[edit] Detailed Walkthrough

[edit] Check

Once again, speak with Modryn Oreyn at his house in Chorrol. Blackwood has spun entirely out of control and the last move must be made to stop their chaotic vigilantism. Modryn says you must go back to the Blackwood Company Hall in Leyawiin, find Ri'Zakar and the source and show them the true meaning of justice. You must be careful, however, for Blackwood now knows your position and given the last turn of events, there's no telling what sort of greeting they might have waiting.

[edit] Mate

Travel to Leyawiin and enter the 'Blackwood Company Hall'. Immediately Ja'Fazir will approach you and call you a traitor after which all the Blackwood Company members in the room will begin attacking you (although one seems to stay on the second floor until you make your way up). Rana has a leveled staff, and may possibly damage other Blackwood Company members with the staff if they are in her line of fire. Take them all out and loot what you will; all have great items and Geel carries a superb collection of enchanted arrows. After the bloodshed has ceased, check Ja'Fazir's body for the key to Jeetum-Ze's room on the second floor. Jeetum-Ze should be in his room but has been known to only spawn after you enter then exit his room. Regardless, once you find him, appropriately deal with him and search his body for the key to the Blackwood leader Ri'Zakar's room on the third floor. Head on up to find Ri'Zakar seemingly in wait for you, let him speak his short piece or cut him off mid-sentence, literally. Once you have toppled the Blackwood ladder, search Ri'Zakar's body to find the Blackwood Co. Basement Key. The basement door is on the first floor near the steps, head on down there and make your way into the basement.

[edit] We Don't Need No Water

The room is a mechanized monster, with the Hist Tree in the middle connected to multiple pumping machines and run by a rotted screaming furnace. Two more members (Sings-Like-Thunder and Hears-Voices-In-The-Air) are down here tending to the beast, finalize the history of Blackwood's regime and leave them cold. Once they are out of the way you must find a method to stop the infernal machine from pumping its bloodlust elixir.

To stop the machine, pick up the two pipes that are lying on or near the table by the furnace, they will be added to your inventory automatically. Once they are in your inventory, activate one and then the other Sap Pump on each side of the tree. This should destroy both of them and you will get a message saying the tree has been destroyed.

Exit the basement only to be surprised by your old friend Maglir, who is quite upset at you; he will rant about how you "ruined everything" and then attack. Once you have defeated him, make the long journey back to Chorrol and visit Modryn Oreyn again.

[edit] Glorious Return

Modryn is beyond pleased at your news and says he plans to retire and work on some hobbies. He gives you the Helm of Oreyn Bearclaw as a reward, which boasts a fortify Agility and Endurance 10 points and can take a ridiculous beating before needing to be repaired. Modryn also suggests you speak with Vilena Donton about what has happened. Head over to the Fighters Guild and find Vilena. She is most displeased that you have taken it upon yourself in plotting with the expelled Modryn Oreyn against Blackwood, so she strips you of your Champion Rank. However, words cannot express how happy she is at the fall of Blackwood, and the courage you displayed in taking them on. Therefore she promotes you to the Fighters Guild Master and suggests you name Modryn to be your second-in-command. Be sure to check out her third floor bedroom in her house across the street, where you find a Nirnroot and The Legendary Sancre Tor (a Blunt skill book) on her bookshelf. Head back to Modryn's house and ask him for his services, although he has become nothing shy of a savant painter in this short time, he will happily agree like only Modryn knows how to.

[edit] Master of the Guild

At this point, the Fighters Guild quest line is officially finished. However, as master of the guild you get to determine the guild's overall priorities. Your choice will affect the reward that gets placed in the "Guildmaster's Chest" (on the top floor of the Chorrol guildhall) each month. At any point you can talk to Modryn to change the guild's current priorities. Your choice will remain in effect until you tell Modryn otherwise. The choices are:

  • Focus on recruitment: Your monthly gold is one half of the standard amount. However, you have a better chance of receiving random loot (10% chance 3 items, 10% chance 2 items, 11% chance 1 item; 69% chance no items).
  • Focus on getting contracts: Your monthly gold is double the standard amount. But you only have a 11% chance of receiving a single item of random loot (89% chance no items).
  • Focus on both equally: Your monthly gold is the standard amount. You have a 21% chance of receiving a single item of random loot (79% chance no items).

The standard monthly gold is a randomly determined amount from 0 to 990 gold; it is not influenced by your character's level. The random loot is generated from a special leveled list. An item has equal chances of being any one of the following seven types of items: an enchanted bow, enchanted armor, an enchanted blade weapon, an enchanted blunt weapon, enchanted arrows, enchanted jewelry, or potions. Within each category, the specific item is randomly determined using the same leveled lists used to place loot in dungeons or equip NPCs. See Generic Magic Weapons and Generic Magic Apparel for more details on what types of items are included.

[edit] Notes

Modryn's painting
Modryn's painting
  • If you enter the Blackwood Company Hall and leave without killing any of the members, the door may lock behind you and you may not be able to get back in. You should be able to get back in eventually, but it is easier to just avoid going in until you are ready to fight.
  • There are nirnroot plants in both rooms on the first floor in the Blackwood Company Hall.
  • When you ask Modryn to be second-in-command, he says "I was just getting used to being retired. You can see how good my painting is getting." In the back of his house you can see an example of one of his paintings.
  • If you sneak into the Blackwood Company, and simply avoid Ja'Fazir for awhile (the one who approaches you to say you are a traitor), or initiate conversation before he does, you can pick his pocket and get the first key. After he loses interest in following your shadow, he stops. You can pickpocket all keys needed without fighting. You may even sneak around the 2 tree-keepers in the Hist room. It is not murder if you sneak-kill them however, and no bounty is recorded. Maglir sees you when you exit the Hist room, and he is unavoidable, in sneak-mode or not. If you walk outside with him in town, the city guards kill him. Sneak skill was only fortified to 100 to complete this problem-free.
  • After Ja'Fazir has accused you of being a traitor and attacked you, it is possible for you to successfully request him to yield. He will then stand and watch as you dispatch the other Blackwood members who attack you. The other members will not yield to you. This approach can be handy if you don't fancy having to fight 3 people simultaneously as you can dispatch the other two Blackwood members before turning your attention to Ja'Fazir.
  • If you are chameleon 100% it is possible to avoid the fight with Maglir, too. Re-enter in the Hist room immediately after Maglir has spoken, end exit. He will not see you this time.
  • The door to the 'Blackwood Company Basement' is not the same one Jeetum-Ze took you through earlier to drink the Hist sap. It's to the left of the staircase rather than behind it and to the right.
  • If Ri'Zakar is too strong for you just lead him outside on a merry little chase through the town. The guards may take a bit of time taking him down but they will defeat him eventually.
  • You do not have to kill Maglir. If you are fast enough, you can run into the street before he can speak to you.

[edit] Bugs

  • If you kill Maglir before he has a chance to start attacking you, it will count as murder and you will be expelled from the Fighters Guild. Assuming this isn't your third expulsion from the guild, you will have to complete the reentry requirements (collect 20 bear pelts or 20 minotaur horns) before you can finish this quest.
  • Sometimes Ri'Zakar may not attack you leaving you with the option to steal the key or kill him (this counts as murder).
  • You can also walk in and back out and upon returning. No one will attack you until you get in the basement. It's as easy as stealing a couple of keys.
  • Sometimes even if you let Maglir attack you before you kill him, you may get expelled. Instead of attacking him, run outside of the Blackwood Company Hall, then keep running until a guard sees Maglir. Then the guard will attack, and eventually kill him. After that you can proceed to finish your quest without the problem of expulsion from the Fighter's Guild.
  • Occasionally, Maglir has been known not to appear after exiting the basement, preventing the quest from updating. [verification needed -- See discussion.]
    • PC Note Bring up the console and type prid 2AE31 followed by moveto player.

[edit] Journal Entries

The Hist (FGD09Hist)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 Modryn Oreyn has decided that the threat of the Blackwood Company must be ended. He wants me to travel to their headquarters and destroy the Hist Tree. It will be behind a locked door, and it is likely that only Ri'Zakar himself has a key.
20 I have killed Ri'Zakar. I should get the basement key from his corpse.
25 I've gotten the key to get into the basement, where the Hist Tree is located.
30 The tree has become a perversion of nature. It is surrounded by alien machinery. If I am to destroy this monstrosity, I will need to find a way to destroy the machinery that surrounds it.
40 I have destroyed the machinery surrounding the Hist Tree, and the tree was destroyed in the process. I should return to Oreyn.
50 Oreyn believes our work is now finished. He has given me the Helm of Oreyn Bearclaw as a symbol of our friendship. He suggests I speak with Vilena Donton and tell her all that has transpired.
90 Vilena Donton was astounded by the events I recounted, and she now realizes that her unwillingness to act could have caused the demise of the Fighters Guild. She has promoted me to Master of the Guild.
95 Vilena Donton suggests that one of my first actions should be to reinstate Modryn Oreyn as my second-in-command, if he will accept the post.
100 0Yes I have asked Modryn Oreyn to act as my second-in-command. He accepted, and will run day-to-day activities of the Fighters Guild in my absence.
Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
