The Aldmer (tr. "first folk" or "elder folk") were the original Merethic Era proto-mer who inhabited the coasts of Tamriel. They are said to be the first inhabitants of Nirn. The race slowly evolved through cultural diffusion into the various present day Mer. The conservative peoples that stayed in Summerset Isle became the Altmer. The individuals who broke off from tradition and explored the rest of Tamriel variously became the Falmer, Bosmer, Dwemer and Ayleids. The Chimer were a religous group who exiled themselves from Summerset and later became the Dunmer), while the Orsimer were corrupted by Boethiah's destruction/humiliation/transformation of Trinimac. Bretons possess a significant amount of Aldmeri blood from the interbreeding of the Nedes and the elves of High Rock.

As a race, the Aldmer probably resembled the present day Altmer, as it is alleged that the Altmer have selectively bred as to resemble their Aldmer ancestors.

The Aldmer homeland of Aldmeris has been, in some accounts, described as an endless city being built upon over and over again. However, one cannot be sure as to whether this is true or if Aldmeris was ever even a place at all.
