[edit] Find and fight Caranya
Travel to Fort Ontus, far northwest of Skingrad near the Hammerfell border. Once inside the fort you'll find mages who will tell you to talk to Caranya, assuming you are joining her group of renegades. Continue on to the Ontus Understreets. Caranya may be found in the center of the Understreets; two entrances are blocked by a gate each, and only one is accessible from the outside. In the dialogue, she reveals she is a Necromancer. After she says, "The King of Worms will feast on your soul!" she will attack you. Because she is unarmored and allowed the player character to get near her, she should not be a difficult opponent. She does, however, have powerful spells that could cause some serious damage when hit in rapid succession. When she has been killed, take the Necromancer's Amulet from her body. This fight can be greatly simplified with Silence spells or poisons. If these are not available, one may use Resist Magic spells or armor. Another strategy is to initiate the fight by talking to Caranya and retreating through the gate you recently came in from. You may then use arrows and/or spells to attack Caranya; she becomes inaccurate through the gate.
[edit] Make the Escape
Leave the fort and head for the Arcane University. The once-friendly mages in the fort will now be wearing necromancer robes and will attack you on sight. They are far weaker than Caranya, but they can be very deadly in groups. One way to prevent them from grouping around you is to kill all of the mages one at a time before you enter to kill Caranya. Once at the University, speak with Traven to complete the quest.
- A further strategy for dealing with Caranya is to attack before talking to her. She is considered "essential" so you will only be able to knock her unconscious. When she wakes up, begin the fight. As she was previously knocked out, her health will be very low.
- The Necromancer's Amulet disappears once Traven takes it; it is removed from the game. At high levels, it is one of the most powerful amulets in the game. For instance at level 25 or higher it provides more Fortify Magicka than two transcendent sigil stone-enchanted items. Consider keeping the amulet if finishing the Mages Guild quest line is not that important to you.
- If you are on the PC, you can complete the quest and later type
player.additem 0007BE2B in the Console to give yourself the level 25+ version of the amulet.
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch causes the amulet to appear in the Arch-Mage's night-stand after the Mages Guild quests are complete.
- You may attack the mages before killing Caranya although this will count as murder if you are seen.
- A method for dealing with some of the mages in the earlier stages of the fort is to walk into them, nudging them into the dart trap in one of the main rooms. Whilst this is time-consuming, it does not count as murder. Also, after Caranya has been killed, the necromancers can be lured into the dart trap.
- Even after speaking with Caranya (when the mages turn hostile and attack on sight) killing them will still sometimes count as a murder if you strike first.
- If you take the option of killing the mages, you will notice that the corpses become dressed again in Necromancer's Robes after Caranya is dead. This is a bug that occurs likely because the developers wanted the mages to change robes to show their true identity.
- If you have obtained the power Risen Flesh, you can get multiple copies of the Necromancer's Amulet by casting the spell on Caranya and killing her again. The Staff of Worms can also be used to reanimate her, if you can complete the Mages Guild quests and return to Fort Ontus before Caranya's corpse disappears.
- However, if you copy the amulet before returning to Traven, it will prevent you from completing the quest: when you talk to Traven again, he will just ask if you have talked to Caranya. It is possible to avoid this by handing in the amulet first, thus completing the quest, then returning to Fort Ontus to reanimate on Caranya's corpse.

- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
