These are all glitches that occur in Morrowind. The list is very incomplete as the number of bugs in Morrowind is quite high. Before trying any of these glitches out for yourself, it is highly recommended that you save, since some of these are well known to either kill the player or cause the game to crash.

[edit] All Versions

These will work on any version of Morrowind.

[edit] Werewolf/Vampire

There is a way that you can become a werewolf and a vampire at the same time, but note it only works if you have completed the Main Quest on the Bloodmoon expansion and have received Hircine's Ring. First, you must become a vampire and then equip Hircine's Ring. The result is a werewolf's attributes and a vampire's attributes combined. If you either let the game idle or pan around your body with the camera, you will see a werewolf's body with a backwards head, corresponding to your race and gender.

[edit] Free Weapons

This will give you an unlimited supply of weapons and shields. First, go to a Mages Guild and buy a summon spell or scroll that carries an equipped weapon, like a Skeleton or Dremora. Then cast the spell. When the summon appears, kill it and click on its corpse. If done quick enough you should appear in its inventory. Now you can take its weapons and armor for free! This works with any Summon spell or scroll. The better the summon the better the weapons. Golden Saints are the best, and sometimes give up Daedric Shields (highest enchant value in the game). Note: You must kill it in 3 hits or less, or it will become hostile and activating it's corpse before the game starts to "clean up" becomes difficult. The game may also freeze, but usually only if the body disappears at the same time as you clicked on it (or if you "dispose of corpse"). It should also be noted that if you take the weapons without looking, you can cause a crash. If the weapon or shields name starts with numbers, do not take it - it is a "temporary reference" and will cause the game to crash if you take them. Generally, this may cause your game to be slightly more unstable, so after doing this for a while, you might want to save and restart your game.

[edit] Cartoon Walls

If you get enough speed (well over 100) on your character, you can run through objects such as walls and doors. Be careful though, running through interior doors that lead to other cells, because there is often no floor on the other side. If you have levitation, this is handy for taking a shortcut through tall and winding towers, like the Telvanni Council Chambers passage to the Hermitage.

[edit] Constant Effects Enchantments with Rat Souls?

First you'll need a grand soulgem with a Golden Saint soul. Once you've gotten one of those you won't need more of them. Go to the enchanting menu and apply the desired item to enchant, Golden Saint soulgem, and the spell. Now apply "constant effect" instead of "cast when used", and then click on the soulgem in order to make it "delete" it. Then select another soulgem like a common soulgem with a Lame Corprus. The result will be a "constant effect" enchanted item without needing to use up the Golden Saint soulgem!

(Note: This only works in older versions of the game. Patch revisions "fixed" this.)

[edit] Escape Census and Excise Office

With much persistence, it is possible to escape the confines of the Census and Excise Office walls before even entering the first building. Although there is no practical purpose for this, it is still mildly entertaining to walk around with a character who has no health bar and has not yet learned to jump, pick items up, or sleep. On your left after crossing the gangplank of the ship you start on, there is a tree. If you run against the roots of the tree on the left side (nearer to the water) at just the right angle, you can manage to escape straight through the wall. Once out, you are still impervious to any creature that attacks you and can still drown.

Another way is to go out into the small courtyard that leads to the second building, once you are there go left of the barrel into the corner between the second building and the wall and jump forward, if it is done right you will go through the wall to the other side, you will be able to do everything like you normally would and you don't get a bounty for any crime. The only downside is that you cannot save the game.

Another way is to unlock the gate with a lock level of 10, just open the console, click the gate, type "unlock" (without quotes) and press enter.

[edit] Falling through the floor

In many locations, sometimes one falls through the floor and ends up swimming beneath the geometry. If you are extremely unlucky, you will fall into endless geometry which will kill you instantly, or send you flinging back to where you fell in, also killing you. Recall, Intervention and Levitation help in escaping if you did not die in the process. At other times you may find a 'stairway to heaven' effect, where you walk up an invisible hill in mid-air. Most of the time these issues can be rectified by reloading the game or using the command "FixMe".

[edit] Leaky Ceilings

If you are under some sort of shelter in an exterior cell (like the shelter near the Silt Strider in Gnisis for example) and it is raining, you should notice that the rain actually falls through the ceiling. Vivec is an excellent place to see this while under any of the covered walkways of the cantons.

[edit] Mysterious Shadows

Shadows are naked and pass through certain surfaces. All weapon shadows are the specific item's "iron" variant. This can happen in both interior and exterior cells.

[edit] Overflow Loot Bag

If you drop enough items in a shop (but not in a chest or other container), the next time you enter a cloth sack will have spawned labeled "Overflow Loot Bag". If you check the bag, some of the items you dropped will be in the bag. After this point, any items dropped on the floor will go into the bag, but you can't put anything into the bag directly (only by dropping it on the ground). While this can be done in both the Xbox and PC versions, it takes 1024 items for it to happen on PC, compared to only 256 on Xbox.

This can be a helpful glitch. If you go to libraries/bookstores, and steal/buy as many books as you can, then drop as many as needed to create stacks in your inventory so that when you drop an item from it, it won't ask how many, and just drops one (believed to be around 13). Now take those books to the place you want to create a loot bag, and drop every book, individually. You'll need to drop 256 books on the Xbox, 1024 on the PC. When all are dropped, you should have a loot bag, possibly with a few books in it. You may have to leave the cell and return.

  • Anything you drop on the floor in this location will go in the loot bag, which has an unlimited capacity.
  • You cannot put anything in the bag, but you can drop it on the floor, and the game will move it to the bag.
  • You can take items out of the bag normally.
  • You can have only one loot bag per cell.
  • It is a bad idea to try to create loot bags with small items. The loot bag will be created on TOP of the 256th item. If the 256th item is a small item that you need, you now can't get it, ever, because you can't move the loot bag, and you can't move your pointer to get the item, and the item will never move into the bag (the game only moves NEW items over the 256 limit into the bag).
  • When you drop an item on the floor so it goes into the bag, you have to leave the cell and return to see it actually in the bag.
  • If you create about a half dozen loot bags (Caldera is a good example), you'll have places to put any items without worrying about how much is there. If you have the GotY version, or the Tribunal patch, placing loot bags in High Fane, Mournhold, or Sotha Sil (when you recieve the Mazed Band at the end), can be helpful to quickly get/drop items from anywhere.

[edit] Redoran Canton Disappearance

Sometimes, a glitch occurs that causes the entire Redoran Canton in Vivec to disappear. The only things remaining are the doors that lead to the interior cells, which can be reached by levitation. The exact cause of this isn't known, but it isn't limited to the Redoran Canton. Among the other places where it occurs frequently are Ebonheart, Fort Frostmoth and Balmora. Strangely enough, the Canton (or whatever has disappeared) tends to reappear given enough time.

[edit] See Red

If you take damage at the same time as you leave a cell, when the next area loads, the edges of the screen will be stuck on red as they are whenever you take damage. This is particularly common for vampires escaping from the sun. The effect will last as you walk around and enter new areas, and even after resting. You can undo this by taking damage in any way or by saving and reloading.

[edit] Trueflame Color Malfunction (Tribunal)

There is a color malfunction with some weapons. Trueflame will sometimes lose its fire or become all different colors.

[edit] Water Goggles

If you have your head halfway above and below the surface of the water and can see the actual line in first person, you can see underwater as you would in air. (This only works on the surface of the water).

[edit] Air walking

While in Vivec, if you jump on top of the ledge, and then walk off, you can walk. You hear the footsteps, and you don't get hurt. This does not work if you jump.

[edit] Invisible Entry

Normally, you cannot enter a room (cell), by clicking on the door, while invisible, and stay invisible. However, you can cast invisibility just before you enter a room you want to be invisible in, and immediately (before the cast animation is finished), click the door. When the new cell loads, you'll be invisible.

Warning: The game sometimes crashes when doing this.

Found on Xbox GotY, it is unknown if it works on other platforms/versions.

[edit] Texture Glitch

During a sandstorm or while you're underwater, if you have a magic item, it will be glowing so white that you can barely see the rest of the body. However, in my opinion, this may not be a glitch.

[edit] Journal Error

Radd Hard-Heart's name is incorrectly spelled as Radd Heart-Hart in your journal entry for "Rescue Dandsa."

[edit] Sleepers have no rights

If you repeatedly talk about the "Sixth House" topic to a sleeper, his disposition drops to the point where he will attack you. Unlike others you taunt however, their attack is delayed and if you kill them just after you close the dialog with some high-damage touch spell or paralyze them first, nobody will report it as a crime. They usually have some minor items, even armor, but dont wear them, have low defense and low magic resistance. May be a non-predicted delay in source code. [verification needed -- any verification?]

[edit] Xbox (Non-Game of the Year)

These will only work on the non-GOTY Xbox version of Morrowind, unless otherwise noted.

[edit] Creeper Glitch

With this glitch you can earn lots of money, however it kills the Creeper, the merchant with second largest amount of gold in the game. This can be done in GOTY.

  1. Go to Caldera
  2. Go to Ghorak Manor
  3. You will find "Creeper" here
  4. But first go to the highest floor in Ghorak Manor
  5. There you'll find some Orcish Armor items
  6. Pick them up, go to creeper and sell the stuff
  7. You will now have 6000+ GP (Gold Pieces)
  8. You can do the trick faster if you only have 5000 GP in your inventory
  9. Now sell 5000 GP to creeper, you will get 5000 in return but creeper can't buy things anymore
  10. Now sleep for 24 hours
  11. Now creeper has its 5000 back, sell 5000 GP again
  12. If you would kill Creeper, he will have 10,000 in his Inventory (which is indeed the plan)

So if you want to earn 1,000,000 you'll have to keep on selling money to creeper, but keep notes of "How much you'll get in return" if you kill him. This also works with the Mudcrab Merchant.

[edit] Duplicating Quest Items

If you find a quest that upon activation puts an item somewhere (for example, Big Helende's dispel potion formula) and keep asking about the item you're supposed to get, more and more will generate.

[edit] Fury

The sword called Fury found in Kogoruhn will cause all of your armor stats to drain to zero and the only way to get your stats back is to retrain in all the armor classes.

[edit] Journal/Quest Location Errors

The incorrect location for Felen Maryon is given by Big Helende. Location given is Bal Fell, but the correct location is Tel Branora.

Ajira tells you that the Warlock's Ring can be found in a cave on an island West of Bal Fell, when it is actually East of Bal Fell.

At the start of Azura's shrine quest, she say the priestess's island is "north of Dagon Fel", when it is actually to the west.

[edit] Removing Bounties For Free

If you're a member of the Thieves Guild, it is possible to drop all your gold and still talk to whomever takes the bounty off your head. Provided you are in the same cell when you do this, they'll still offer to take it off for the half price, and once you agree to have it removed it will say that X amount of gold has been deducted from your inventory, even though you have in fact lost nothing.

Note: Only works in the Balmora and Sadrith Mora Thieves Guilds.

[edit] Soul Trap Glitch

While this is commonly called the Soul Trap Glitch, in actuality, it can be used with any spell that has a target setting and duration of 1 second. (Does work in GOTY)

  1. First buy Soultrap and Enhance Attribute/non-destructive spells (not scrolls).
  2. Next make a new spell with whatever spell effect you want for 1 second on self.
  3. Then on the same spell, have soultrap on target for 1 sec.
  4. Cast the spell and try not to hit anybody and Presto! Whatever spell you created is now on Constant Effect!

Note: Some people have had problems with this cheat. If this does not work for you, another option is to change the FIRST effect to TWO seconds and cast the spell directly beneath you. This glitch will not work if the spell does not hit anything, like if you launched it into the sky.

Bad Ideas for CE Enchantments: Reasons:
Bound Items Just don't, since you can't unequip them.If you use Bound Armor with soul trap with a full suit of it your games will crash.(?)
Chameleon Makes it impossible to speak to NPCs
Levitate Makes it impossible to rest without a bed
Reflect This seems to do the opposite and reflect things back onto you.
Waterbreathing Use only after the Pilgrimage Of The Seven Graces Quest for the Tribunal Temple.
Waterwalking There are many times when you HAVE to swim under water to get somewhere or find some treasure.
Fortify Speed Causes problems where you move faster than the game generates terrain

[edit] Immortal Enemies

If you attack an NPC with a probe (by pulling the attack trigger to maximum with a weapon equipped and then switching your weapon to a probe via the inventory went menu), the NPC will lose all his health, according to the health bar (meaning this also happens in GOTY), but they will remain alive. Both the NPC and the player will go to Hand-to-Hand combat (the probe will read zero uses). You can pull out a daedric longsword and slash the NPC multiple times but he still won't die. The only way I could get him to die was to leave 10 constant effect golden saints in the room with him and leave the room for 3 days. After this I implemented the same technique on normal citizens, summoned beings, random monsters, even Vivec himself, and got the same effect. Also, the probe reads that it has 0 uses but it remains in my inventory and is still usable. The only thing that I could imagine doing with this is using on NPC that you are escorting, but then they would try to attack you so that wouldn't work out very well anyways. Very odd and very useless glitch. On a side note I've noticed this tentatively works with opening locks, at least as far as my experience is concerned I've opened every 100 lock I've ever encountered doing this.

[edit] Instant Kill

This glitch, while unreliable, will allow you kill your opponent with one hit from the lockpick. This does not always work, but the lockpick is more likely to kill compared to the probe, which is more likely to make the enemy "invulnerable". With this glitch, it is possible to kill Dagoth Ur after your first confrontation with him. When he starts his speech about it being naive to attempt to save Morrowind from him, you can kill him with the lockpick. He will crumble, fall, and vanish into nothing, but you will still have access to his 'corpse'. It has absolutely nothing in it when you kill him this way, but it does stop him from attacking you from behind as you are destroying the heart. His death though triggers nothing, as it is the heart that is sustaining the blight and mind illness. The best lockpick to use is the apprentice variety, as it is the worst quality, and there is no need to worry about triggering the negative effect.

[edit] Take Damage When Jumping Through Doors

In this glitch, if you jump at just the right time before you open a door (open the door while in mid-air), you will take damage and fall on the ground when you proceed inside the building you are going into.

[edit] PC

These glitches will only work on the PC version, and some of them only on specific patch versions.

[edit] Blindness Glitches

If you Quicksave your game when taking damage (either ongoing from a spell or right at the moment something hits you), the screen will darken as if you have a Blind effect on your character. Conversely, if you ARE blinded (by a spell or, theoretically, the Boots of Blinding Speed), hitting Quicksave makes the blindness go away. Magic!

[edit] Falling Through the World

Again, in the PC version, hitting Quicksave can cause weird things to happen...in this case, if you Quicksave in the middle of a jump, when you land, you may fall through the floor instead of landing. The specifics of when to do it when jumping is unknown, but it does seem to work regardless of jump height/distance (related to Acrobatics skill).

Of course, falling through the world can cause other problems. If the cell you're in has a water base, you land in the water and can swim around, but must levitate or turn off collision in order to get back up to where you were before. Otherwise, you fall for a while, and then are instantly teleported back to wherever you entered the cell once you reach the "bottom" of the cell.

This glitch may or may not work outdoors.

[edit] Fury

The sword called Fury found in Kogoruhn will cause all of your armor stats to drain to zero and the only way to get your stats back is to retrain in all the armor classes. This will only happen in unpatched versions of Morrowind.

[edit] God Speed

Go to a Mages Guild and learn the spell "Bound Boots." This spell summons a pair of Daedric Boots which have the effect "Fortify Speed +10" for the duration of the spell. How to abuse this? Ask a spellmaker at the Mages Guild to make a Bound Boots spell for you with 0 duration. Now cast the spell. You will not receive bound boots because the duration is zero, they will disappear instantly, but since the boots disappear instantly, apparently the game does not check to remove the effect. So you now have a permanent +10 speed increase! And you can do this as much as you want! So enjoy. This can be done with any bound item.

[edit] Reusable Scrolls

You can take any scroll, equip it in the magic menu, then drop it, and it will still appear as the active magic. You can then cast the scroll, repeat the process, and then cast it again and again.

Note: After installing Tribunal, this glitch no longer works.

[edit] Summoned Item Bug

You know the bound spells which summon Daedric armor or weapons? Usually this only lasts around 30-60 seconds, but it is possible to get past this:

  1. Use the spell to summon the item.
  2. Take it off your body and put it in your inventory.
  3. Take it out of your inventory and place it on the ground.
  4. Rest for at least 1 hour.
  5. Pick it up off the ground after resting and there you go! It will now last forever

Note: This will not work in patched/expansions installed versions of Morrowind or on any Xbox version. In The Xbox GOTY version or any patched PC version the following message appears anytime you attempt to drop summoned items: 'you cannot drop summoned items'. The original Xbox version, you just can't pick up summoned items. You may sometimes be able to make a summoned item permanent by repairing it.

[edit] Boots of Blinding speed bug

If you drink a potion of magic resistance or use another effect wich renders you impervious to blind then immediately put the Boots of Blinding Speed on, you will not be blinded but will retain the speed effect until you take the boots off, this also works in the Xbox version but is better with a 100% magic resistance spell for 2 sec used on self.

[edit] Infinite Arrows

Equip a bow or crossbow (doesn't matter which) then one arrow or bolt (better if it's enchanted). Aim at an enemy and draw the bowstring back, open the inventory and remove the arrow, your character will still shoot the bow and the enemy will be hit by this arrow, re-equip the arrow/bolt and do it again, this gets quite boring after a while.

This also works on the X-Box

If you have the Bloodmoon expansion, you can also do this with the Ebony Arrow of Slaying from the Thirsk treehole, you will be able to kill any creature without a Reflect, Spell Absorption or Resist Magicka in one hit.

[edit] Easy Mages guild Ranks

Go to Huleen's hut without taking any quests from the mages guild, pick the lock and kill the scamp, then go and talk to Edwinna Elbert in Ald Ruhn and she'll reward you for the quest and will even give you more quests, this is also a way to get a copy of the book you "stole" for your own collection.

[edit] Sell Nothing For Money

Obtain any number of stackable items (the more you have and the more expensive they are the better), and go to a trader, preferably one with alot of money. Here, instead of selling the items all at the same time, sell one at a time (the fast way is pressing CTRL and clicking the item). This already has a handy effect - the items will sell for more, as the trader has interpreted each at its own worth, instead of reducing the price for a stack of multiple items. But it doesn't end there. After you have sold all of the stacked items (this may take some time, but is well worth it in most cases), SHIFT click (or click and select all) the items from the traders buy window. This will work as if you were taking back the items, BUT here is the trick - you will notice that you take back the items at what the trader thinks they are worth, which is low. Since you take back an amount that is less than what you are selling them for, there is a sum of money that is left in the AMOUNT SOLD bar. Just click offer, and the trader will buy nothing for something! A good item to do this with is gold, as the value always rounds up to 1. In the patched version, the fix implemented by Bethesda has failed to solve the problem, instead of preventing the glitch from happening completely, you are simply disallowed to sell nothing for something. To overcome this, offer 1 gold for sale, and its done.

[edit] Corpse Destroying Weapon

Buy a weapon and enchant it with the following: Cast when Strikes, Levitate 4pts for [keep adding 1 sec till enchant value is full]. When INSIDE a building, kill someone in 2 or more hits and their corpe will fall through the floor. Doesn't work on guards.

[edit] Leveling Glitch

Obtain any level you desire. Get your endurance over 100 with enchantments and then train your Heavy Armor skill to 100, Seanwen is the master trainer for this skill. He can still train this skill more, providing you have over 100 endurance, though it never actually rises above 100. He will also only charge you a 75 gold fee per training session after 100. This glitch works with every other master trainer in the game, and on the xbox version.

[edit] Weapon-switch crash

When you are in the middle of an attack animation, and attempt to equip/change/unequip weapon using the hotkey binding, the game will crash. Not possible on Xbox version as there are no hotkeys, and switching the weapon using the menu will result in a message, but not a crash.
