Back from an exceptionally long hiatus.

Wild speculation incoming.

I believe Sotha Sil, through all his knowledge and capacity for replacing the original architect of Mundus, sold out the Aedra's realm of Aetherius to the Daedra and the Daedra slew the mortal forms of every last one of the Divines. The Divines live on only in their earthbones and the worship of their identities and spheres of influence and remain somewhat "alive" as celestial beings do in TES by way of spiritual remains. I.E. Talos can be unmade by stamping out his worship and cults.

Thusly, Sotha Sil also managed to secure safety of Nirn from the Daedra until his demise at the hands of Almalexia. After that, the Daedra had no one to uphold their end of he bargain for. So begins the events of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Don't really have much for sources, but ESO's bard song on the subject has explicit line "forsake the ones that made us, to fight our wrongful fate" did inspire this speculation some.
