Oblivion:Ayleids
The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
Ayleids, also known as the Ancient Ones, Wild Elves, or Heartland High Elves, were the first race to establish an empire in Tamriel. They lived in a tribal society, with each "tribe" being substantially different from the next. They were the first inhabitants of the Imperial City and apparently spoke a variation of Old Cyrodiilic. Because they lived so long ago and their language is largely undecipherable, little else is known about them. Much like the lost Dwemer (whose ruins can be found in Hammerfell and Morrowind), many Ayleid ruins can be found in Cyrodiil. These ruins are filled with dangerous traps, monsters, bandits, and undead. Many would-be treasure hunters have died trying to plunder these lost ruins. The Ayleids seem to have had a firm grasp of the magical arts, as many of their ruins contain stones filled with magicka essences.
The Ayleids were the descendants of the Aldmeri that emigrated to Cyrodiil (from Summerset Isle).
White Gold Tower, the central spire of the Imperial City in Cyrodiil, was built by the Ayleids. It now serves as the Imperial palace for the Tamrielic Empire.
At one point the Ayleids controlled the entirety of the Imperial Province of Cyrodiil, and enslaved the Cyrodiilic and Nordic populations (which at that point were both part of the same prototypical race of men, the Nedes), but were later overthrown by the Slave-Queen Alessia and her people.
It is possible that some tribes of Ayleids may continue to live deep within the forests of Cyrodiil even to the current day. The most recent reported sightings are more than 1000 years ago (for example, The Wild Elves and 2920, Second Seed (v5)). These Ayleids, or Wild Elves, are at best a rarity and may not have actually survived into the third era.
There are at least 52 Ayleid ruins so far discovered in Cyrodiil, all of which are listed at Places. In addition, the 35 Ayleid Wells found in various locations (many near Ayleid Ruins) were built by the Ayleids.
