Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Your employer's master...
...is actually an orc shaman in disguise

Adventurer Wanted[edit]

Speak to a merchant or innkeeper, who says:

"My name is (employer's name). My master has asked me to find a brave adventurer for a dangerous mission. I cannot tell you more, other than to say that it is worth (random gold) gold pieces to whoever succeeds. Are you interested?"

or

"Call me (employer's name). I know someone that may have some work of interest. There's (random gold) gold in it for whoever can do the job."

Accept[edit]

The merchant or innkeeper goes on:

"Go to (tavern). There you will find my master, (master's name)."

or

"Ask for (master's name) in (tavern) and (he/she) will have a job for you."

Decline[edit]

The merchant or innkeeper answers:

"I shall seek elsewhere for a hero to fulfill my master's quest."

Meet the Master[edit]

Your employer's master will be waiting at a tavern in the same town as your employer. Head there and speak to this mysterious figure, who says:

"Know me for who I really am. I am your mortal enemy (orc shaman's name)! I have a special fate in store for you."

The master will then transform into his or her true form: an orc shaman. Your mortal enemy will then attack you after casting Free Action, Spell Reflection, and Shield spells on himself. If you don't kill the orc shaman quickly enough, you will be frozen as he casts some sort of spell:

The orc shaman's chanting rises

Suddenly, you will be teleported deep within a random dungeon somewhere in the region.

If you manage to kill the orc shaman in time, loot his body and get your reputation boost with the quest giver's faction.

Interlude[edit]

To escape from the dungeon, you must find the exit (unless you had the foresight to cast a Recall anchor) and head back to town. Return to the quest giver, who will say:

"Don't hurt me, (player's name)! I didn't know what (master's name) was planning. I ain't got no beef with you, honest. (he/she [sic]) didn't tell me nothin', I swear, (he/she) just paid me to send you to (him/her). It's (him/her) you want, not me, right? I hear (he/she)'s moved to (second town). Look for (him/her) there."

Follow the orc shaman to the next town and ask around until someone points you to his residence.

Reward[edit]

Enter the residence. Sometimes the door is locked, so be prepared with an Open spell if you don't want to do some lockpicking to get in, or use your weapon to batter the door (beware of the town guards as forceful intrusion counts as burglary).

When you strike the orc shaman he will shout:

"I don't know how you escaped from (dungeon) (player's first name). It won't do you much good though. Prepare to die!"

Kill the orc to complete the quest (with or without being teleported) and following message pops up:

(Orc shaman's name) is dead. Your enemies will think twice before attempting such treachery again.

Collect any loot from the shaman's body and gain +5 reputation points with The Merchants.

Reputation Gain/Loss[edit]

A successfully completed quest results in a reputation gain according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Questgiver's faction +5
Questgiver's associated factions +2

A failed quest (time limit expired) results in a reputation loss according to the table below.

Notes[edit]

  • This quest is almost identical to An Unexpected Journey, except that it is an orc shaman who is after you this time and the in-game text is slightly different. Also, this quest requires that you have at least one reputation point with the Merchants; An Unexpected Journey does not have any reputation requirement.

Bugs[edit]

  • When you hit the orc shaman and he teleports you to the dungeon, he says the speech he shouldn't say until you have found him at his hideout.
    • This issue is corrected by DFQFIX; the orc will only say his speech if you confront him at the hideout.
  • After escaping the dungeon, you are expected to seek out the quest giver to learn what is going on. However, if you return to the tavern where you fought the orc shaman, he will still be there. If you find and kill him this way, the quest can be completed without having to travel to the second town.
    • This is corrected by DFQFIX; the orc shaman is removed from the tavern as soon as you are teleported to the dungeon, and you must complete the quest the correct way.
  • The "master" can be male or female, but some of the quest text and dialogue are not coded with variable pronouns. Thus, if the master is a lady she may be inadvertently referred to as "he."
  • Additionally, there is no female variant of the orc shaman in the game. However, some of the game text will still refer to the shaman with whichever pronouns are currently being used for the master.

Additional Dialogue[edit]

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "I heard that an orc was spotted in town today. I hope they catch him."

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "Did you hear the one about the (player's race) that got teleported to the bottom of a dungeon? Its really funny! Oh. Sorry."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "Hey! You're that (player's race) that killed the orc witch doctor! Good work!"

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "Ok, Ok. I guess I owe you one for that incident with the orc shaman. He was magicked to look like a regular guy."

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "Just stay away! I didn't mean to get anyone hurt. That orc was magicked to look like a regular guy. Its not my fault he teleported you into a dungeon."
