[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] Location
The Shrine of Nocturnal is located off the Yellow Road north of Leyawiin, just past Blankenmarch. Optionally, you can add a map marker to your map by talking to Alves Uvenim in Leyawiin Mages Guild (topic "Daedra shrines"; you must have already read Modern Heretics or have spoken with Ulene Hlervu about "Cheydinhal"). You need to be at least level 10 to start this quest. When you approach the shrine, you will be asked to recover the Eye of Nocturnal from a pair of thieves that are hiding out in Leyawiin.
[edit] Locate the Thieves
After talking to people in town, guards being most helpful (use the topic "Leyawiin", not "Eye of Nocturnal"), you discover the thieves are a pair of Argonians living in town (Bejeen and Weebam-Na). A brief discussion with the thieves themselves will get you a quest message, asking you to eavesdrop on the pair to discover the location of the Eye. Sometimes you must leave and come back before they begin to talk. The best option is to sneak into their house and wait out of sight: if they realize that someone is listening to them they will stop talking.
[edit] Tidewater Cave
They reveal the Eye is in a cave to the far south (Tidewater Cave), and an appropriate map marker appears. This cave can be moderately tough; it's heavily populated with Kalperklan Trolls as well as leveled animals, and has two Azhklan Trolls outside. The eye is pretty easy to find. Take a left at the first intersection, then another when that path dead ends, and then one more. The eye is underwater, behind a leveled chest, but is so large and glowing it's hard to miss.
Return the eye to the shrine, and Nocturnal will give you the Skeleton Key and increase your Fame by one point. The Skeleton Key is an unbreakable and ever-lasting lock pick that boosts your security skill by 40 points whenever it is in your inventory.
[edit] Dialogue
At the start of the quest, Nocturnal says:
- Night among strangers. Secrets in the dark. Nocturnal is here. But my Eye is blind and drowned, stolen from its shrine, and hid in dark waters. To steal from a god is most unwise. In Leyawiin, two Argonians think themselves secret, but the Eye has seen them. Find these thieves in the city that spans the waters. Learn where they hide my Eye. Retrieve the Eye of Nocturnal, mortal, and return it to me, and I shall look favorably upon you.
When you complete the quest, she says:
- My Eye is returned, and I once again see into the darkness that is your world. We mock the thieves, for bitter is their loss. You, mortal, may take this. It shall open the secrets of dark places for you.
[edit] Notes
- If you are doing both Nocturnal's quest and Mazoga the Orc's quest at the same time and tell Weebam-Na that Mazoga would like to talk to him, he will exit the house and head for the castle. You will have to play the Mazoga quest through to at least the point where he returns home so you can overhear his conversation with Bejeen, or alternatively, head direct for Tidewater Cave without delay.
- Similarly, if you have already found Tidewater Cave, the map marker will update to point at it as soon as you speak to either of them, rather than needing you to successfully eavesdrop.
- If you listen to Bejeen and Weebam-Na for a while, you will hear them say that they have to sneak past the trolls in the cave. In fact, this is a very easy way to get the Eye if you have a decent sneak skill and/or the ability to go invisible or chameleoned.
- Wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal while activating her shrine will not yield any unique dialogue, despite the fact that the Cowl was stolen from her.
- You can go straight to the cave after receiving the quest and find the eye there without going to Leyawiin at all.
- Nocturnal is the only shrine that doesn't require an offering.
[edit] Journal Entries
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Wherequestis the internal name of the quest, andstageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
