Adoring fan at the planes of Oblivion[edit]

It is possible for the Adoring Fan to disappear from the game after collecting a Sigil Stone. This is caused by running so far ahead of him that he has not entered the Sigillum Sanguis by the time you retrieve the Sigil Stone, resulting in him being "left behind" in a plane of Oblivion forever. This will also work if you bring him to Oblivion, tell him to wait, and then close the Oblivion gate.

I do not know, but what I did see is that when AF dies in a plane of Oblivion, he will respawn. I took AF with me (and all other followers I could find) into the Great Gate. He died there, and when I returned to Bruma, my AF was lying dead on the battle field underneath the Siege Crawler. A few days later he was respawned at the Arena. 83.80.239.210 12:47, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

He has to still be alive when you close the gate, otherwise he will respawn, this way he's actually trapped in Oblivion as only the people inside the Sigillum Sanguis get transported back to Tamriel (in most cases IIRC). -- Nacht 20:05, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

reanamate[edit]

hi i was just wondering if this page really needs the thing about reanamateing him to make him fight for you cause all NPCS that you reanamate will fight for you--GUM!!! 14:56, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

ok i'm going to delete it you can put it back if you want--GUM!!! 15:06, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
You're right that it applies to all the NPCs, but since The Adoring Fan is generally seen as useless, and the section is about his advantages, I don't think it's inappropriate to list it. It could be argued either way, but I'd like to give it more than 10 minutes for other people to give input on before it's deleted. Robin HoodTalk 17:21, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
ok i guess that's a good idea so if anyone wants to say something say it NOW!!!--GUM!!! 17:30, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
ok its been like 1 or 2 hours so i'm gonna delete it if someone wants to put it back strat up a new topic and see how many people say that they want it back--GUM!!! 20:04, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
This is a wiki and responses are slow due to people being at work, having "real life" to deal with, etc. We normally wait several days. I won't change it for now, but I wouldn't mind someone else's feedback on this. Robin HoodTalk 20:37, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
oh ok sorry about that i'm still getting used to the way things work here i'll cheak back in a day or two--GUM!!! 00:02, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Inventory Resetting?[edit]

This edit was reverted with the summary "removing bound armor note- his items reset after you fast travel, so it is pretty much useless". That has been reported here, but I'm afraid I don't trust the original reporter given his record of vandalism. Can anybody else test this? And yes - I'll test it myself too. rpeh •TCE 22:15, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

I've experienced this before. With the adoring fan and three separate Mage apprentices, Any bound armour or weapons are gone after fast travelling.--VergilSparda 23:00, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
All generic NPCs will get back all of their items lost and lose all of their items added when they fast travel, because they have been reset. Example- Adoring Fan given bound dagger- lost it. Example- Took helmet off of Dunmer Knight of the Nine- he got it back. Gave a black robe to Mage Apprentice- he lost it. You can guess more examples. However, they do keep it as long as you do not fast travel, for last stands like the Battle for Bruma.--Arch-Mage MattTalk 02:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I have tested Bound Armor in his Inventory by doing the Reverse Pickpocket glitch, it does go away when you Fast Travel, sadly, so it is pretty much useless unless you absolutely NEVER Fast Travel, which can be hard to do sometimes especially if you are in a hurry to get a quest done and the fastest way to get it done would be to Fast Travel, which would get rid of his armor, but anyway if you don't Fast Travel at all really and pretty much travel to other towns by foot them it would be a fun idea to do so, so you can have a little 4 foot tall Wood Elf follow you around in Daedric-looking armor... --Dremora Lord 03:54, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
A 4 foot wood elf that never helps you in combat willingly and constantly annoys you.. GREAT!--VergilSparda 15:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Wait, isn't this just a useless glitch? In the fact that you can never fast travel (which I do all the time), he STILL runs away and does nothing to help in combat and now that he's armoured (ARMOURED, ARMORED I'M BRITISH! GET OVER IT!) I'm guessing he can survive more punishment, meaning that there won't be any more Ogres sending him flying so high that he hits that other planet opposite Nirn that we see at night! dissapeird?[edit]

hi!on my game the ADF has simpaly dissaperid and i know he isn't locked in obivion(ahh!)cause i'm avoiding the main quest until i do something and it's been like two months(in game)and he isn't back!--GUM!!! 16:59, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Where was the last time you saw him, or did he die?--Arch-Mage MattTalk 17:04, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
We need more specifics to where you left him, nobody can help if you just say "HE'S GONE!!"--VergilSparda 17:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Arch-Mage Matt beat me to it ¬_¬ :P --VergilSparda 17:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
hmm...i didn't leave him any where i don't think i told him to leave...--GUM!!! 17:08, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, where did you see him last? If it was inside an Oblivion Gate then there's no point in continuing this discussion.--VergilSparda 17:11, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

() as i said up top i didn't start the main quest yet and it was a loooooong time ago so i'm not really sure--GUM!!! 17:13, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Then I'm sorry but if you can't even give us a clue as to where you last seen him, there's no chance that anybody can help you.--VergilSparda 17:14, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
well i did kill him.so would that be the problem?--GUM!!! 17:18, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
He would respawn after three days if you killed him, IF you told him to return to the arena before you killed him he will be there. If you told him to follow you he should of found you within 3 days. If you told him to WAIT before you killed him he will be in the place you killed him.. ALIVE. But if you cannot remember where he is I am sorry that's your problem nobody can help you find him.--VergilSparda 17:20, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
i never told him to wait any where.ever--GUM!!! 17:29, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Take a hint Gum: Nobody can help you!!! If you don't specify where The Adoring Fan ACTUALLY WAS before you "lost" him then I'm telling you Nobody can help!--VergilSparda 17:31, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

() If he died, and was following you, he will respawn in three days, and he will find you. If he wasn't following you, he will be found in the arena lodge opposite from Branwen and Saliith.--Arch-Mage MattTalk 17:34, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

ok well i'm not really sure but i think the last time i saw him was he was running away from some monster in a alyied ruin but i'm not sure it may have been on my other file--GUM!!! 17:50, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Then look around there, anything could have happened we can't tell you otherwise. I'd wait three days before doing anything though.--Arch-Mage MattTalk 18:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
yeah but that may be any alyied ruin and i have waited like a week before--GUM!!! 18:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Clearly you're ignoring what I said previously. We cannot find the Adoring fan for you! Stop editing this talk unless it is necessary. This conversation is going nowhere.--VergilSparda 19:41, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
well ok i guess i'll leave this alone it's just i wan't my ADF back so i'll not say any thing until i find the ADF--GUM!!! 18:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
i think i just found out why. i'm pretty sure now my game has a problem with respawning NPCs(except for bandints and that tipe of thing)--GUM!!! 13:09, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

() Hey, can I ask for help here? My Adoring Fan has disappeared too. I have lots of information too. I fired him in the Market District just as I exited Jensine's 'Good as New' Merchandise to initiate 'Unfriendly Competition'. Now I can't find him in the Arena Grounds and I look there often because I normally do a UNSTOPPABLE KILLING-SPREE RAMPAGE there. Help! P.S. If you want to see where I got the Killing-Spree thingy, check out Youtube Fallout 3 Slo-Burn Flamer by Orcidea. Golden Eagle 13:16, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

So you did a "killing spree"? He may have fled town if you did your killing spree nearby him, so your best bet is to look around outside of the town for him, he couldn't have gotten too far because all he needs to do is just get out of town and he will get out of the danger zone, if you don't find him then you could do some Quests (like continue on with the "Unfriendly Competition" quest) to pass time and hope that he gets killed by an enemy and Respawns at the Arena District, good luck finding him! P.S. I lost mine just a few days ago, I forgot that I told him to wait at the bar in the Imperial City :p --Dremora Lord 17:33, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Hey, i was outside the imperial city a little bit south the sewer entrance/exit and i told AF to wait at some stone where there is a stone next to it in the middle of the river alowing you to cross without swimming but i upon return there he was gone. now im mad and i want to kill him but hes not there... 82.21.216.78 19:30, 31 May 2010 (UTC) Justin.
how long were you gone? its possible he may wander off just like shadowmere — Unsigned comment by Lindenbrock (talkcontribs) at 02:36 on 15 October 2010
An enemy probably chased him off, once someone does he doesn't run back to where you told him to wait since that zone is hostile-controlled, he just stays in a 'safe zone' area where enemies aren't present, I suggest checking nearby the sewers area, if you find his body or don't find him at all then check by the Arena district, hope this will help you out. --Dremora Lord 17:59, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Another use for Adoring Fan (street lamp)[edit]

I don't expect this to be in the article as it's a tad silly, but I was strolling along the street in front of my home in Skingrad late one evening when I noticed that my side of the street was decidedly lacking in torch-lit streetlamps. I therefore now have Adoring Fan waiting indefinitely atop Rosethorn Hall's balcony to perform this function. He does a fine job, and because he's above me, I don't have to put up with his "By Azura! By Azura! By Azura!" crap every time I walk past the house.— Unsigned comment by 174.0.106.101 (talk) at 06:49 on 17 May 2010

Yeah, he is good for lighting up your path, or better yet a dagger/torch resupplying station (repeatedly killing him and then looting him), hehe... --Dremora Lord 21:42, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
He is also good for a decoy when you run into a confined space with, lets say trolls, and if your like me-a sneaky person- --<font colour=blue — Unsigned comment by Mr Skyrim (talkcontribs) on 10 April 2012

Another use for the Adoring Fan?[edit]

I was being followed around by the Adoring Fan, as usual, and I said to myself "OK, I hate this guy right now" and murdered him with a spell. My killing was witnessed by forces unknown. (I used summons to kill the Argonian prisoners in that specific Arena fight, and didn't seem to get credit for them as murders.)

So if somehow you beat the Arena without getting credit for a murder, and you'd LIKE credit for a murder for the DB quests, you can just kill Adoring Fan where nobody can see to get mad? Anyway, I have tons of mods installed, but if someone can confirm that this counts as murder in vanilla, it's a pretty good way to get away with a murder - unlike most NPCs, he respawns. Input? 70.100.84.36 23:40, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

i have killed him once or twice, i can remember just recently i was gettin the stone for the "turning a blind eye" quest in the thieves guild and a priest started running at me so i shot him but the fan got in the way and took the arrow for him, and i did not get the message about my killing being seen by unknown forces, but when i kill guards now that message dosnt pop up when it did before so this might not be completly reliable Start of randomness: D-Gray Man=Teh epikness, Road Kamelot=Teh epikness, D-Gray Man+Road Kamelot= world blows up due to 2 much awesomeness. Hellsing=Teh epikness, Alucard=Teh epikness, Hellsing+Allucard=Same as D-Gray Man. End of randomness 02:28, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
I killed him in vanilla for the DB quest. We went for a walk out side of town, and I fired a 110pt fire spell at him, and it took down only half his health. Not bad for an unarmoured NPC. The little tit took off like his trousers were on fire - I was playing as an imperial, under the sign of the steed, with a +25 pt speed trinket (equalling 145 speed)... and I still couldn't catch him. Suggest use a burden spell on him, maybe a drain fatigue spell as well. I got the "witnessed by forces unknown" message, and sure enough, I was visited in the night by the DB meet-and-greet party. He respawned the next time I started the game, saw me, and took off like a shot - again - but this time he was running to the dungeon my quest had told me to raid. I couldn't talk to him, and fired off a few charm/calm humanoid spells at him, but either they were too weak or he was too angry, and he kept running. He ran around the dungeon, and pulled a mob of trolls on me. Nice move. To top it all off, he was friendly with me when he finished his pull, and I had to put up with 'By Azura!' from him again. --DifficultCustomer (talk) 03:35, 13 February 2013 (GMT)

Advantages[edit]

Is it just me, or does most of the Advantages section seem opinionated and unnecesary, or at least generic? I was considering removing or changing it, but it might cause just a big of a storm as the Roleplaying pages. --Arch-Mage Matt Did I Do That? 01:10, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

"The Adoring Fan is not entirely useless", according to the Official Strategy Guide. For example:
  • He will serve as a radar for you by fleeing when there is an enemy present and returning when it is clear.--Music will do that too
  • He will carry a torch at night or in dark places.--they are free and weightless...
  • You can pickpocket the Adoring Fan to increase your Sneak skill. He does not alert the guards, although nearby witnesses may still inform the guards.--VERY useful. I actually do this too.
  • He can be used as bait for booby traps (e.g. Oblivion Fire Towers may shoot him rather than you).--hit and miss, not effective
  • Similarly, he can be used as a distraction for enemies (e.g. bandits may attack him instead of you).--ditto
  • Casting a Rally spell with enemies nearby can cause him to fight rather than flee.--he might be of help...I can't imagine much
  • Players may enjoy devising colorful ways in which to kill him. These include throwing him off Dive Rock, using him as live target practice, placing him in a locked room and spawning a monster via console commands and placing a bounty on his head, forcing him to fight off the local guards.--...we deleted Things to do when you're bored a while ago now
And those are my opinions --Corevette789 01:42, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
The pickpocketing one and the rally one (It's an option, at least) can be put into the main article, I'd assume, and you've gotten rid of all the others. :) --Arch-Mage Matt Did I Do That? 19:30, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
The one about carrying a torch I think should go on the page beacause I haven't noticed any of my other followers exhibiting that behaviour and it's actually useful not to have to carry your own torch sometimes. Datacaust 00:24, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Tell him to Wait[edit]

Moved from Page: --Brf 16:44, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

  • It is possible to get rid of him out of your sight without sending him back to the Arena. You can simply ask him to wait inside a gate to Oblivion and leave. — Unsigned comment by 93.97.244.88 (talk) on 21 december 2010
Why inside a gate? Can't you just tell him to wait anywhere? --Brf 16:44, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
Technically yes, he will wait anywhere for you. But when he waits in an Oblivion that gets closed he cannot return to Tamriel. --DKong27 Talk Cont 17:25, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
So when you tell him to wait and then leave, he eventually goes back to the arena rather than waiting for you? --Brf 17:29, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
That's what happens to me. I tell him to wait and then 3 in-game days later he is back at the arena. I thought that this is just him respawning or something but I told him to wait in Anvil then went back to the arena and slept 3 days. Lo and Behold, he was back! Count Marius Caro 08:43, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Moved notes[edit]

  • Even if you are wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, he still knows it is you and offers no new dialogue.
  • You can pickpocket the Adoring Fan to increase your Sneak skill. He does not alert the guards, although nearby witnesses may still inform the guards.
  • Casting a Rally spell with enemies nearby can cause him to fight rather than flee.
  • Murders of the Adoring Fan have made Dive Rock famous (much to the amusment on YouTube). In fact, if the player makes him stand on the tip of the cliff and asks him to return to the Arena, he will agree and run off the cliff to his doom.

A lot of these seem unimportant (Especially the last one). The first one falls under the "We do not need to mention the Gray Cowl on every page" rule. The next one is not unique, in fact all NPCs with low responsibility would behave in a similar way (from my experience at least). Third, well known game effect. The last note seems to be just pointless to have here in my opinion. If you wish to reinstate any of these notes please leave a message here explaining your reasoning for its relevance before doing so. --AKB Talk 22:35, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

  • If you give the Adoring Fan a good weapon and good armor, he is more likely to fight against creatures.
And another. Maybe I am missing something here, but I see no reason for this to happen. I'll check the script in a second. If anyone can provide evidence this does happen though please re-add it, sorry for missing whatever causes this in the first place. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 04:21, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
I think the final one could fit in with it. Trivia is a nice addition to some of these pages. The adoring fan still does ignore the fact the cliff is between him and the arena, something that would at least be mentionable. --Rosilea (talk) 03:53, 29 October 2012 (GMT)

Hasen't Come Out[edit]

After the DB quest Scheduled for Execution I went back there with my Adoring Fan. (Note that I did not kill a single guard and this is after the main quest). In the first area the guards did not attack him so I thought he was fine. Until the second area, the guard killed him. After that I left, undetected. It`s been an in-game month and I haven't seen him at all. What happened to him and how can I get him back? Oh and don't get me wrong, I get very annoyed with Adoring Fan. But, after a while you kind of start to miss him.~~Argonian8 5:59PM Mar, 16/2011

Wait 73 in-game hours before going to the Arena. If you visit his respawn area before the three days are up, it will reset the timer. Besides, you should be enjoying the break! Legoless 22:17, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Respawning[edit]

So lemme get this straight if you kill him outside, say,an oblivon world or a cave etc he respawns but where. somthing that is worth mentioning[edit]

shouldnt the adoring fan be marked as a child for the reason that you can tell him beat it "kid" i dont need a fan? — Unsigned comment by Timedragon1 (talkcontribs) at 16:33 on 21 May 2011

its just an expression hes about 16-20 (Eddie the head 15:37, 21 May 2011 (UTC))
Actually, the CS says that he's 15 (the age slider for his face is all the way to the left). This isn't uncommon though, and like Eddie said the "kid" remark is just a saying (although rather out-of-place in medieval-styled Cyrodiil). Legoless 15:42, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Heck when you do the arena quest he calls you kid a lot Wolfy 15:43, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Why Hasn't Anybody Mentioned?[edit]

Isn't he the only NPC in oblivion that respawns without being essential? Doesn't that make him a perfect Black Soul farm? I mean, everybody comes up with ways to use him, but nobody ever suggests soul trap, kill, repeat? 96.236.112.232 09:15, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Not very effective. You'd have to wait three days just to get one more soul. It's much easier to head to a bandit cave. rpeh •TCE 09:31, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

respawning[edit]

i killed adoring fan by saying to him "beat it" and he fell off a cliff ... does he respawns? if yes why isnt he respawns for me? — Unsigned comment by 46.117.9.67 (talk) on 5 July 2011

He should respawn back at the Arena in 3 in-game days. --Sencilia 14:20, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

I LOST HIM[edit]

I finally found Dive Rock, happy that I would be able to kill him there, and I lost him in the wilderness! I have waited 6+ days and he hasn't come back. He was following me from the Inn of Ill Omen and I lost him along the path to Bravil. I have gone up and down the path and I haven't seen him yet. Any helpful idea's? Please? — Unsigned comment by 24.78.171.193 (talk) at 08:56 on 7 September 2011 (UTC)

If he died, he should respawn back at the Arena after 3 game days or so. If not, then I don't know. If you have the PC version of the game, you should be able to teleport yourself to him (or something like that) using the console commands. --Sencilia 13:34, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Respawn eyes purple?[edit]

I had a saved file right before I killed him, and after I killed him I had some fun with the Staff of Worms and after I loaded the saved file his eyes were the purple color that are shown on the reaninmated person's face. Is this just a glitch? — Unsigned comment by 24.78.171.193 (talk) at 04:46 on 25 September 2011 (GMT)

Yes, it's a glitch. It's only temporarily, and will go away eventually (probably if you leave the cell or shut down the game). --Legoless 22:36, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Pickpocket?[edit]

Adoring Fan wants to play Skyrim![edit]

I attacked him and chased him to Skyrim, and he kept running of course. I haven't seen him respawn, thank goodness. Should it be noted on the article that if you beat him and chase him to another province you're rid of him forever?---Stranger 02:21, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Well did you actually kill him? ~ Dwarfmp 02:23, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
No, I just injured him.---Stranger 02:26, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
He can't respawn if he's not dead, he's still out there. So any place you scare him away to will work, not solely the Skyrim border. So it shouldn't be noted ~ Dwarfmp 02:30, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
Okay---Stranger 02:33, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Adoring Fans in the aisles... er... Isles[edit]

The Adoring Fan will not follow you to the Shivering Isles, although he will reappear in the Realm if you killed him previously. If this happens, he will experience the I HAVE NO GREETING glitch. If he dies in the Shivering Isles, he will reappear in Cyrodiil. This will reset his dialogue.

I tried recreating this several times, but although he respawned in Cyrodiil I inevitably found him waiting by the Door in Niben Bay, unable to follow into the Isles, so I threw a verification template tag on it. Kivan 14:02, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

The Adoring War Hero?[edit]

Um I was fighting the final war, and for me it took six days to finish,I like to be slow in the game.Well anyways, I pickpocketed him and gave him armor and stuff to fight, but he died in war, 3 days later, he was at my near-by house waiting, with everything I gave him. Is that normal?

Actually, yes and no. One, he normally respawns, so that's normal. Two, however, he wasn't supposed to keep the stuff you gave him. His inventory was supposed to reset on his respawn, however. Kill him again, and then wait 3 days, and tell us what happened.--I a m g o o f b a l l--Need Something? Drop by on my Talk Page. What I've done for this site. 05:31, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

The Adoring Fan reference in Cicero's journal[edit]

I see there's been some confusion on this issue so hopefully I can explain it a bit. The entry gets deleted every time someone else re-adds it because the person who deletes it thinks Cicero IS the adoring fan, which isn't the case and wasn't mentioned when it was first added. It explicitly stated it was just a reference to him. Cicero writes how he pretended to be an adoring fan to the grand champion of the Arena in Cyrodiil when he was younger and proceeded to assassinate the champion when they went out adventuring. Since it's a common gag for fans to torture the Adoring Fan in Oblivion, I thought it was a hilarious easter egg that was worth adding. The info might not belong on here and rather on the Easter Egg page; but then you should move the information, not just delete it. I'm not sure why all the confusion started because the link to the journal volume in question was provided, so I guess those who deleted it did not take the time to read it. I hope I cleared it up a bit. Feel free to do with this information whatever you think works best. — Unsigned comment by 84.107.48.78 (talk) 04:42, 10th April 2013

The reference is already documented at Elder Scrolls Historical References, as stated in the edit summary in which I removed the information. eshetalk 16:54, 10 April 2013 (GMT)

Trapping him in plane of Oblivion[edit]

So if you want to permanently remove him from the game, and you're feeling particularly evil, all you have to do is get him to follow you through an Oblivion Gate and then stop him from reaching Sigillum Sanguis before you remove the stone? How is this done? I mean the only way I can think of would be to clear a room of enemies then paralyze him (or tell him to wait) then run for it. — Unsigned comment by 98.28.235.254 (talk) at 03:49 on 18 May 2017‎

You do not have to kill a single enemy to close a gate, allowing to run through each area ignoring the enemies. Doing this means you will reach the centre before he joins you. The alternative would be to kill all the enemies then backtrack to the start and run through an empty plane; that would allow you to loot the enemies and containers as well.
