Valus Odiil

Valus Odiil, an Imperial warrior, is a retired adventurer-turned-farmer living in Chorrol. He and his two sons, Antus and Rallus, have recently been chased off their farm by marauding goblins, and they will need your help to get rid of them.

Before starting the related quest, he spends all his time walking around the Grey Mare asking about his sons. Once you have agreed to help him, he resumes his normal schedule. Valus wakes up at 4am and proceeds to eat breakfast for two hours. At 6am, he leaves his house to head to the Grey Mare. He spends the entire day drinking there, not returning to his house until 8pm. He wanders around for four more hours before heading to bed at midnight.

After the completion of The Killing Field quest, Valus' schedule will be the same except on Loredas and Sundas. Now that his farm is free of aggressive creatures, he chooses to spend his weekends there. When the clock strikes midnight on Loredas, he leaves his home to head to the farm. Once he arrives, he sleeps there until 6am. He wakes up and begins his usual trip to the Grey Mare. Given the distance he has to travel, he likely will spend very little or no time there before he returns to his farm at 8am. He enjoys a two-hour breakfast before heading back to the Grey Mare at 10am. He returns to the farm at 11am, so he will likely get very little drinking done yet again. Once he returns to his farm, Valus spends the rest of the day wandering around. At 9pm, he walks toward Chorrol again. This time, however, it is to return to his house to pace around there. At midnight, he travels back to the farm to sleep if it is now Sundas. If it is now Morndas, he sleeps at his house instead and resumes his normal weekday schedule.

He wears common middle-class clothing: a quilted doublet, tan linens and doeskin shoes. He's armed with an iron dagger and carries medium-sized amount of gold, eight bottles of mead, the key to his house, and the key to the Odiil Farm house.

The Killing Field[edit]

"Hasn't been the same since his boys took off."

When you walk around Chorrol, you may overhear citizens talking about how Valus has not been his usual self recently:

"I saw Valus Odiil at the Grey Mare again today. Hasn't been the same since his boys took off."
"Have you seen Valus Odiil recently? Spends all day in the tavern since his boys left."

Sure enough, you will find Valus at the inn approaching both you and any of the other patrons with the same question: "Hello. You haven't seen my sons, have you? They went off into the forest to fight those monsters, and I'm worried about them."

As you engage in conversation, it becomes even clearer how distraught he is:

"My sons! Have you seen my sons?"

If you exit dialogue at this point, he asks hopelessly: "Oh, my sons. My poor sons. Who will help them now?"

If you continue talking to him, he soon reveals why he is so worried about his children:

"Yes, Rallus and Antus. They're going to fight off the creatures at our farm, but I fear for their safety."
Creatures
"For the last few days, we've suffered attacks from these creatures at our farm not far from Chorrol. They're coming from someplace in the Great Forest. I don't know where, but Rallus may know more by now. My boys will take up the fight even if the guards won't. Doesn't matter if it's outside the town walls - it still affects us all. They expect me to go with them, but... I fear in my old age, I'm not the warrior I once was. Would you... would you go in my place?"
No, I won't help.
"I won't beg you, but I ask that you please reconsider. My boys need another steady hand at their side, else they may not survive."
Yes, I'll help.
"Somehow I knew you'd do the right thing. I'm supposed to meet them at Weynon Priory. You'd best get whatever supplies you need now, so you can get there in time. I... I need a drink to calm my nerves. Please, excuse me."

If you agreed to help, the quest will officially start. If you did not offer your assistance, when you talk to Valus again, he optimistically asks:

"Have you changed your mind? My sons could use your help in their fight."

You will then have the same options as before to respond with.

"Rallus knows why we have to be the ones to get rid of them. Antus... he's another story."

After you agree to help, Valus urges you to find his sons when you approach him: "Please, don't waste time speaking to an old man. Go and help my sons."

This attitude persists when you engage him in conversation:

"Have you talked to my sons yet? I don't want them leaving on their own."
Creatures
"Rallus knows why we have to be the ones to get rid of them. Antus... he's another story. He's a good boy, but he's hot-headed. Keep a close eye on him, will you?"

He wishes you well before you head off to Weynon Priory: "Good luck to you."

You can ask the city guard about the creatures, and they will confirm that Valus reached out to them: "Aye, we've heard the old man's story. Nothing to back it up, though, except the word of those two kids of his. No real evidence. Even if it was true, it's out in the forest somewhere. We need to keep what's inside the town walls safe, not go running around outside them."

His sons will both be disappointed but otherwise have completely different opinions on Valus asking you to take his place in the war against the creatures:

Antus: "What do you mean he's not coming? He told YOU to come with us instead? Has he no honor?"
Rallus: "He is not coming with us? I think I understand, and it is better that he remain safe. Though I wonder why he has asked you to take his place."

Once you have talked to his sons and agreed to support them in their fight, Valus will continue to urge you on if you return to Chorrol:

"Rallus and Antus need your help, whether they know it or not. There's no time to waste."
Creatures
"Please, hurry so you can accompany my sons. They're probably waiting at Weynon Priory by now."

He bids farewell with one last reminder: "Hurry, get to Weynon Priory."

After the battle, Valus will be eager to hear the results when he sees you: "You're back! You must tell me everything!"

What he says next will vary depending on the results of the fight:

Both sons alive: "You're back! And you've brought my sons with you! How wonderful!"
Only Antus alive: "You're back! And Antus is with you.... thank you for bringing him home safely. But where is Rallus? I don't see him... oh, please tell me I haven't lost one of my sons."
Only Rallus alive: "You're back! And Rallus is with you.... but where is Antus? I don't see him."

If both sons are dead, he will instead use the previous greeting about his sons needing your help whether they know it or not.

Valus' reaction and your reward will continue to vary depending on the health of Antus and Rallus when you reveal what happened in the fight:

Heavy Armor Master Training[edit]

Valus does not offer any services. In particular, he does not offer Heavy Armor training. However, he will provide a recommendation for Heavy Armor Master Training with Pranal:

"Long ago, I learned much of what I know from a man named Pranal. An excellent teacher, he was. You should consider learning from him. I met him in Hammerfell, but I understand he moved to Cyrodiil a few years back. The Roxey Inn, I think? You should look there for him."

If you ask him about training again, you will receive a shortened version of his previous response:

"You'll have to find Pranal if you want to learn more. That's all there is to it."

Notes[edit]

  • Valus has dialogue for a Nibenese topic. However, this topic is not available in normal gameplay so it cannot be heard. He would have said: "That's what we call folk from the eastern side of Cyrodiil. The old name of the lowland part of Cyrodiil is Nibenay."
