Waking Dreams is an area of Hermaeus Mora's plane of Oblivion, Apocrypha. There are six zones (or chapters) in the area: Chapter I, Chapter II, Chapter III, Chapter IV, Chapter V, and Chapter VI.

The Black Book needed to access Waking Dreams is found inside the Temple of Miraak. You must complete the quest The Temple of Miraak in order to retrieve the book.

The realm is inhabited by Daedra called Seekers and Lurkers. Tentacles constantly breach the acidic dark waters and sometimes whip at you, causing a significant amount of damage if they manage to hit you. The acidic waters with the tentacles are also corrosive and cause damage if stepped in.

Chapter I[edit]

Miraak at the base of the tower

When you first read the book during the quest The Temple of Miraak, you will be transported to an area at the base of a massive tower near Miraak. After a short monologue, he will instruct his seekers to "send you back where you came from". You will then be expelled from Apocrypha, but the next time you read the book when on Solstheim, you will be free to explore the area.

Chapter I opens in a large open area. A short distance behind the starting point is a table with copies of Bone, Part I, Changed Ones, and Thirsk, A Revised History. Near the wall to the northwest behind the second pillar is a pod, with another pod by the grate in the wall to the southeast. To the north is a platform with two fonts of magicka and the book to Chapter II.

Chapter II[edit]

Chapter II starts on a platform at the bottom of a huge tower, with two seekers patrolling the area. The path ascends three sets of stairs, with a table to the right on the second landing with a copy of The Guardian and the Traitor and a scroll of fireball. At the top of the stairs, to the west on the ledge is a pod, and to the north is a table with a copy of the Smithing skill book Heavy Armor Forging.

Along the path and across the bridge is a raised platform with On Apocrypha: Boneless Limbs. Taking this book extends the stairs and opens the gate to the next area. To the north on the ledge on this side of the bridge is a pod. Beyond the gate is a balcony overlooking a sea of tentacles, with a font of magicka and the book to Chapter III.

Chapter III[edit]

Chapter III starts in a corridor. To the right is a room behind a closed gate, and ahead is a room with two seekers and two fonts of magicka. The corridor to the southeast leads to a raised platform, with a pod at the bottom of a set of stairs on the far side. On the platform is another pod next to a table with a copy of the Alchemy skill book Song of the Alchemists, a scroll of fast healing, and a common soul gem. Opposite the table is On Apocrypha: Delving Pincers. Taking this book opens the gate near the start of the chapter. Beyond the gate is a room with a font of magicka and a scrye, which reveals a corridor to the south.

The corridor passes a font of magicka and ascends to a font of stamina and a table with a copy of the Enchanting skill book Catalogue of Weapon Enchantments, copies of History of Raven Rock, Vol. II and The Poison Song, Book IV, a scroll of fast healing, a scroll of stoneflesh, and a lesser soul gem.

The path continues to the west to reenter the main section of the tower. To the south is a pod and a scrye, which opens a gate to the northwest to a small room with a vessel. The walkway south across the center of the chamber leads to a pod, a font of magicka, and On Apocrypha: Prying Orbs. Taking this book opens a gate to the west. Beyond the gate is a corridor that passes a font of magicka to end at a font of stamina and the book to Chapter IV.

Chapter IV[edit]

Chapter IV starts on a high platform, with several walkways and platforms below. Two seekers are down the stairs to the right. To the southwest is a font of stamina followed by a pod. Along the east wall near the lowest level is a table with copies of Killing - Before You're Killed, 2920, Sun's Dusk, v11, The Anticipations, and Horker Attacks. The corridor to the next area is to the south.

The corridor continues to a junction and a table with a random potion of healing. The path branches to the east and south, with fonts of magicka and stamina at the start of the corridor to the east. Both corridors retract when entered, and two seekers appear. After both corridors have retracted, the corridor to the west shifts position to lead to a large room. To the southwest is a raised platform with a pod and a table with a scroll of muffle, a scroll of fury, a scroll of oakflesh, and a scroll of firebolt.

On another platform up the stairs from the first is a font of magicka and On Apocrypha: Gnashing Blades. Taking this book reveals a corridor to the south on the bottom level. The corridor leads to a crossroads. To the left is an empty alcove, to the right is an alcove with two tables, and ahead is what appears to be another alcove with two more tables. However, once you step into this alcove, the corridor extends ahead. A trove of twenty-six books is on three of the tables (see the list to the right), while on the fourth table is a scroll of detect life, a scroll of fast healing, a scroll of fury, and a greater soul gem.

The corridor continues to the east past two fonts of stamina and a pod. In the next room is another font of stamina, while the path continues to the right. At the top of the first set of stairs is a seeker guarding a table with a common soul gem and copies of Horker Attacks, The Poison Song, Book IV, Shadowmarks, Five Songs of King Wulfharth, and Myths of Sheogorath. At the top of the next set of stairs is a font of stamina, with nothing else of interest on the rest of the ascending walkways except a scrye at the end. The scrye again repositions the entrance corridor to allow access to a new area.

The corridor continues to the next room, with copies of Thirsk, A Revised History, The Poison Song, Book III, and The Five Far Stars on the ground next to another scrye to the west, and a closed gate nearby to the north. The scrye opens a gate to a small treasure room visible just behind the scrye accessed by a short corridor starting to the southwest. Passing the pool in the middle of the room on the way to the corridor causes a lurker to rise from the water. In the treasure room is a vessel and a table with two soul gems (one petty and one lesser), a scroll of frost thrall, a scroll of magelight, and a copy of the Spell Tome: Conjure Seeker (only if your Conjuration skill is at least level 40). The scrye to open the gate to the north is just outside the treasure room. Beyond the gate is a stairway ascending past two fonts of stamina to end at a font of magicka and the book to Chapter V.

Chapter V[edit]

Chapter V starts in a corridor, with a font of magicka at the starting point. The corridor passes a font of stamina before entering the top level of the tower. Three seekers guard the area, three pods are along the outer walkway to the west and north, and four pedestals are also on the outer walkway. In order to access the book to Chapter VI, the four "On Apocrypha" books collected earlier must be placed on the four pedestals, and will become irretrievable after the fourth book is placed. The solution, starting from the pedestal near the entrance and moving clockwise, is Gnashing Blades—Prying Orbs—Boneless Limbs—Delving Pincers. Once the four books are placed in the correct order, the book to Chapter VI appears on the pedestal in the center of the tower.

Chapter VI[edit]

Chapter VI starts in a room with a wall in the middle. Around to the right is a table with a copy of the Destruction skill book The Art of War Magic, a scroll of stoneflesh, a scroll of grand healing, and a greater soul gem. Around to the left is a pod that may be difficult to activate; you will need to aim the cursor at its lower section. The corridor ascends to the west past an open gate to a large open area. Two seekers guard the area, and if you have not started the quest, a lurker rises from the pool in the middle of the area when you pass the gate, which closes behind you. Flanking the gate are two fonts of stamina, with two more fonts of stamina on either side of the word wall ahead. The wall teaches part of the Dragon Aspect shout, applying the term "word wall" literally, as it appears as a scrolling book.

If the quest At the Summit of Apocrypha has not started, you will be unable to progress further. After the quest has started, Sahrotaar will appear once the word has been learned. You must use all three words of Bend Will to force him to obey you. Once you are riding Sahrotaar, he will fly northwest over a platform with two seekers and a lurker, and will then head to the top of the tower. There, you will confront Miraak and two other dragons, Kruziikrel and Relonikiv. Once Miraak is defeated, Hermaeus will appear, kill Miraak, and raise the Waking Dreams book from the pool in the middle. Your reward is the ability to reassign perk points. At the cost of one dragon soul per skill, you will be able to choose a skill from which to remove your activated perks, and can then use the reclaimed perk points to unlock any perks you wish, including perks in the initially chosen skill. More details can be found here. To exit this part of Apocrypha, use the non-circular part of the black book.
