The Arena

The Arena is a large open-aired stadium in Imperial City, where gladiators fight to the death. [edit]

The Arena was first built by the Blademaster Gaiden Shinji in roughly 1E 490. Gaiden Shinji was a member of the fierce order of Diagna, a band of elite crusaders sworn to protect the Empire of Alessia. Tiber Septim later declared this Arena the official Arena of the Imperial City and had it restored to its former glory.

Sections

The Arena is divided into two parts, the Stadium and the Bloodworks. The Stadium is the main section where the fights take place. It is circle shaped and open aired. There are four gates through which combatants can enter the Arena, although only two lead to the bloodworks and only one of them can used by the player. In the center, there are four columns surrounding a large circular grating, through which blood can seep out of the Arena and into the Bloodworks. There are two seating boxes, one for the yellow team bettors, and one for the blue team bettors. There is also a main seating area, but it is inaccessible to the player. The second section is the Bloodworks, an underground training and recruitment area beneath the Arena. It is so named as blood from the Arena above often seeps down into the quarters. This is where you can meet a few of the combatants and can join the Arena. It is also the starting place for the miscellaneous quest Origin of the Gray Prince.

Betting

One option available at the Arena is to bet on a match. Talk to Hundolin, who stands out in front of the Arena every day from 9am to 9pm. He will allow you to place a bet of either 25, 50, or 100 gold on either the Blue Team or the Yellow Team. After betting on a team, you must go into the stands where you may witness the match and its outcome. If you win then you will receive twice the amount you bet from Hundolin after speaking to him.

The odds of either gladiator winning are basically 50/50: the two gladiators have the same level, and are randomly equipped from the same equipment lists. Invisible walls around the spectator area prevent you from interfering with the battle in any way.

There is one way in which the chances are skewed: your luck determines the health of the two gladiators. If your luck is 49 or less, the two gladiators will have equal health. Otherwise, the health of whichever combatant you bet upon will be increased according to the following table. The calculation is based upon your modified luck, taking into account any fortify, damage, or drain effects. Note that there are a couple of coding glitches: there is no health bonus if your luck is exactly 99; nor is there any health bonus if your luck is greater than 100.

People

Bloodworks

Entrance

  • Hundolin: The Gatekeeper at the Arena who collects the bets.

Creatures

  • Porkchop: A non-aggressive boar in the bloodworks cage who cannot be reached normally, but fights along your side in the arena fight against the Yellow Team Champion.

Notes

  • There are a few people who also bet on matches, coming to the Blue or Yellow Team boxes at certain times.
  • Located to the left of Owyn is a crumpled note.

Bugs

  • The Stadium contains four large pillars, however, when you are in the stands, they are not present.
  • If a player uses any type of Demoralize effect on an enemy yellow team combatant, the enemy combatant will flee. If the combatant is killed while fleeing, the player will get the message "Your killing has been observed by forces unknown..." and the Dark Brotherhood questline will be triggered. However, killing a combatant in this way does not count as a bounty-incurring murder.
  • Near the entrance to the Bloodworks there is a hole in the wall which allows your character to escape the Bloodworks. Be cautious, as jumping into the black space around the Bloodworks results in your character respawning in the nearest spot within the Bloodworks (i.e. jumping off near Porkchop's cage will result in your character respawning in the cage with no way out), so be sure to save first if you intend to attempt this.
