Temple of the Ancestor Moths is a chapel and house north of Cheydinhal (quest-related). [edit] It contains five zones: Ancestor Moth Crypt, The Temple of The Moth Halls, Catacombs of The Temple of The Moth, The Caverns of The Moth, and Shrine of The Moth.

Located in the mountains north of Cheydinhal, this is the home of the Moth Priests, who are the only ones allowed to study the Elder Scrolls. As reading the scrolls progressively makes you lose your sight, the now-blind priests live in the caverns here, tended by the monks. You'll come here in a later Thieves Guild quest. Note that coming here prior to activating this quest can cause a bug.

Inside the Temple are the Blind Monks themselves. Although you may not think they would be, they are rather reasonable with their swords, so either sneak past them, bring an equally reasonable weapon or a few useful spells or scrolls. The majority of Blind Monks carry an Akaviri Dai-Katana, the very same two-handed sword used by Jauffre and found in the Cloud Ruler Temple Armory. Those that don't wield a sword use their hands instead.

Notes

  • This settlement contains 21 Cairn Bolete plants and 67 Wisp Stalk plants.
  • The Blind Moth Prelate in Shrine of the Moth always has a high level amulet or ring which is randomly generated when you enter the final zone (i.e., when you pass through the door that has a load screen). He also respawns. By saving before entering the zone, you can ensure that you get a good ring or amulet. If you leave the zone and wait for 73 hours you can acquire another ring or amulet when the guardian respawns. Using this method, you can get a lot of very powerful rings and amulets.

Bugs

  • If you enter The Temple of The Moth Halls before starting the Turning a Blind Eye quest it will trigger a bug activating the quest. As a result, the next time you talk to Methredhel she will give you a message assigning you the Turning a Blind Eye quest, whether or not you are already in the Thieves Guild.
    • It is possible to proceed to complete the Thieves Guild quest line this way, bypassing the first two-thirds of the Thieves Guild quest.
    • It is also possible to trigger a bug that permanently freezes your game at the end of The Ultimate Heist quest; see that quest's bugs for details.
    • This bug is specifically caused by opening the "Old Wooden Door" in The Temple of The Moth Halls (internally identified as TG08Catacombs2Door). When opened (through picking the lock or obtaining the Catacombs Key), the command SetStage TG08Blind 6 is executed, starting the quest.
    • PC Only This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Oblivion Patch.
