Quick Walkthrough

  1. Make your way to the large machine in the West. Climb up and along the pipes to the far East and up to the second level.
  2. Turn the two wheels at the top to connect the steam pipes to the ruins pipe section.
  3. Climb down and return to the machine to turn it on using the wheel in the front.
  4. Return the to Dwarven Ruins map.
  5. For what to do next, continue on with the Return to the Dwarven Ruins walkthough.

Detailed Walkthrough

Exiting the Ruins
When you exit from the Dwarven ruins you'll find yourself on top of those tall bridges you may have seen earlier. Make your way across them but note that those small balls will turn into robots when you approach them. If you wish to avoid them you can walk along the far edge away from them. If you are walking on the side with the pipes, when the robot opens up, you can walk over the pipe and get on the other side. The robot's arms are kinda helpless when it's flat against the pipe, and Cyrus can reach over the pipe and dispatch the robot with no problems.

The Pipes
On the other side of the bridges you'll find a bunch of interconnecting pipes, some lava, a big machine with two suction-like cups attached to it, and several turn wheels. Your purpose here is to turn the machine back on to restore power to the ruins you just exited.

Reconnecting the Pipes
You may notice that just after you cross the bridge, there are two gaps in the pipe sections along the ceiling. You have to reconnect these before any steam can reach the ruins. To do this you have to get onto the second level. There are several ways but the easiest (in my opinion) is achieved by using the pipes to the East (see images to the right). On the bridge with the yellow pipes, climb onto the platform to the North. From here, jump to grab hold of the pipe above you and hoist yourself up. You now must take a careful step backwards to give yourself enough room to make a running jump. I found facing South-West and moving one small step backwards worked the best. Be careful since its a small area, and a long ways down. From here its possible to make a running jump onto the top of the area. The large block in front of you makes it difficult, but try aiming just to one side of it and you should be ok. For other possible solutions to this, see the end of the page. Turning the Machine On
To turn the machine on, simply turn the wheel on its face. The suction cup devices will drop into the lava and everything will start spinning. This is a good thing. Your work here is done and you can return to the Dwarven Ruins. [Starting the Steam Machine, 160x120 (7kb)]

Another Solution
Another possible solution to connecting the pipes is this. Make your way on top of the pipe sections and then climb up top. Jump over to the main machine in the West and climb on top to reach the pipes. I took the left hand (or North) pipe route but it may be possible with the South route as well. The problem is these vertical sections that are in the way. Using walk mode and a few carefully placed jumps you can get around these easily enough. Once you reach the second level turn the wheels at the North and South ends to reconnect the pipes. I doubt this is the intended method to reach the top.

The Real Solution
The shrewd of you may notice that you didn't use any of the main wheels in the solution. This is most likely because the solutions I presented isn't the one you're expected to take, which is as follows. Start the machine up right away. You'll now need to turn the various wheels around the perimeter such that several of the disks go completely flat. They need to be flat so you can climb up and over them. There is at least one configuration which will allow you to reach the second level at the end of the pipes. It's the first wheel on the left and the third wheel on the right (all the way in back) as you're coming up (north) across the bridges. Reconnect the pipes as above and then return the pipe sections to their original configuration (look at some of the wall images around the area if you forget). This method may require less difficult jumps but certainly takes longer and is more difficult to setup. And, for the "simplest" solution, you can then go up to the top and turn only the right-hand wheel, and then come back down and turn only that one wheel by the stairs that you turned the first time. (All the steam then goes through one side of the pipes to get back to the mines, but it works.)
