Dear Reader,

Greetings from the most honored Mordallis Lanfellow, world taveller and Imperial historian and geographer (amoung other things). I first thank you for making use of my Tamriel map and geographical dictionary which I have so laboured on these many years, but a few words of note should be first issued for the concerned reader.

As you peruse my many maps of the land, you may notice significant discrepancies between them and other such documents. There are actually a good number of reasons for this which I shall go into furthur detail. During my significant research, from the southern shores of the Summerset Isles, to the most eastern point of Morrowind, I have discovered an almost universal fact that the author of the map will invariably favour his particular region. Usually this includes distorting the scale so that their province or region is bigger than it actually is or by displacing the actual territorial borders slightly. To circumvent this problem I have had to compile maps from a large as a variety of sources as possible and use the average or most common borders from these. One should also note that the various territorial borders shown in my drawings should be taken lightly as many are changed yearly from the various border skirmishes, battles, and treaties (or monthly in the case of High Rock).

A more disturbing fact is the inconsistancy of the shoreline throughout the various reliable maps currently in existance. Unfortunately, although we like to think of Tamriel as physically constant and unchanging, this is far from the truth. Global shorelines change yearly depending on a variety of factors, mostly due to moon alignment and major climate shifts. This is especially of concern in the low lieing coastal wetlands as found on Summerset Isle and Black Marsh where a change in sea level of but a dozen feet can move the shoreland as much as a 100 miles. There are similar natural phenomena which can make producing an accurate shoreline difficult such as earthquakes, volcanos (especially in Vvardenfell), and landslides. Add to this the man-made occurences such as magic (need I mention the vanishing Isle of Artaeum) and major landscaping (such as in the Imperial City) and one may rightly believe reproducing a truly accurate coastline is nigh impossible.

Dispite all these obvious difficulties, I believe I have produced one of the more accurate global representations of Tamriel to date. I have used several editors of different race and origin to ensure any inaccuries due to my unconcious bias are removed. Sources from every major sentient race across Tamriel have been compiled and researched. Where any major ambiguity or uncertainty exists, I have personally travelled there to ensure accurate information.

One should also be aware that the current state of my maps are merely in their first edition and are quite rough. I expect to go through several more editions before finalizing and legally publishing my compiled works. Any errors, omissions, suggestions, or comments should be made now before such my changes are finalized. Enjoy!
