[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] Humble Beginnings
You begin the game in a bare prison cell owning little more than some beat up clothing. As you explore the cell and accustom yourself to your surroundings, a prisoner in the cell opposite yours threatens and berates you. When he's finished, the Emperor of Tamriel, Uriel Septim VII, and three of his bodyguards arrive at your cell and are surprised to find you in it. One guard orders you to stand aside and then the Emperor steps inside. As he enters, the Emperor recognizes you from a prophetic dream, and explains that his bodyguards, the Blades, are leading him through a secret escape route. The reason for the guards' surprise becomes clear: the cell you occupy was supposed to be left empty because the route happens to start in your cell. The Emperor pardons you of any crimes you may have committed, and allows you to follow him for a time.
[edit] An Alternate Route
No sooner than you enter the escape route alongside the Blades, you and your companions are confronted by assassins, clad in blood red robes and jet black armor, who attempt to cut a path through the Blades to the Emperor. Although they are quickly subdued, they manage to slay the residing Captain, Renault. (You cannot loot Renault's armor from her corpse, though you can take her Akaviri Katana, torch, and a Steel Shortsword, if you loot her. However, the katana cannot be kept: Baurus will take it from you at the end of the tutorial.)
After the battle, the Emperor's Blades soon force you to stay behind, distrustful of you, and lock the only exit behind them, forcing you to find another way out of the prison. As you look around, a pair of rats suddenly burst through an unstable section of a wall and begin to attack you. Dispatch them in whichever way you please, though this early in the game your combat options are limited to either your fists or the late Renault's katana, of which the katana is the better. You can also use the Flare spell that you start with - you don't have to wait for that part of the tutorial. Afterwards, proceed through the hole in the wall made by the rats to discover a lost cavern - and a new way out.
The path ahead is straight forward, populated only by a variety of rats, goblins, and undead. There are a few treasures along the path hidden away, so keep your eyes open - most are obvious if you're observant enough. Almost everything in the tutorial is preset, though you can still find a variation of items in a few places (i.e. Burgundy Linens to Hourglasses). Specific locations for particular items are:
- Light Armor: Skeleton just beyond the entry hole.
- Heavy Armor: Chest in the first room in the Imperial Substructure, large room in middle of the same area.
- Blunt Weapon: Chest to right of the entry hole, goblin corpse by the exit door in same room.
- Blade Weapon: Captain Renault (Although you cannot keep her katana, she also carries a Steel Shortsword), Skeleton just beyond the entry hole.
- Marksman Weapon: Skeleton just beyond the entry hole.
- Alchemy Equipment: First room in the Natural Caverns.
- Goblin Shaman Staff: Goblin Witch in the Natural Caverns.
- Repair Hammer: Two chests next to the Goblin Witch in the Natural Caverns.
You can also acquire a variety of weapons and shields from the various goblins you encounter.
[edit] Reuniting with the Emperor
After passing through the Natural Caverns, you find yourself on a ledge overlooking the Emperor and his Blades, who briefly debate their tactical options before being attacked by a group of more assassins. As soon as you jump from your vantage point to their level, the Blades become infuriated at your appearance and flirt with the idea of killing you on the spot, suspecting you to be an assassin as well. This idea, however, is soon quelled by the Emperor, who demands that you not only be left unharmed but allowed to follow. He briefly discusses the Nine Divines and fate with you before asking you of your birthsign, at which point you are able to select your character's birthsign. Please note that each birthsign provides its own unique advantages and disadvantages; see the page on birthsigns for more information. After choosing your birthsign, the Blades reluctantly agree to the Emperor's request, and the more level-headed of the two, Baurus, gives you a torch to carry to illuminate their path unless you are already holding one (note that you are not required to carry the torch, it is merely a suggestion on Baurus' part).
As you accompany the Emperor, beset by more assassins, you can find two chests: One overlooking a small area with stairs nearby, the other in plain sight near the sewer door. Because the Blades can effortlessly take care of any nearby threats, it is very easy to slip away from battle to retrieve any treasure.
[edit] The Circle Opens
As you and your companions reach the entrance to the sewers, the next area on the escape route, you find the entrance to the sewers is barred from the other side, rendering you unable to go further. Cornered, a battalion of assassins ambush the group, and the two Blades stash you and the Emperor in a small side room with orders to guard him with your life. As the two seasoned soldiers battle the assassins, greatly outnumbered, the Emperor turns and speaks to you. He says ominously that he can go no further, but although there is no hope in sight, there is one last heir to the throne not already murdered: an illegitimate son. Quickly, he bestows the Amulet of Kings to you, and orders you to deliver it to Jauffre at Weynon Priory, who alone knows where to find the last heir. He bids you farewell, cryptically saying you must "close shut the jaws of Oblivion." Shortly afterward, a panel in the wall slides away, and from it emerges an assassin who mercilessly strikes down the helpless Emperor in a single stroke before turning his sights on you (note that the Emperor's death is a scripted one - there is no way to prevent it and your character is frozen in place during the action).
Baurus soon rushes in to help you deal with the last remaining assassin, and adds to the already gloomy outlook that his Blades counterpart, Glenroy, has fallen as well. After repeating to him the Emperor's instructions, he entrusts you with the key to the sewers, and questions you of your class. It is at this point you are able to select your class, of which each, like birthsigns, have their own unique advantages and disadvantages (though class has a much larger impact on gameplay than birthsigns); see Classes for more information. After selecting your class, Baurus stays behind to guard the Emperor's body and ensure no assassins follow you. If you retrieved Renault's and/or Glenroy's katana, Baurus will confiscate them from you to be returned to a place of honor given to fallen Blades.
Your journey through the sewers is a brief one, and the only resistance you encounter pales in comparison to that of the Natural Caverns. Eventually you will come upon a grate protecting a long tunnel leading outside (it is rather obvious where the exit is; daylight will beam through it), where, before exiting the sewers, you have one last chance to alter your race, class, or birthsign. Adjust them as you see fit, if at all, and exit the sewers to clear the tutorial and be treated to a breathtaking view of Cyrodiil, and the world beyond.
From here you are free to continue on as you wish. You may continue with the main quest, or you may explore Cyrodiil, doing whatever you please. The brilliance of Oblivion is the freedom it offers in gameplay - you may now experience that first hand.
[edit] Notes
- If you are playing Oblivion for the first time, you may want to read the page for First Time Players.
- Don't be afraid to train your skills some, particularly since the enemies here don't put up too much of a fight. However, the details of skill increases during the tutorial are a bit quirky, see Character Creation for details.
- This quest does not appear in your journal, and there are no quest markers or quest items until you receive the Amulet of Kings from the Emperor.
- Save before leaving the sewers, and keep the save. This way if you ever want to start Oblivion again you can skip the tutorial, and change your class and birthsign before leaving.
- The assassins are unusually strong; if you are not on a very low difficulty, it may be wise to sit back and let the Blades do their jobs.
- Attempting to fight the assassins when the Blades tell you to guard the emperor will cause assassins to endlessly spawn until a point where you are close enough to the emperor that he can give you the Amulet of Kings.
- The female Blade captain Renault drops an Akaviri Katana when she is killed by the assassins, as does Glenroy. These are much better weapons than anything else available prior to leaving the sewers, so they are very useful until Baurus takes them from you when he gives you his key.
- It is possible to claim the Emperor's silver shortsword. If you attack the Emperor, he will draw his sword, at which point you can simply yield to him. When he is killed by the assassin, he will drop his sword. Attacking the emperor will have the standard consequences for assault such as a bounty and potentially Infamy.
- Depending on your character's class and how you want to role-play, consider keeping the Wrist Irons you start with. They have zero weight, can be enchanted, and are the only non-armor enchantable item that can be worn on the hands. They are very useful for a non-armored character (such as a mage). Without DLC plug-ins or mods, this is the only set in the game, so choose the enchantment carefully.
- When you emerge from the Natural Caverns to rejoin the Emperor, Baurus and Glenroy, you'll be on a raised area that they can't get to and they have no ranged weapons or spells. You can practice your Marksman and Destruction skills on them; they are all unkillable. Baurus and Glenroy will try to attack, but when you're done, jump down and talk to the Emperor and all will be well. Attacking the emperor will have the standard consequences for assault such as a bounty and potentially Infamy.
- Do not attempt to pickpocket the Amulet of Kings. The guards will attack you if you do.
- Any bounty you may have acquired in-game at this point (such as from attacking the Emperor) will be immediately cleared upon leaving the sewers.
- You will find plenty of loot on your way out that can be sold for a good price on the outside. The problem is that the loot is way too much to carry in one go and you can't return later to pick it up as the way back will be closed. Nonetheless, with proper planning you should be able to bring it all. There are 4 "points of no return".
- The first is where the tunnel from the natural caverns enters the Imperial Subterrane; to save the treasures, just stand in the opening and drop your loot on the floor below and jump down.
- The second is the door from Imperial Subterrane to The Sanctum, which is a one-way door. Just gather your loot on the floor close to the door, pick it all up and activate the door (the door will work even while you are over-encumbered).
- In the Sanctum you will find the third point of no return. On the bottom of the stairs, a gate will be raised to set the assassins' trap. On both sides of the stairs there are 'ditches'; dump your loot down one of them before you proceed down the stairs.
- The fourth and final point of no return is the exit from the sewers but, as it will remain open until you have delivered the amulet, you are in no hurry. Sell your loot in the market district; it should net you 1000-1500 gold depending on how much you are willing to part with.
- Any loot that you might want to keep indefinitely, but do not want to carry, can be stored safely outside near the sewers exit. Amongst the rocks at the waterline to the right of the dock (looking from the sewer exit) can be found two sets of clams, one above the waterline and one just below, within reach of one another. The clams are containers which are safe for long-term storage, although they will eventually reset (causing the items to be replaced by Flawed Pearls).
- All of the doors that the assassins come out of are locked and require a key which is not available in game. Even if you use console commands to "unlock" the door, activating it will not take you anywhere.
[edit] Bugs
- Sometimes the assassins will get stuck up on a ledge. If you jump carefully, you can attack and kill them or shoot them with a bow.
- The assassins won't attack you until the Blades see them. This has no repercussions whatsoever. Walking towards the blades will trigger the attack
[edit] Journal Entries
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage MQ01 stage. Wherestageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
