Lucien Lachance is a Speaker of the Black Hand, the core governing body of the Dark Brotherhood. He is the first contact and recruiter for the player into the Dark Brotherhood. For much of the player's membership in the Dark Brotherhood, he is the Speaker overseeing the player. His only formal residence is Fort Farragut, which is located east of Cheydinhal.
After committing a cold-blooded murder, Lucien Lachance appears to the player the next time he or she sleeps at a safe and secure location. He gives the player the first Dark Brotherhood quest, A Knife in the Dark. Note that when Lucien appears to the player for the first time it is possible to kill him and end all Dark Brotherhood quests. Following the completion of the quest, he will visit again during the player's next sleep to instruct the player on how to locate and enter the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Cheydinhal.
After completion of A Knife in the Dark, the player does not receive further contact from Lucien until the quest The Purification starts, during which Lucien promotes the player to the rank of Silencer. After "The Purification", the player receives instructions from him in the form of Dead Drop Orders for two more Dark Brotherhood quests: Affairs of a Wizard and Next of Kin, after which the Dead Drops are intercepted.
The player resumes contact with Lucien at the completion of A Kiss Before Dying. At that time, Lucien informs the player that they have been deceived. He then gives the player the quest Following a Lead. During this quest, other Speakers of the Black Hand murder Lucien after being led to think that he has deceived them. During this quest, Lucien's mutilated and stripped corpse can be seen in Applewatch and it remains there afterwards.
He does not offer any services.

[edit] Notes
- In the game, it is stated that Lucien is a Speaker of the Black Hand. However, in the construction set, Lucien is only listed as a Murderer in the Dark Brotherhood. The information listed in the summary box is the construction set faction, because this is the information that controls the NPC's disposition, dialogues, and responses to scripts; see Factions for details.
- There are actually two different versions of Lucien. Up until the final Dark Brotherhood quest you interact with the character internally identified as "LucienLachance" (RefID
0002FD77, FormID000224ED). In the final quest he is replaced by "LucienLachanceHunted (RefID000034B0, BaseID000034AF). The two characters have different statistics and different scripting. - "Lachance" literally means "The Luck" in French. "Lucien" is also a common French name. These would tend to imply that he is a Breton, as Bretons most commonly have French names. However, despite his name, he is Imperial. It's possible that either his race or name was changed for some reason, leaving a minor inconsistency.
- He is voiced by Wes Johnson
[edit] Bugs
- If you initiate the first Dark Brotherhood quest in the Shivering Isles, Lucien Lachance will be subject to the "I HAVE NO GREETING" glitch. The console command
setstage 000224EB 10will allow you to continue the quest as normal.
-
This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.
