Location(s): Any Noble
Reward: Random gold
Reputation Gain: see Reputation Gain/Loss
ID: r0c10y04
Required Reputation: 10 reputation or more
Difficulty: Hard

The wicked necromancer can appear in many forms, like this hammer-wielding sorcerer

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to a noble.
  2. Head to the dungeon the noble mentioned to you.
  3. Find your target within the dungeon and kill it.
  4. Return to the noble within the time limit for your reward.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Wizard may choose to overwhelm you with powerful spells...
...or bring a few friends to the fight.

Malevolent Magicka[edit]

Speak to a noble, who says:

"The whining peasants who work my land near (dungeon) have long complained about evil wizardry being practiced in that dungeon. It appears that this time they may be right. I am in need of an assassin with enough time to travel to (dungeon) and destroy the necromantic sorceror [sic] there. I am prepared to pay (random gold) gold pieces for this service. Are you interested?"

Accept[edit]

The noble goes on:

"(Oath), that's grand. I need to have this wizard extinguished in (time limit) days, so you will probably want to get on the road right away. Good luck, (player's first name), and show no mercy."

Decline[edit]

The noble answers:

"Really? I would have thought this was your sort of an assignment. How inconvenient."

Slaying the Necromancer[edit]

This quest is a standard dungeon crawl. The toughest thing will be to locate the wizard in the random dungeon. Your target will be a battlemage, a mage, an orc shaman or a sorcerer, each with a 25% chance of appearing. When you find and hit the target for the first time, the wizard will shout:

"You must be the latest poor fool (noble's name) has hired to try to kill me. Your bones will soon join those of your compatriots, scattered about my dungeon!"

The necromancer will likely toss some powerful spells at you, so it would be to your advantage to have protection against these. When the target dies, a message appears:

(Wizard's name) the wizard is dead.

Once you have killed the wizard, return to the noble and report success.

Reward[edit]

When you report back after you taking care of the wizard, the noble will thank you by saying:

"The mighty hero returns! The farmers are overjoyed that their land is free of black magic, and I share their joy. Accept the (random gold) gold pieces, (player's first name), with my gratitude."

Note: if you kill the evil wizard you will lose reputation with The Merchants, even if a logical connection between the wizard's death and a possible disadvantage for the Merchants is not obvious.

Additional Dialogue[edit]

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "You can almost feel the malevolent magicka building."
  • "Some sorceror has vowed to reduce (noble's name)'s land to rubble."

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "That sorceror in (dungeon) has apparently moved on."
  • "Apparently some adventurer spooked the sorceror out of (dungeon)."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "The Mad Wizard of (dungeon) was apparently slain by a brave (player's race)."
  • "Had that sorceror survived, (noble's name) would have been in deep trouble."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "Ah, the slayer of the mad wizard is back. How are you, my friend?"
  • "A pleasure to see you again, o killer of mad wizards."

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "You weren't expecting a reward for your failure to slay that wizard, I hope. You're lucky I don't have you flogged."
  • "So, the (player's race) returns. So, I imagine, will the wizard you failed to slay. Run along now."
