The Gray Fox in person

The Gray Fox is the mysterious leader of the secretive Thieves Guild. Most doubt his existence, and rumors have it that he has existed for over 300 years, is able to vanish into thin air, and can turn into a mist to slip underneath locked doors. The identity of the Gray Fox is bestowed upon any person who wears the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, which was stolen from Nocturnal over three hundred years ago by Emer Dareloth (the first Gray Fox). The cowl has since been passed down to subsequent Guild Masters, including Corvus Umbranox and the player (if the player completes the Thieves Guild quest line). The cowl is accompanied by a curse that strikes the wearer from history, thus preventing the original identity of the Gray Fox from being remembered. This curse is lifted by Corvus Umbranox at the end of the Thieves Guild quest line.

[edit] Notes

  • His dialog is notable for the fact that he says, "Capital!" frequently, when expressing excitement or satisfaction.
Imperial City poster.
  • The Gray Fox's face may be revealed the first time he is met in person by reverse-pickpocketing a hood into his inventory. He will eventually replace the cowl with this hood, thereby exposing his face. If the player has encountered The Gray Fox's alternate persona, the character may be recognized; however, he is still named "The Gray Fox" until the questline exposes his identity.
