Martin Septim in Cloud Ruler Temple
Brother Martin is the illegitimate son of Emperor Uriel Septim VII. After the emperor's death, Martin is the only remaining member of the Septim bloodline. Though he regrettably experimented with Daedra worship in his youth, at the beginning of the game he is a priest in Kvatch.
It is likely that Martin had previously worshipped Sanguine, given his comment if given Sanguine Rose during the quest Blood of the Daedra:
- I never thought to see this again. I once possessed it, briefly ... a lifetime ago, it seems now ...
His further comments point to some disaster that befell him and his friends, presumably with the power of the Sanguine Rose:
- As a young man, I grew impatient with Mages Guild restrictions, as did many of my fellow apprentices. We threw ourselves into the riddles of daedric magic. We hungered for forbidden secrets. Knowledge and power were our gods. You can guess the rest. We got in over our heads. People died. My friends died. I've put those days behind me. But the bitter wisdom that one has been a fool is not without value.
[edit] Notes
- Not only is Martin one of the few NPCs to have a birthsign, he actually has the bonuses from four different birthsigns (presumably in order to make him unusually powerful):
- In addition, he is normally wearing either the Emperor's Robe or the Emperor's Cuirass, both of which provide: 50% Reflect Damage, 50% Reflect Spell, and 50 points Fortify Health.
- He knows several spells: Fortify Luck, one leveled Restore Health spell, one leveled Shock Shield spell, and three leveled Frost Damage spells (touch, target, and area effect versions).
- Martin was voiced by Sean Bean in Oblivion.
- Martin can be a useful follower if you choose to delay completing the Weynon Priory quest, and can help you complete a large number of other quests. He is an essential character and he is well equipped to battle both living and undead enemies. However, later in the main quest line when he follows you (e.g., Light the Dragonfires) he is no longer essential and his death will end the game, therefore he is much less useful as a follower.
