From today's announcement about Update 17 (coming in February):

This update will allow you to acquire unique collectibles that you can use to store items in your homes, freeing up valuable inventory and bank space. You'll be able to acquire these new items in game or from the Crown Store.

I'm looking forward to that! I'm a bit disappointed it's only a collectible, though, because that means you can only use the items once per house (and it's considered as one container across all houses), and the amount of items you can add is maxed, rather than being able to fill a house with storage.
