There is a lot of information out there on how much damage is reduced by blocking, but I couldn't find anything on how the game decides whether or not the attack is blocked in the first place.

Is it just based off angles?
Or are larger shields easier to block with?
I tried editing shield size, and that didn't seem to do anything, but there are a lot of parameters and bits of data, so maybe I got the wrong ones.

if your post is not spam copy/paste then heres answer : you block by presing block button (whatever system you play) while having block compatible situation in hands - two handed weapon or shield/torch/empty in left hand. whatever blocking *reduces* damage or not depends on if attack hits the thing you are blocking with. how much blocking reduces damage (if attack is blocked that is) depends on perks and thing you are blocking with. just look in main site if you want specifics

no no, I mean
when you, while blocking, get hit by an attack, how does the game decide if the hit is blocked?
like if you get hit in the back, the attack is not blocked even if you are blocking. Also arrows don't always get blocked even if it's from the front

I believe that in general, as long as you either have the block button already pressed, or press it at the perfect time, any melee attacks from the front are blocked. AFAIK you cannot block attacks from behind, or the sides.

With arrows, I *think* they have to actually hit your shield directly to be blocked. Though I seem to remember there being a relevant perk in the block tree also, it's been a while since I've checked...

That is not correct.
I have found that it is controlled by the game setting fCombatHitConeAngle, which defaults to 35 degrees.
still not sure about arrows, however. The physical size of the shield certainly doesn't have any impact, so I am guessing it just rolls a random number if you don't have the deflect arrows perk.

This is interesting. I don't think I've seen anyone really explore the hit detection boxes before, let alone describe a cone.
