Earana strolling around Chorrol

Earana is a High Elf mage who was expelled from the Mages Guild years ago. Recently, she showed up in Chorrol and booked herself a room at The Grey Mare, much to the annoyance of local guild head Teekeeus. Apparently, there has been a long-standing feud between the two, dating back to the time when they were both affiliates of the Arcane University. As a result, Teekeeus would like to know exactly what Earana is doing in town; so much, in fact, that he will hand you a recommendation to find out. Earana, on the other hand, has her own agenda and a special task for you that might involve going behind Teekeeus' back...

Her room is located on the second floor of The Grey Mare, second door on the left, and she will sleep there every night between midnight and 8am. After waking up, she heads up to the plaza surrounding The Great Oak, which happens to be the address of the Chorrol Mages Guild. Here, she will wander around all day, seemingly taunting Teekeeus with her presence, while chatting to the other citizens. She only breaks off at 1pm to enjoy a three-hour dinner back at the inn.

The exception to this routine happens during the related quest but only if you decide to deliver Fingers of the Mountain to her first. As soon as you hand it over, she will head back to her room at the inn and place the book in her locked chest. Once the book is secured, she will stay in her room for the rest of the day until she heads to bed at midnight. Starting at 8am the next morning, she will wander around The Great Oak as usual but will skip her lunch, eagerly awaiting to tell you of her discoveries. During this stage, she will only return to the inn to sleep between midnight and 8am. As soon as you have spoken with her, she will return to her regular schedule.

Her wardrobe is pure upper class: a green brocade doublet along with a green silk garment and a pair of green velvet shoes to match. She carries nothing but a considerable sum of gold. She knows a high leveled set of mage spells from all schools of magic.

Related Quests[edit]

Dialogue[edit]

When you meet her for the first time, before starting the related quest, if her Disposition is below 30 or your health is below 150 she will dismiss you with the following:

"Begone, weakling. I have no use for you."
"You're a bold little thing, aren't you? I'm afraid you're of no use to me. Goodbye."

If you have higher health and disposition, you can ask her about the Mages Guild:

"Hrmph. Think they're all so high and mighty, that they've somehow got a monopoly on power."

Quest-related Dialogue[edit]

Fingers of the Mountain[edit]

Once you've been dispatched by Teekeeus to gather information on her as part of the related quest, she will show more interest:

"Ah, yes. You are a Guild Mage, are you not? Yet, different from the others. Yes, yes -- this is good. There's a small matter with which you may be able to assist. It's nothing worth involving your guild in, I assure you. Best if kept just between us, yes? So, what say you?"
No thank you.
"Hrmph. Very well. Good day."
Yes, I'm interested.
"Excellent. It's a simple task, really - all you need to do is fetch a book for me. The book is entitled "Fingers of the Mountain" -- it is of no use to you; you won't be able to read it. I, however, can, and would very much like to. You'll find it at an old ruin called Cloud Top. It's north of Chorrol, up in the mountains. I'm afraid I don't have an exact location. Return it to me immediately when you have it. Make no mention of it to Teekeeus or anyone else in your guild. I will make it well worth your effort."

She will then take her leave by saying:

"Remember, not a word to Teekeeus!"

If you initially rejected her offer, she will greet you with:

"You again. Have you reconsidered? The offer still stands. Say the word, and I'll tell you all about it."

Once she's pointed you to Cloud Top, she will patronizingly greet you with:

"Be a dear, and fetch me that book like I asked. Hurry along now."

Approaching her further will net you:

"I'm waiting for that book."

Once you have the book in your possession, she will instead say:

"Well, if it isn't my little helper. Have you retrieved that book for me yet?"
I don't have it.
"Then why are we speaking? We have nothing to discuss unless you bring me that book. Now go away." (Disposition falls by 5)
Here's the book.
"Ah, wonderful! I'll just take this from you, and get to work translating it. I'll need some time with this; come and find me tomorrow. I'll be here until I've finished my work. But please don't disturb me until I'm done; this is quite a delicate business, you see."

She will take her leave by saying:

"I shall have your reward soon."

Fingers of the Mountain, Part II[edit]

If you already delivered the book to Teekeeus, she will greet you with:

"I grow weary of waiting. Where is my book?"
I gave the book to Teekeeus.
"WHAT? You gave HIM the book? What were you thinking? And here I thought one of you Guild mages might actually have a brain... All right, all right. We can deal with this. You'll have to get it back, that's all. You're in the guild, aren't you? You should be able to walk right in, find it, and take it. And if you can't, then break in. I want that book. Bring it to me once you have it. I'll even still give you the reward I promised, despite your incompetence. Now go!"
No, I won't do that.
"Is that so? Bah. I was a fool to have trusted you in the first place. Get out of my sight."
I'll go get it.
"Of course you will. Do whatever you must; I require that book as soon as possible."

If you refuse to steal the book, she will also refuse to speak to you further:

"I'll not have anything to do with you. Begone."
"Bah. Get out of my sight."

Once you've agreed to steal the book back, she will impatiently ask you:

"Any progress yet? You should be working on getting the book for me. You don't want to fail me again."
Fingers of the Mountain:
"I believe I've made myself more than clear. I want that book, and I expect you to clean up this little mess you've made."

Once you have the book in your possession again she will be exasperated:

"Back again, are you? Do you have the book THIS time?"

After delivering the book, she sets off for the Grey Mare and will snap:

"I must put this book in a safe place. I have no time to talk now."

If you interrupt her during the next 24 hours while she is working on the text, she will dismiss you:

"Can't you see I'm busy? Without the translation, this book is useless. Now go away and let me work."

Once the translation is complete she will be more forthcoming:

"Hello, my little friend. I have something that might interest you... I've committed most of the book to memory, but I took the time to write down a passage you might find useful. It contains instructions for acquiring a very special power. You'll want to read it carefully, and then return to Cloud Top. I consider this to be more than a worthy reward for your help; I believe you'll agree... assuming you're careful."

After this she will refuse to speak to you further, saying only:

"I've already given you everything you need. Unless I'm mistaken, we have little more to say to one another."

Rumors[edit]

If you already completed the Anvil Recommendation quest, male citizens of Chorrol can be heard commenting:

"I saw that Earana woman hanging around the Mages Guild again"

As expected, the reasons behind all the hatred between Earana and Teekeeus intrigues most of the residents at the local guildhall.

Alberic Litte: "She's nothing but trouble. She went to the University long ago, but was expelled from the guild. Caused all kinds of trouble while she was there. I think Teekeeus was the one who finally blew the whistle on her. That'd be just like him too; always playing by the rules."
Angalmo: "I passed her the other day. You wouldn't believe the look she gave me! Whatever happened, she's taking it out on the whole guild."
Athragar: "I don't know all the details, but I heard that she complained to the Council until they removed Teekeeus from his position at the Arcane University."
Contumeliorus Florius: "I'd steer clear of her if I were you. She has it in for Teekeeus, and wouldn't hesitate to take any of us down with him."

If you ask Teekeeus, he will tell you:

"She and I have an unpleasant history. She does not care for Guild regulations, and errantly believes I am mis-using my powers. I have seen that she is in town. Though she has not approached me, I know she wants something. I would like you to find out what it is. Determine what she's after, and how we may be rid of her. I do not want her here, spreading her lies."

The townfolk can also be heard discussing Earana's activities:

"Do you know anything about some book that Earana is looking for?"

Asking them for help in locating her will net you the following replies, depending on whether you ask a female or male resident:

"All I heard is that she's looking for some sort of book. You'll have to talk to her if you want to know more."
"Haven't you seen her around town? She's either at the Grey Mare, or she's skulking around the Mages Guild, it seems."

Indeed, Emfrid will confirm she's staying at her inn:

"She's staying in one of the rooms upstairs, though she seems to spend most of her time down by the Mages Guild. I don't know what her problem is, and I don't care. Her money's good, and that's all I need to know."

Once you've given Teekeeus the book, he will be more magnanimous:

"She was unable to acquire the book, and that shall be enough for me. It would be beneath me to continue this petty squabble."

Notes[edit]

  • If you choose to give the book to Teekeeus, only to steal it from his chest afterwards and then deliver it to Earana, she will keep it in her inventory indefinitely.
  • If you are expelled from the Mages Guild during the Fingers of the Mountain quest, she will talk to you as though you've never met.
  • Earana can be heard having a default conversation with other Chorrol citizens about joining the Mages Guild. You may occasionally hear someone ask her: "Ever thought about joining the Mages Guild?", to which she will respond negatively, even though she used to be a Mages Guild member herself.

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • Earana has an unused greeting line through which she would have enlisted you to work for her before speaking to Teekeeus, which is not possible: "Hello there. Hmm... you might do nicely. Are you interested in some work? I have a small task that needs accomplishing. You may be up to it."
  • She has another unused line if you claimed to have the book but didn't have it in your inventory: "Either you're lying to me, or your feeble little mind has forgotten that you put it down someplace. I'm not amused. Go get the book.". You will never hear it as the book is a quest item.
  • She also has four lines for the Fingers of the Mountain topic which you will never hear due to a combination of other greeting lines forcing you to immediately exit conversation and incorrect conditions:
    • "It's a very old text, written in a language I'm sure you wouldn't understand. Don't worry about it -- just bring me the book." (After speaking to her about her offer)
    • "Do you have it THIS time? Or did you decide to give it to another of my sworn enemies?" (Once you retrieve the book during Fingers of the Mountain II)
    • "I need more time to work on the translation. The more you bother me, the longer it's going to take." (If 24 hours haven't elapsed after giving her the book)
    • "As I've said, the only notes I've taken, I have given to you. The rest is only of interest to me, I assure you. Oh, and do be careful with what I've given you. It's very valuable, but... well, slightly dangerous. You'll see what I mean." (After receiving her notes)
  • Earana also has an unused line for the Teekeeus topic: "Make no mention of the book to him. It's just the sort of thing he'd want to get his scaly little hands on." However, you will never be able to hear it as her greeting will always end the conversation.
  • Teekeeus has two unused lines for the Earana topic. The first was meant to be heard if you agreed to retrieve the book for her before speaking to Teekeeus, which is not possible. The second was meant to be heard if you were not in the Guild. However, the topic only became available when overhearing rumors from Chorrol citizens, which require completing the Anvil Recommendation quest. Thus you would need to be expelled from the Guild to satisfy the condition, but in this case Teekeeus will simply direct you to Raminus Polus and exit conversation.
    • "I understand you have spoken with her. As you are new to the guild, I will not hold this against you, but I warn you to be wary of her. She deals in half-truths at best, outright lies at worse. If you have any information about her, or about her intentions, I expect you to inform me."
    • "She is a scavenger, and has no respect for the power of the Arcane arts. She has no business here, and I will not aid her in any way. I highly suggest that you make no effort to associate with her."

Bugs[edit]

  • After you have given her the book, Earana will remark that "I'll be here until I've finished my work." regardless of her location.
    • PC Only The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.5.3, addresses this issue. A previously unused dialogue line that says "I'll be at the Grey Mare until I've finished my work." is used instead
  • After completing this quest, you may hear rumors from other Chorrol citizens stating "I saw Earana leaving town. She looked very excited.". This is untrue as she can still be found either at the Grey Mare or near the Great Oak.
  • If you had initially given the book to Teekeeus and been expelled from the Guild in the meantime, Earana should have greeted the news with:
"You did WHAT? Are you out of your mind? Did I not make it clear that Teekeeus was the one person I NEVER wanted to acquire that book? I can't believe you could be so stupid... All right. No need to get angry, I suppose. It's a small problem, but one that you can resolve. You'll just have to get the book back, that's all. Whatever it takes, yes? If you need to break in and steal it, that's what you'll do. At least, you will if you want your reward. Now get moving!"
Instead, speaking to her will result in a completely blank screen with no dialogue options ?
