[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] The Gates of Bruma
Jauffre wants you to help the Bruma guard in closing an Oblivion gate that has just opened near Bruma since you already did one at Kvatch. Find Captain Burd outside the gates of Bruma. You are to lead the charge into the gate in order to close it. Lead the guards in after a short inspiration speech from Burd. (Read Note 3)
[edit] Leading the Charge
The Oblivion area has nothing too much to note as it's mostly a winding, linear path to the tower. You may find a lone guard fighting Daedra along the way. You may enlist his help or order him to flee. There are various Daedra scattered about along with some loot and plants. Once you reach the Tower go inside and make your way to the top. The guards will likely be of good assistance to you providing you can keep them alive (Burd is flagged as essential so he will only go unconscious). They will charge an enemy as soon as it spots you or you attack it. Rest in safe areas to heal the guards as needed. They will also tend to get in the way of your attacks but don't seem to mind being hit a time or two (Warning: If you hit them a third time, they WILL turn on you. Simply yield to them and they should stop attacking).
[edit] Assaulting the Sigillum Sanguis
Near the top of the Tower you will encounter a Dremora Sigil Keeper (he is not any tougher than the Daedra that you have already encountered). Loot the Sigil Key from him. This will let you into the Sigillum Sanguis area where you can disable it like you did in Kvatch (or you can just pick the lock). Be warned that there is a small concentration of Daedra guarding the Sigil Stone. Note that if you brought Burd into the gate with you, he must be present in the Sigillum Sanguis for you to remove the stone (no leaving him behind).
[edit] Back to Bruma
Once the gate has been closed and you are back in Bruma, talk to Captain Burd again. He says that he thinks he can handle any more gates that are opened around Bruma. Return with the news of your success to Jauffre. Speak to Jauffre for an optional sidequest (Allies for Bruma), or speak to Martin to continue on the main quest line.
[edit] Notes
- You can enter the gate without Burd and his men. As soon as you get to the top of the Sigillum Sanguis and attempt to take the Sigil Stone it will notify you to show Burd how to do this. Go down the stairs within the same chamber and he will appear and your journal will be updated. Proceed through the rest of the mission as usual.
- The Dremora "Sigil Keeper" that you encounter in the Sigillum Sanguis always carries a dremora claymore (sometimes enchanted). If you do not already have a silver, daedric, or enchanted weapon, you may want to keep this claymore to help on the next quest, Blood of the Divines. Dremora weapons can be used to attack creatures that are immune to normal weapon damage, such as the ethereal undead that inhabit Sancre Tor.
- Entering the Oblivion Gate from the back (the side not facing where Captain Burd is initially waiting for you), causes a glitch where Captain Burd will not follow you into the gate. To solve this, just hit Burd until he attacks you, run to the Sigil stone, and then yield to him.
- In this quest (as with all gate-closing quests) wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal will not cause the guards to attack you, unless you are still wearing it when you return to Cyrodiil.
- If you are on bad terms with the guards, the guards who accompany you into the gate will very likely attack you on sight once you finish the mission and no longer have need of you. (Presuming they survive that far)
- It is possible for Burd to fall into the column of fire in the middle of the tower. Because the fire causes continuous damage, Burd becomes permanently unconscious; it is impossible to get him to the Sigillum Sanguis. If this occurs you will need to reload from an earlier save. PC users can also use the console command
CloseCurrentOblivionGate. - After you close the Oblivion Gate, Burd may flee, so it's a good idea to save before closing the gate.[verification needed -- One user has reported this; I've left it here on a "better safe than sorry" basis for now.]
[edit] Journal Entries
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Wherequestis the internal name of the quest, andstageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
