[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] Missing Painter
If you ask around town in Cheydinhal, people will tell you that Rythe has gone missing, and Tivela is very upset. Go to the Lythandas house on the south side of town, and talk to Tivela for more information. Tivela tells you that Rythe had locked himself in his study, as he often did. However, after not seeing him for several days, Tivela decided to investigate. Upon doing so, she discovers that Rythe has disappeared!
[edit] Find Rythe
Tivela gives you the key to Rythe's study. Open the door and take a look around. You should notice fairly quickly that one of the paintings is actually a door. Enter the painting. You soon arrive in a painted semblance of the great forest, and Rythe is standing near you. He reveals that a thief stole his magical paintbrush, which allows him to enter paintings to make them look more realistic. The thief created some painted trolls to guard him, but instead they killed him! Rythe needs the paintbrush off of the thief's body before either of you can escape. If you ask him about the painted trolls, he gives you six bottles of turpentine, which do a level dependent amount of damage (see chart below) to painted trolls when applied to your weapon.
[edit]
Retrieve the Brush
There are at least six painted trolls that tend to be hard to kill. Two applications of turpentine generally kill one painted troll, but depending on your level you may need up to four (see the table below.) Fire damage works as well on painted trolls as standard trolls. If you travel south and a bit west over the rocks from where you start, instead of following the path, you can evade most of the trolls. You will still have to kill the one or two trolls closest to the thief's corpse, but with six bottles of turpentine, this shouldn't be a problem.
[edit] Return to Tamriel
After looting the thief's corpse and returning the brush to Rythe, he paints a portal back to Tamriel. When you arrive, stick around, and listen to the conversation he has with his wife. Afterwards he'll give you the Apron of Adroitness, a light armor chest piece with a leveled agility and intelligence boost.
[edit] Turpentine Leveling
There seem to be several "sweet spots" for the best level to do this quest. Both the Trolls and the Turpentines are leveled, but the Turpentines only increase in damage every 4 levels, while the Trolls increase every level, so if you do the quest at either level 1 or a multiple of 4, you will do optimal damage with the Turpentine. Level 1 is clearly the best time to do this quest as seen from the chart below. Turpentines do not increase in damage after level 20 so it will only get harder after that. This chart does not take into account the damage from the weapon you use to deliver the poison, e.g. it is possible to kill a Troll with just 1 poisoned attack at level 1.
| Level | Health | Damage | # Needed | Level | Health | Damage | # Needed | Level | Health | Damage | # Needed | ||

[edit] Notes
- You can complete this quest early and come back at a later level to receive your reward. Simply exit the house while Rythe talks with his wife and delay talking to him and returning the key until later. The best reward is given at level 25 or higher.
- After completing the quest, the Lythandases may consider you to be trespassing. (Although, as you've just completed a quest for them, their disposition should be high enough for you just to yield to them).
- When you are considered trespassing after returning from the painting, Rythe may not talk to his wife. Talk to him for the reward.
- Because creatures chase you through doors, you can use painted trolls to your advantage. If you leave the painting with trolls in hot pursuit, they will enter the outside world after Rythe gives you your reward. Depending on the number of trolls and the level, they can kill a varying number of citizens to your advantage. Plan on returning to Rythe's house when the trolls are dispatched. Lead them into various guards and let them keep the trolls off you. At level 3, they can effectively engage town guards in combat. Keep this in mind to avoid letting loose too many trolls at absurdly high levels. As the guards kill off the trolls, you can get their painted troll fat that might otherwise have been beyond your ability to get in the painting. You can also loot the dead guards with no legal consequences. Early on, their armor and silver weapons are very welcome sales.
- Painted troll fat is very useful in potion making. This quest is the only place in Oblivion where you can get it (and it can not be duplicated in the Enchanted Chest). Therefore, you may want to kill as many painted trolls here as you can find.
- Oddly, the body when you find it is labeled as "Bosmer Thief", and Lythandas refers to him more than once as a Bosmer. But a closer inspection reveals that the body is actually that of an Altmer. It is an Altmer in the Construction Set as well. The name in the Construction Set is "Senannala," which sounds slightly more like an Altmer name than Bosmer, though Bosmer and Altmer names are often similar.
This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Oblivion Patch.
- Tivela and Rythe both carry Bralin's Key, which can be looted or pick-pocketed from them. This key opens the front door to the Lythandas' house.
- After you complete this quest, a special edition of the Black Horse Courier is published: "Greatest Painter Safe!".
- If you want to finish the quest quickly and only fight two trolls, you can bypass most of the Painted World. Head south from the entrance, which requires climbing over several rocks. You will encounter one troll before reaching the unpainted area, and a second one in the unpainted area near where you find the thief's body. Grab the brush from the corpse, and run back the way you came.
- The trolls are unable to climb or jump (although they can still scale slight inclines), rendering them incapable of attacking anything in an elevated position. You can take advantage of this by jumping onto a rock and using the respite offered to heal and attack the trolls.
- Running straight out from where you first enter this level will reveal a nook in the rocks that you can fit into, yet the trolls cannot. This makes this level extremely easy because you can run through the level attracting all of the trolls, and then simply stand in this nook and use ranged attacks to finish them off.
- There is something to do if you want to avoid all of the trolls. Jump on the rocks, and you will be able to make your own path to the bandit without fighting all of the trolls. Once you get on the rocks follow your arrow to the final destination, it's as simple as that.
[edit] Bugs
- Occasionally upon entering the painted world, Rythe does not converse with you about the thief and stolen paintbrush. The painted trolls are active, and one can kill them, but there is no thief or paintbrush to be found. In this case, save and re-load the game then approach Rythe. This should cause the quest to progress as usual.
- Alternatively, return to the spot where you first entered the painted world and wait a second or two. This should trigger the appropriate quest update and cause Rythe to speak to you.
- After returning the paintbrush to Rythe, sometimes the door he paints for you to return to Tamriel will not be visible or cannot be used. Workaround: Make sure you save the game immediately before returning the paintbrush, and if this glitch occurs, reload and try again.
Similar to the Where Spirits Have Lease portal problem, this may be caused due to using a console command or mod to change the default 30:1 timescale used by the game. Use the console command set timescale to 30to reset your timescale to default. After using the painting to return to the real world, feel free to change it back to your custom setting.
If this bug occurs and you don't have a save, use the console to enter the following commands:
- Another solution is to hit Rythe and then immediately yield. Don't worry, the crime will not be reported and there is no bounty since no guards are around to witness the crime. This does not affect Rythe's disposition towards you because it will be set to the max upon leaving the painting.
This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Oblivion Patch.
- If you kill Tivela before she has given you Rythe's Studio Key, you may never continue further in this quest. On the PC, you can get the key by using
player.additem 0001bc2c 1in the Console to gain access to the study. - Don't attack Rythe as he is busy forming the portal as the script only works once. If he fails to make the portal he will continue saying it's not the time to talk and so you will be stuck in The Painted World forever. Reloading from a previous save is needed.
[edit] Journal Entries
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Wherequestis the internal name of the quest, andstageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
