Hlaren Ramoran

Hlaren Ramoran is a Dark Elf knight, a Councilman for House Redoran and the lord of Gnisis. He can be found in the private quarters of his manor in Ald'ruhn. He has a few duties for you if you are a fellow member of the House, and even if you are not, you need to gain his support to become the Redoran Hortator.

He wears a near full set of dwarven armor, including the cuirass, both pauldrons, both bracers, greaves, and boots. He also wears an extravagant shirt with matching belt and pants and he carries a dwarven battle axe. Aside from his natural resistance to fire and the sanctuary provided by his ancestors, he knows no spells.

Main Quest[edit]

House Redoran[edit]

House Telvanni[edit]

  • Mages Guild Monopoly: Convince three Redoran Councilors to support a proposal to allow House Telvanni to compete with the Mages Guild.

Dialogue[edit]

Hlaren Ramoran's default greeting depends on whether he has spoken with you before, and whether you are a high-ranking member of House Redoran:

  • [If this is your first time speaking with him.] "I am Hlaren Ramoran, Lord of West Gash and a councilor of House Redoran. Who, exactly, are you?"
  • [If you are a Councilman are higher in House Redoran.] "Yes, %PCRank?"
  • [Else.]"So we meet again, %PCName. What do you need from the Lord of West Gash?"

Should you be expelled from House Redoran, Hlaren's greeting will change to reflect this:

  • [If this is the first time that you have been expelled from House Redoran.] "You have been expelled from House Redoran, %PCName. You should make amends."
  • [Else. Disposition -10.] "What are you doing here, traitor?"

Quest-Related Events[edit]

Redoran Hortator[edit]

Just like most of his fellow Redoran councilors, Hlaren Ramoran will only give you his vote for Hortator if you either are a high-ranking member of House Redoran, or if you have already gained Athyn Sarethi's support in this matter:

  • Redoran Hortator
    • "The Hortator is a war leader of a Great House. Why do you ask?"
    • Ask how a Hortator is chosen.
      • "Only the Redoran councilors can choose a Hortator for House Redoran, and it must be unanimous. The Hortator's duty is defined by ancient custom, but, in essence, a Hortator is a House champion, and must be both skilled in combat and known for his courage and honor."
    • Tell your story and ask to be confirmed as Hortator.
      • [If you are a Kinsman or higher in House Redoran.] "I believe your story. Your ring is genuine. You look like a hero to me. You are a member of our House, and, as far as I know, a good one. Berel Sala must be mistaken about you spying for the Empire, as anyone who knows you as I do knows where your true loyalties lie. You are my choice for Hortator of House Redoran."
      • [If you have gained Athyn Sarethi's support in this matter.] "Athyn Sarethi has spoken of your good judgement, and I trust him. I will vote for you as Hortator of House Redoran."
      • [If you meet neither of the two above conditions, and Hlaren's disposition towards you is at least 80.] "That's a good story. And an impressive ring. You look like a hero. But you're an outsider, and I don't know if I can trust you. Especially when the honorable Berel Sala claims you are an Imperial spy. Let me talk to the others. I will consider what you have said, but that is all I can promise."
      • [Same scenario as the one above, but Hlaren's disposition towards you is lower than 80.] "I'm not interested in listening to a long story. I don't like long stories or Imperial spies."

In the event that Hlaren initially refuses to give you his vote for Hortator and you return to him after earning Athyn Sarethi's support, he will give you the same response as the one listed above. Note, however, that Hlaren cannot be persuaded to support you if you kill any of his fellow councilors:

  • Redoran Hortator
    • [If you killed one Redoran councilor.] "You killed a councilor, didn't you? And you think I'll make you Hortator? Get out of my manor before I call the guards."
    • [If you killed two Redoran councilors.] "You murdered a councilor, didn't you? And you think I'll make you Hortator? No. Never. Get out of my manor before I call the guards."

Under normal circumstances, you may speak with Hlaren again after he has agreed to give you his vote. If you do so before earning the support of all his fellow councilors, he says:

  • "Yes, I have agreed to name you the Redoran Hortator. What else can I do for you?"
  • Redoran Hortator
    • "You have my vote as Hortator of House Redoran, but the decision must be unanimous."

If you return to him after you have earned the support of all the Redoran councilors but before you have delivered this news to Athyn Sarethi, he says:

  • Redoran Hortator
    • "I hear the rest of the council has voted for you. Now we'll find out if you work as hard as you talk. See Athyn Sarethi. He'll give you the Ring of the Hortator which is traditionally worn by House Redoran war leaders."

And finally, if you speak with him after you have been officially named Hortator of House Redoran, he says:

  • "So, the Hortator returns. How goes the fight against the Sixth House?"
  • Redoran Hortator
    • "You are the Hortator of House Redoran now, %PCName. May the Tribunal guide your hand."

Taxes from Gnisis[edit]

If you wish to earn Hlaren Ramoran's support on the Redoran council, you will have to perform two tasks for him, the first one of which consists of gathering some taxes from Gnisis:

  • "So you want my support on the Council. Very well, I shall grant support to an outlander, if he can prove himself. First, I need someone to collect the taxes from Gnisis."
  • taxes from Gnisis
    • "My regular tax collector has fallen ill, but the duties are quite simple. Speak with Hetman Abelmawia and get the taxes from him. Then bring the taxes back to me."

Return to Hlaren after you have gathered the taxes from Gnisis to complete this quest. Be careful not to try and deceive him, however, as he will see through you and will permanently refuse to support you on the Redoran council:

  • "I asked you to collect the taxes from Gnisis."
  • taxes from Gnisis
    • "Do you have the taxes?"
    • Yes, 60 drakes.
      • [If you have at least 60 Gold in your inventory. Disposition +10. 60 Gold has been removed from your inventory.] "Good. The taxes are all here. I have one more request before I give you my support on the council, I would like for you to find an old aquaintance [sic] of mine, Nalvilie Saren."
      • [Else. Disposition -5.] "And I suppose you're keeping it somewhere safe? Bring the taxes to me."
    • Yes, 50 drakes.
      • [If you have at least 50 Gold in your inventory. Disposition -25. 50 Gold has been removed from your inventory.] "House Redoran values honesty. You have proven yourself to be as dishonest as the other outlanders. I will not give you my support on the council."
      • [Else. Disposition -25.] "Not only are you lying to me about how much taxes were due, you didn't even bring 50 drakes with you. House Redoran has no use for such as you."
    • No, not yet.
      • "Then why are you asking me about it? Get the taxes from Hetman Abelmawia in Gnisis and bring them back to me."

Mentioning this topic again after the completion of this quest elicits the following response:

  • taxes from Gnisis
    • [If you tried to keep 10 Gold for yourself.] "You have lied to me and I will not support you on the council."
    • [If you didn't try to keep any of the taxes for yourself.] "You have delivered the taxes, but you must also find out what happened to Nalvilie Saren."
    • [If you didn't try to keep any of the taxes for yourself and also finished his second favor.] "You have my support on the council."

Nalvilie Saren (Quest)[edit]

For his second favor, Hlaren wants you to seek out an old acquaintance of his:

  • "I have another favor to ask. In my youth, I was involved with a woman named Nalvilie Saren."
  • Nalvilie Saren
    • "Nalvilie Saren was an acquaintance of mine... I was quite fond of her and have often wondered what happened to her. I believe the Saren family lives in the Redoran Compound in Vivec. That may be a good place to start. When you find her, tell that I do not care what happened in the past and that I can support her. Invite her to meet with me here in Ald'ruhn."

There are two ways to successfully complete this quest. Firstly, you may do as Hlaren asks of you and seek out Nalvilie Saren, and return with news of either her rejection or her untimely death:

  • "Do you have word from Nalvilie Saren?"
  • Nalvilie Saren
    • [If Nalvilie Saren is still alive. Disposition +10.] "She refused to even see me? I feared she would be too proud to accept charity, but I didn't expect her to reject me again so soundly. Well, you did find her, and so I shall give you my support on the council."
    • [If Nalvilie Saren is dead.] "She is dead? I am saddened to hear this, but perhaps it is for the best. Well, you did what you could. I will give you my support on the council."

Alternatively, you may speak with a Dunmeri lady called Nalvyna Sarinith, who is standing right next to him in his manor, and learn of the feelings that she has for him. Mentioning her name to Hlaren proves that he feels the same way about her, though it will take some persuasion to have him actually act on these feelings, rather than ignoring them for the sake of what is "proper":

  • Nalvyna Sarinith
    • "She is an excellent warrior with an unblemished record who has served me faithfully for several years."
    • Tell him that Nalvyna cares for him.
      • "She... I... Hmm... I don't know what to say. Perhaps if I were younger... If it weren't so improper..."
      • Try to convince him.
        • [Disposition +10.] "True, I did not care so much for propriety when pursuing Nalvilie Saren. I will consider what you have said. Until then, forget about Nalvilie Saren. I will give you my support on the council."
      • Nevermind.
        • "Of course, it was just speculation. Just the harmless thoughts of an old man."
    • Nevermind.
      • "Yes, quite."

It is also possible to persuade him to get together with Nalvyna Sarinith if you first told him about Nalvilie Saren's decision (or her untimely death). In that case, he gives you the exact same response as those listed above, minus the Disposition increase that you would otherwise have gotten for successfully persuading him. Either way, Hlaren will agree to support you on the council, and you may talk to him about this topic again after the completion of this quest:

  • Nalvilie Saren
    • [If you convinced him to get together with Nalvyna Sarinith.] "Surprisingly, I haven't thought about her at all recently."
    • [Else.] "I will try and forget about her."
  • Nalvyna Sarinith
    • [If you convinced him to get together with her.] "Yes, I am in your debt for showing me who truly cares for me. I will give you my support on the council."

Mages Guild Monopoly[edit]

Once you have gained Athyn Sarethi's support on this matter, all that you need to do in order to gain Hlaren's support as well, is raise his disposition sufficiently high:

  • appeal to fairness
    • [If Disposition ≥ 40.] "Your words have convinced me. Though it is rare that I agree with a Telvanni proposal, I will agree to this."
    • [Else.] "Your words are unconvincing. Yes, you say this law is unfair, but how can I trust a Telvanni? If you show me that you yourself are honorable and fair I will listen to your words again."

Notes[edit]
