Mythic Dawn

[edit] Joining the Faction

During the Dagon Shrine quest if you pretend to be an initiate (and give all of your equipment to Harrow), you will be given your own Mythic Dawn robe and you will find that you are now an Initiate in the Mythic Dawn.

If you continue to play along you will be taken to the main shrine, introduced as a new member, and asked to make a sacrifice to show your devotion to Mehrunes Dagon. If you pick up the silver dagger on the altar and kill the Argonian prisoner by the statue you will be promoted to Acolyte. At this stage you will have the Mythic Dawn appearing briefly in your in-game faction list.

Other than that, this faction goes nowhere. Continuing on with the quest (or leaving Lake Arrius Caverns at all) requires that you take the Mysterium Xarxes. At that point everyone present tries to kill you, and you are kicked back out of the Mythic Dawn. There are no other quests that relate to you being a member of the Mythic Dawn.

The sleeper agents generally have unique dialogue, and have new dialogue for city-specific topics, e.g. Else God-Hater has new dialogue about Glarthir.

[edit] Members

For information on the Mythic Dawn classes, see NPC Classes.

Not all members of the Mythic Dawn stay at the secret shrine in the Lake Arrius Caverns. Some are posing as regular townsfolk. This is not an issue until your identity is revealed to the Mythic Dawn after your theft of the Mysterium Xarxes during the Dagon Shrine quest. After this, Mythic Dawn agents will attack on sight until Light the Dragonfires (at the end of the Main Quest) is finished.

Usually, your only warning will be when they scream, "For Lord Dagon!", before they summon their Daedric armor. The agents will attack regardless of other townsfolk or guardsmen around, and may kill townsfolk or guards in order to attack you.

The Mythic Dawn agents attack due to a 100 point faction-wide decrease in disposition when you steal the Mysterium Xarxes. If an agent already had a 100 disposition toward you, it will not drop below 1, and they can still be engaged in conversation normally. Otherwise, using a combination of Charm, Speechcraft, and/or 100% Chameleon, you can raise an agent's disposition to the point where they will not attack you. Conversely, by deliberately lowering their disposition you can incite these agents to attack you well before stealing the Mysterium Xarxes. At the end of the Light the Dragonfires quest, the disposition drop is reversed. Therefore, any Mythic Dawn Agents who survive the Main Quest will no longer be hostile.

You may also encounter trouble with one before the Dagon Shrine quest. If you are, for example, traveling to Cloud Ruler Temple with Martin and Jauffre on the Weynon Priory Quest and you enter a town where a Mythic Dawn sleeper agent is walking around, Martin and Jauffre may attack and kill the agent.

If you opt to burgle their houses, you may get preemptive warning (if you didn't know they were agents already) by discovering Mythic Dawn paraphernalia in their house, such as a Mythic Dawn robe or one of the "Mythic Dawn Commentaries" volumes.

It is also possible to discover the identity of Mythic Dawn agents by leaving Lake Arrius Caverns immediately after talking to the door guard (before talking to Harrow). If a townsperson is an agent, he or she will say, "Greet the new day, brother/sister," as you approach, but will still have the same dialogue options as normal.

These people tend to be great people to murder and/or use their house for storage. Some agents, such as Hans Black-Nail in Bravil's castle, carry important keys that you may loot without worrying about murder (no more high-level locks in castles to worry about).

The following table provides a full list of of Mythic Dawn agents. Unless stated otherwise, the agents are sleeper agents.

[edit] Beliefs and Practices

The Mythic Dawn follow the four volumes of Mankar Camoran's Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes. Hidden clues within the texts lead to the Shrine of Dagon. Those who manage to get their hands on copies of each volume and decipher the hidden message find themselves with a clear map to the location of the shrine. Finding the shrine is the first test of becoming a member; only those who find the shrine themselves can go through initiation. Once the initiate is brought into the main altar area, they are called up and told to sate Lord Dagon's thirst for the "red drink". This is a simple ceremonial name for blood. To prove their loyalty to Lord Dagon, the initiate must make a sacrifice with a ceremonial dagger located next to their holy book: The Mysterium Xarxes. Once this is done, you are a brother.

Mankar Camoran, the author of the Commentaries On The Mysterium Xarxes, is known as the Master. He was given the Mysterium Xarxes by its author, the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon. The book was never to be touched nor read by anyone other than Camoran. His son, Raven Camoran, became a member in charge of potential members, while his daughter, Ruma Camoran, was in charge of initiation.

Members of the Mythic Dawn are committed to service to Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedric Lord of destruction and natural disasters. When a member of the Mythic Dawn dies in the service of Lord Dagon, they are reborn as 'Ascended Immortals' in Camoran's Paradise. There, they await the day that Lord Dagon takes Tamriel as his own and they will be given shares of his kingdom.

In actuality, to most, Camoran's Paradise is more of a Hell. There, Daedric beasts constantly attack the agents. If the agent is killed, they are reborn, just to live through the nightmare again. Oftentimes agents find themselves questioning their past and current deeds and/or begin to think negatively about the vision. Such agents are given the "Bands of the Chosen" which allow them to enter The Forbidden Grotto, the only way out of Paradise. The bands are said to be given to the Master's favored servants, while in reality, they are agents who begin to think freely. Those who go into The Forbidden Grotto, never come back out.

The Forbidden Grotto is actually a torture chamber overseen by Daedra. The agents in there are tortured using their immortality. Prisoners are put into cages and lowered into pools of magma where they are continually scorched and boiled, unable to die. Some of Camoran's first followers were sent to suffer by torturing their brothers and sisters, operating the cages and questioning prisoners.

The bodies of Mythic Dawn prisoners can be found in Mehrunes Dagon's deadlands, they are always within towers, and their bodies can be released by activating a lever that is connected to their cage.
