A farmer needs you to kill some bears to protect his sheep herd. edit

[edit] Quick Walkthrough

  1. Talk to Thorley about his bear problem.
  2. Thorley tells you to collect their West Weald Bear Fangs, and return them to him.
  3. Hunt down the bears and retrieve their fangs.
  4. Return to Thorley with the fangs to be rewarded with a combat skill book.

[edit] Detailed Walkthrough

[edit] Shardrock Farm

At the Shardrock farm you will meet the owner of the herd, Thorley Aethelred. He will tell you that bears have been attacking his herd, and the fence that he constructed has not worked.

[edit] Troublesome Bears

He then asks you to kill six leveled West Weald Bears and bring back their West Weald Bear Fang (one found on each bear's corpse). Go out, and hunt down these trouble-making bears, and retrieve their fangs. Depending on your level, these bears can be hardy animals with powerful blows. He rewards your efforts with a combat skill book.

[edit] Reward Table

You will be rewarded randomly with one of the six following skill books. The books are part of a leveled list, and each one has an equal chance of being given to you.

Book Skill
The Argonian Account, Book 1 Athletics
Battle of Sancre Tor Blade
History of the Fighters Guild Heavy Armor
Mace Etiquette Blunt
Master Zoaraym's Tale Hand to Hand
The Warp in the West Block

[edit] Notes

  • There are ten West Weald bears in the game, none of which respawn. Therefore, it is important to take the Bear Fangs off the bears as soon as you kill them; if you later need to collect the Bear Fangs the corpses may no longer be there, or it may be impossible to find them in the underbrush.
  • If you collect extra Bear Fangs, you can sell them (they are not considered to be quest items). Or they might make a nice addition to a display case in your home.
  • Thorley Aetherlred can be, and usually is, attacked by bears. It is wise to save frequently and stay by the farm during daylight hours to keep Thorley from being mauled and killed, thus ending the quest and all chances for a reward.
  • The reward skill books may be difficult to find any other way ("Mace Etiquette" and "Master Zoarym's Tale" in particular are only found in random loot), so you might want to save before claiming your prize so as to be sure of getting something you haven't already read.

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
