 3

1 and 2 is a toss-up, but I've put more hours into Skyrim, so it goes first. It's ironic that I was not crazy about Skyrim at first and was very critical of some of the changes it brought. Now, it's #1 on the "favorite games ever" list. Huh.

3 is probably second to Skyrim in number of hours played.

Disclaimer: I haven't played every game ever made.

Edit: Changed the order of #'s 3 and 5, as well as the comments after putting a bit more thought into it.

BACK AT IT AGAIN AT KRISPY KREME:
These are all games that I believe to be "the best" as in they will stay relevant to me and my appreciation of video games for a very long time. There are many many games that are good great and awesome, but not that many that leave a lasting impression. I couldn't ever do a singular list listing my "favourite" games so I'll just be posting here periodically talking about games that I love.

  • Kingdom Hearts. I don't think any game has had a bigger impact on how I view and perceive games. I looked at screenshots in a magazine as a kid and thought "I want this game, this game is great and I know it", and it was. It wasn't until ~2 years later that I finally got a PS2 but oh boy did I play Kingdom Hearts. I've never been more excited for a game than the day I finally sat down in the living room and popped Kingdom Hearts 2 in.
  • Dragon Age: Origins. I don't think I've ever spent as much time on any game as I have on this.
  • Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. If you've played this game and don't love it you're a bad person.
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Ain't no TES game can beat what I felt playing this.
  • The Binding of Isaac. I don't know if there's a better roguelike out there, but for me this is it. I don't doubt that I'll keep playing this game forever.
  • Shadow of the Colossus. Again, a game that tremendously influenced my perception of the medium.
  • Final Fantasy VII. How this game manages to look and sound so silly while perfectly conveying every aspect of its story in all the seriousness that it is is beyond me. Tetsuya Nomura and everyone else who made this, you deft [&@%!], you.
  • MediEvil 1 + 2. Two of the best action hack 'n' slashers ever made.
  • Silent Hill 2. I mean, just watch this. Few games have ever been so concisely thematic and well-presented. DON'T BUY THE HD REMAKE IT'S TERRIBLE
  • Cowboy Bebop is a great videogame.

I liked MediEvil a lot back in the PS1 days! Dragon Age Origins also nearly made my list but not quite. I'm not surprised about all the people that liked Mass Effect but it wasn't for me, too linear. Jade Empires similar but has more soul to it and Baldurs Gate trumps both in my eyes.

The Rune Factory series is also something amazing, the games are very complete.
