[edit] Quick Walkthrough
- Fight through the Daedra to the castle gates.
- You are sent to Berich Inian, still in the chapel, to collect the key to the guard house.
- Acquire the key, rally your new reinforcements, and make your way through tunnels to get to the gatehouse, where you should open the gates.
- Head to the courtyard, kill the enemies and keep your comrades alive until the area is secure.
- When it's clear, rush the castle, and find the count when Savlian instructs you to.
- Find the count's corpse, and recover his signet ring.
- Return to Savlian Matius with news of the count's death and his ring to finish the quest and receive your reward of the Kvatch Cuirass.
[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] Make it to the Castle
Whenever you're ready, speak to Savlian Matius to begin the battle. Follow him out of the temple and wipe out the daedra. Savlian is an essential character so will only ever be knocked unconscious but take care of the rest of your allies as they are very much mortal. Eventually, Savlian and his men will reach the path that leads to the castle only to find that the gate is closed shut. He sends you to find Berich Inian, who is still in the temple and has the key to the guard house.
[edit] Gatehouse
When you return to the temple, reinforcements have arrived: two Imperial Legion Soldiers and one Imperial Legion Archer who will tell you that they saw the smoke from the gold road. Ask them to follow you, then talk to Berich. He will lead you into the Chapel Undercroft, which leads back outside, then to a hidden tunnel leading to the gatehouse. At this point, Berich departs (your friendly Imperial Legion compatriots will stick with you, though). The tunnel is straightforward and free of enemies. At the end, take the ladder up and out and into the gatehouse (it can be hard to see in the darkness). Head to the end of the gatehouse and open the gates. Berich, Savlian, and his remaining men will rush in headlong into the courtyard -- follow them and try to keep them alive (although, again, Savlian can only be knocked unconscious). You can try to give them a fighting chance by shooting arrows (or magic) through the holes in the gate before opening it, but if you wait too long, Savlian's group will be attacked from behind.
[edit] Into the Castle
Once the courtyard is clear, Savlian will run into the castle. Approach him and he'll tell you to go find the Count while he takes care of the main hall. Onward into the great hall. There's a book that increase your acrobatics skill on a shelf on the right. To the north of the great hall is the Count's bedroom. What a mess! Alas, poor Count Ormellius Goldwine is dead. The first time you search his body, the quest notification will tell you to take his Colovian Signet Ring back to Savlian, but the ring is not automatically given to you: you will have to search his body again to get it. Back in the main hall, inform Savlius of the Count's death to complete the quest. If you give him the ring, he'll give you his Kvatch Cuirass in return, a leveled enchanted light armor. The cuirass fortifies Strength and Endurance by 2 to 8 points (the exact number depends on your character's level when you receive the cuirass).
[edit] Notes
- The castle itself is fairly linear and you will have to clear out the daedra to complete the quest.
- Keeping the guards alive is difficult as the AI does nothing but bull-rush the enemy and the enemies are fairly deadly to the guards. At higher levels, it takes a lot of work (and many saved games) to save them from themselves and keep them all alive. Some tips include:
- Use a Convalescence spell or a custom heal-on-touch spell (which is more magicka effective) to keep the guards alive longer.
- Softening up the enemy with ranged attacks before they close in is a good idea.
- Rather than going head on with the enemy yourself you should attack their back while they fight your allies. Each successful hit you land will stagger them a bit, lessening the pain on your allies. Also, each hit that doesn't land on you will allow you to hit the enemy even more, which is a good thing as you are likely to have a much more powerful weapon than any of your allies.
- Use poisons and/or enchantments to paralyze as well as do maximum damage to any enemies the guards are fighting.
- Sometimes daedric archers will keep showing up on the walls above the castle gate. Most of them will commit suicide by jumping down, but it will prevent Savlian from noticing the gate is locked. You cannot interact with Savlian at this point, unless you kill him (knock him unconscious). It will not be registered as an assault/murder and you won't get a bounty (at least if the other guards were killed by the daedra already). You can talk to him for about five seconds once he gets back on his feet, but, while running from left to right in front of the castle gate, he will only tell you "we have to reach the castle gate."
- If you talk to Brother Martin, he will follow you throughout this quest. Since he is an essential NPC with powerful destruction spells he can make this quest much easier. However, be sure to fetch him before the conversation between Savlian and Tierra is finished, as Martin will leave Kvatch during the evacuation. If you miss talking to him before he leaves, you can catch him as he walks to the camp and get him to come back to the chapel with you.
- If you finish the Main Quest without having done this quest and return to it after, you will find Savlian still waiting for you and plenty of creatures of Oblivion waiting to hack you to pieces.
- It may be advantageous to complete this quest at lower levels. Past level 25, you'll face hordes of high-level Daedra. This means several battles facing several Storm Atronachs, Spider Daedra and Xivilai, adding to that Spider Daedra Spiderling summons, which cause paralyze, and the Xivilai's Clannfears.
- In the Kvatch Castle Great Hall (the one before the count's chambers) on a table to your right you can find the Acrobatics skill book A Dance in Fire, v4.
- Completing this quest is the requirement to obtain Restoration Master Training. See Oleta's page for details about master training.
- If you are having trouble defeating the daedra, try to lure them back to Savlian where the two of you can fight them together.
[edit] Bugs
- Sometimes the game will not recognize that you have the count's ring, or Savlian will not talk to you about it, preventing the game from moving any further.
- One potential solution is to attack Savlian and knock him unconscious. This may reset his dialogue allowing you to finish the quest.
- On the PC, this can be fixed by using the console and typing in
setstage MS49 90.
- Berich Inian might get stuck in the Chapel Undercroft. Since he is needed to open the gate unless he dies, you will not be able to move on in the quest. To get him out, just re-enter and exit the Undercroft, and he will appear.
[edit] Journal Entries
* This Journal Entry is not found ingame.
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Wherequestis the internal name of the quest, andstageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
