[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] Blood of the Damned
The mini-quest to get the next contract from Valtieri's is called "Blood of the Damned." Talk to Vicente to complete the mini-quest and learn that your new task is to go to the northern town of Bruma and slay a Wood Elf named Baenlin. It needs to look like an accident if you wish to receive a bonus reward. For the more direct Dark Brothers, sneaking into Baenlin's house and killing him and his manservant Gromm is very easy. However, doing so forfeits the bonus.
[edit] How to stage an "accident"
Vicente tells you that Baenlin likes to sit in his most comfortable chair every day between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. It just so happens that this chair sits right under a heavy mounted head of a Minotaur. The head is loosely attached to the wall by a set of ropes which you can reach via a crawlspace. The crawlspace is accessed from the bedroom at the south end of the house's second floor; the door is in the southeast corner next to the desk.
[edit] The assassination
Travel to Bruma. Baenlin lives in a house just north of the Eastern Gate. [map] Enter through the basement door at the rear of the house for remotely safe and indirect access. At 8:00 p.m. quickly sneak upstairs, get in the crawlspace, and loosen the straps. The mounted head will crash to the floor, killing Baenlin in the process.
[edit] Payoff
Sneak out and return to Valtieri in Cheydinhal for a level dependent gold reward (up to 600 gold) and the bonus Sufferthorn dagger. If Gromm survives, you can find him in Olav's Tap and Tack, weeping over his dead employer. Baenlin's house is now occupied by the smug, irritating, and killable nephew Caenlin, who was most likely the Brotherhood's client for the accident.
[edit] Notes
- None of the items sitting out in Baenlin's house are marked as private property, and will not be marked as stolen if you take them.
- If Gromm is dead for any reason, even before the quest is begun, you will not receive a bonus.
- After loosening the straps in the crawlspace, resist the urge to look through the hole; if you do, Gromm may see you.
- If your Sneak skill is insufficient for the task, you can buy invisibility potions from local vendors that will help you sneak about. You can also sneak into the crawlspace before 8pm and wait for Baenlin to sit. Gromm and Baenlin will not detect you while you are tucked away in the crawlspace.
- With well timed movement, good sneaking is not necessary. While Baenlin is in his chair, Gromm is sitting at a desk completely unaware. Use Detect Life to ensure you know where Gromm is at all times.
- If Gromm sees you, he gives you twenty seconds to leave. If you do not leave (or he sees you again) after that, he attacks you. He will chase you, even pursuing you after you leave town. If you escape but meet Gromm again later, he will again try to attack you. It is possible for Gromm to be killed by guards or other enemies if he is trying to chase you.
- An easy way to escape Baenlin's home without Gromm seeing you is to sneak from the crawlspace to the second floor balcony and jump over the railing. This will place you near to the basement door, from which you can escape.
- A locked (variable difficulty) jewelry box on a shelf on the second floor may contain a leveled random magic item.
- There is a Nirnroot in Baenlin's bedroom on the second floor.
- After you complete this quest, a special edition of the Black Horse Courier is published (but only if Gromm did not die): "Tragic Accident! Baenlin Dead!". If you break into the upper level of the Black Horse Courier building, even before you kill Baenlin, there will be a copy of this edition of the paper.
- This quest also provides a good opportunity to increase your sneak skill by walking around the crawlspace while in sneak mode.
- The crawlspace cannot be entered before this quest is started.
[edit] Journal Entries
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Wherequestis the internal name of the quest, andstageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
