[edit] Detailed Walkthrough

[edit] Agnar's Journal

At Dive Rock, near the campfire, you can find Agnar's Journal. This diary tells how Agnar the Unwavering became the chieftain of Thirsk Mead Hall on Solstheim and married Svenja Snow-Song, at some point after an earlier chieftain had rid Thirsk of the fearsome Udyrfrykte. (The earlier chieftain is you if you did The Mead Hall Massacre quest in Bloodmoon.) To rid herself of her nightmares, Svenja felt driven to slay the mother of all the Uderfryktes, the Uderfrykte Matron. Hearing of a horrible creature near Dive Rock, Agnar and Svenja traveled there. In the final diary entry, Agnar the Unwavering had just wavered and fled after his and Svenja's attack on the Uderfrykte Matron had failed miserably. Agnar was about to head back and avenge his wife's death.

[edit] Uderfrykte Matron

Head east of Dive Rock, and look for a few lonesome trees (there aren't many in the area), where you will find the Uderfrykte Matron. Heed Agnar's Journal: attacking with fire is the best solution; frost attacks are a bad idea; normal weapons will work but slowly. For a mountain-dwelling creature, the Matron seems to be rather bad at climbing. If you can stay on the steeper part of the slope above her she will have great difficulty reaching you, so you can pepper her with fireballs and arrows in safety. If you want to loot the corpse afterwards, try to fight away from the cliff's edge: if she dies and tumbles you may never find the body.

On the corpse of the Uderfrykte Matron, you can find Svenja's Frostwyrm Bow (unleveled bow, does 15 pts frost damage on strike) and her gory remains (essentially in the Uderfrykte's stomach). You will also learn Agnar's fate: his corpse is on the ground near where you encountered the Matron. He has fur armor, a silver war axe, and a small amount of gold. For some reason, however, if you attempt to pick up his fur helmet you get the same message as if you had tried to loot the body of an arena opponent.

[edit] Notes

  • There are apparently two possible spellings of these creatures' names. The Cyrodiilic spelling (i.e., that used in the game of Oblivion) is "Uderfrykte", whereas in Solstheim (i.e., in the game of Morrowind), "Udyrfrykte" appears to be more common. The correct spelling is most likely the latter. "Udyrfrykte" is a compound noun of "Udyr" (Norwegian for "Beast") and "frykte" (Norwegian for "to fear"). Translated with a bit of artistic license from Norwegian, Udyrfrykte is "the beast to fear". (Directly translated, it would say 'BeastFearing', which makes no sense grammatically).
  • The unfortunate Andre Labouche (see the Dive Rock entry) is carrying a letter referring to the Horror of Dive Rock, suggesting she was known and feared across Cyrodiil.
  • The Uderfrykte Matron is scripted to be partially invisible with a frost shader, which is an icy blue pulse of light that surrounds its body (see image), however this script isn't always working, so some players may see her as either a normal troll or totally invisible. If she is invisible, you can see the Uderfrykte Matron with a Detect Life spell or enchantment.
  • One easy way to kill is to actually have Udyrfrykte to follow you over Dive Rock's edge but instead of jumping forward, you fall off backwards and press forward so that you land slightly under the edge, sustaining minimal damage while Udyrfrykte would have fallen further and cannot climb, thus allowing easy range attacks.
  • If you're the lazy type (or at a low level and just want the bow), you could just lure the Udyrfyrkte to a nearby town. To pull this off you'll probably want to follow the tips lined out on the Umbra page.
  • The Horror of Dive Rock seems to bear several similarities to the epic poem Beowulf, which follows the adventures of the Norse hero, Beowulf. In his first battle, he is called upon by King Hrothgar to defend his great hall of Heorot, which is being attacked by a beast called Grendel. Beowulf manages to slay Grendel, only to have Grendel's mother (actually a water witch in the original story) come and attack him later on. In The Horror of Dive Rock, references are made to the Mead Hall in Thirsk, which was attacked by the Uderfrykte (Grendel), who was then slain by the earlier chieftain (you, if you completed the quest in Bloodmoon). Svenja Snowsong, the wife of the new chieftain, Angar the Unwavering, then felt compelled to be rid of the beast's mother (Grendel's Mother / The Uderfrykte Matron) as well, and brought Angar with her, only to be slain there on Dive Rock. Then you come to take care of the Uderfrykte Matron and finish what Svenja and Angar set out to do. Interestingly enough, you are the one to have slain both the Uderfrykte from Bloodmoon as well as the Uderfrykte Matron, which would make you, in some respects, the Beowulf of this story.
  • If you read Agnar's journal you probably noticed that he says he has a steel axe while in fact he has a silver axe laying next to his body.
  • Sometimes Agnar's body may be missing from where it should be, however even if this happens his helmet, axe and shield will still be lying where they should be.
  • Svenja's head is identical to the Mother's Head from the Dark Brotherhood questline.
