Morrowind, home of the Dark Elf, was originally part of the First Empire of the Nords although its true origins are a mystery. A traveler passing into the province might believe that they have left Tamriel and entered a new world entirely. The sky is regularily darkened by ash storms from the Vvardenfell volcano and the familiar flora and fauna of Tamriel is exchanged for whatever bizarre forms can survive the ashfall. Cloaked and masked Dark Elves tend herds of giant insects, couriers riding 20 foot tall crab like creatures, and Argonian, Khajiit, and human slaves can be found throughout the province. The name Morrowind is a modern name for the province after the first eruption of the volcano Vvardenfell in 1E 668. The Nords knew it as Dunmereth after its inhabitants and Resdayn by the Dunmer themselves.

The first history of the Dark Elves hears of them divided into a number of clans constantly at war with each other. The Nord Sagas mention that these Dunmer clans would pledge themselves to any Nord chieftan who went to war with the clan's enemies which most likely aided in the Nordic conquest of Morrowind. The Dark Elves appear in the written record in 1E 416 during the War of Succession which destroyed the First Empire of the Nords. We first hear of the Tribunal over 200 years later which most likely rose to power from the ruin from the first eruption of Vvardenfell in 1E 668 destroying half of the province of Morrowind. This, in turn, led to a permanent shift south in the population towards Deshaan, the wide southern plain which slopes down into the swamps of Black Marsh. Through the Tribunal the Dunmer were finally united into one nation although clan rivalry still remains bitter.

There are currently five clans known as the Great Houses, Indoril, Redoran, Telvani, Dres, and Hlaalu, who control the entire politics and trade of Morrowind (in the past there may have been as many as six). Each clan is permanently allied with a number of subclans, although there have been several subclans to switch allegiances in the past. In earlier times the clans would feud using open warfare though this was forbidden under the rule of the Tribunal. The clans of present day are still at constant warfare with one another although they use the sanctioned guild of assassins, the Morag Tong. Clans regularily hire the Morag Tong to eliminate enemies, as long as they conform with the obscure but strict rules of their guild.

Clan Indoril is the primary clan amoung the five, most likely because it claims kinship with each of the three Tribunals. The capital of Indoril is Almalexia, also the capital of Morrowind and the government, or Tribunal priesthood, is composed of Indoril and their subclans. Redoran guards the western portains of Morrowind and are widely known as the best warriors in the province. Telvani is the xenophobic clan of a generally xenophobic race, shunning all contact with non-Dunmeri. They tend their herds of giant insects in solitude amoung the rocky hills and islands in the northeast of the province. The Telvani bugmusk is a highly prized perfume as are their riding-insects. Dres rules the southern portions of Morrowind in the fertile Deshaan plains and parts of swamp close to Black Marsh. The Dres are the slave-traders of Morrowind, keeping thousands of captives, mostly Argonians, in their infamous slave-pens of Tear, the Dres capital, and the surrounding plantations. Hlaalu is the smallest and weakest clan and clings to its ancient Great House status in its capital of Narsis. They are the traditional enemies to the Indoril who have controlled the government for the past 3000 years and their resilience deserves a certain respect. The merchants and traders of the province, the Hlaalu maintain a limited commerce with the rest of the Empire.
