Alawen is a Bosmer archer who lives at Troll Candle Camp, south of the Gold Road between Anvil and Kvatch. She is the master trainer in Marksman.
Alawen is well aware of how dangerous living in the wilderness can be so she spends the majority of her time patrolling the camp. Unfortunately the dangers of the wilderness can sometimes catch up with even her as she has a bad habit of wandering off and getting herself killed by bandits and/or wildlife. She gets out of her tent early at 4am, and then patrols the campsite until 8pm, hunting deer for venison. She sits on the stool by her tent at 8pm to eat dinner until 10pm, when she crawls into her tent and sleeps.
[edit] Bugs
- Alawen's hunting often takes her too close to the unmarked bandit camp west of Dasek Moor, where she will meet an unintended death.
This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Oblivion Patch. It makes her essential until she first agrees to train the player.
[edit] Marksman Master Training
The two advanced trainers who can give you the master training reference necessary to start this quest are Pinarus Inventius and Reman Broder.
Before Alawen will provide training, she requires that you have one elven bow to receive training from her. Only an unenchanted elven bow will do, even though glass, ebony, and daedric are better quality. She is also a little picky regarding mathematics: make sure you have only one single elven bow when you speak with her (drop or leave any others you may have). Alawen will not take the bow, she just wants to make sure you're using "good equipment", which is quite ironic, considering she herself uses a silver bow.
Elven bows may be found on Bandit bowmen, Marauder archers and Skeletons at level 9. Goblin Warlords may also carry Elven bows. (25% chance). At level 13, Elven bows may be available from vendors.
This is the only quest in the entire game other than the Daedric quests that has a level requirement, since there are no Elven Bows anywhere in the game before level 9. While it is possible to "complete" the quest before then by having Alawen die, it is impossible to receive her training without reaching the required level.
[edit] Quest Stages
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Wherequestis the internal name of the quest, andstageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
