still, you can use sneak/invisiblity to get to the ruin entrance by circling the rins from southern side and cut out Falcar's escape route. He won't engage in fight with you, running to the ruin, so if you manage to land a single well poisoned arrow at him, you'll save a lot of work. You'll also start cursing the invisible walls around Cyrodiil if you haven't done so yet.

I don't know if anyone else has had this happen, but I sneaked around behind the ruins on the left and waited for Falcar to run back. I was wearing the Ring of Khajiiti (35% chameleon) and even though I attacked him face to face it still counted as murder. Also, even after the ambushers attacked the group of necromancers the music was still exploration and not battle. I don't think I technically took part in that battle at all. I eventually settled on pick-pocketing the right instead, (the game counted the theft against me!) and then when the battle was over the one remaining paladin ran straight past me into the ruin, apparently doing his best to take out Falcar, even though I already had the soul-gem. Probably a bug.

[edit] Cleanup

The Notes section here is.... extraordinary. All the information seems relative and arbitrary. It needs to be put into context; Faclar's health, the other NPCs - all of this is leveled. Can anybody do anything to help clean this up? I don't have a character close enough at the moment. --RpehTCE 14:00, 21 October 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Easiest Method

The easiest method is slightly covered in here. Simply sneak with full cammo, and steal the gem from him. You can optionally keep him alive this way too, but he has a fire enchanted dagger you may want to add to your armoury.

Seconded. I tried this myself just now. For anyone else who may want to try it, I did kill Falcar after I pickpocketed the gem from him, and I don't know if it would have made any difference if I hadn't (I doubt it). My char's relevant stats at the time were:
  • Agility = 72
  • Speed = 50
  • Luck = 50
  • Sneak = 75
  • Security = 100
  • 100% chameleon at the time I rushed him (in sneak mode) and picked his pocket.
I did hit him with a paralyze-poisoned blade before I pickpocketed him. -- Cheats-Like-Crazy 04:31, 10 January 2008 (EST)

[edit] Observation

If you hit the necromancers and Falcar with an area Fury spell, not only will they comically turn on each other, but Falcar's flight back to the ruin will be much slower - he'll stop every few steps to be Furious, then keep running.

[edit] Rares in the mission

Im a collecter of rare items and im wondering if its possible to duplicate the colossal black soul gem, or use staff of corruption on falcar then kill both of them to get 2 colossal black soul gems *using ps3 console*

Actually, you can. Whilst I find it most annoying, the colossal black soul gem gets stuck in your inventory after you get it from Hannibal Traven's body. Gratz

[edit] what is the purpose of falcar's key?

the wiki article mentions to get the key from falcar, but i don't see what the point is. could someone point it out for me?

That's a very good question... The Keys page says that his key opens his door in the Cheydinhal Mages Guild, a door you have already have to open to get this far into the quest line. Given this, I've removed the comments about the key from this article. Thanks! –RpehTCE 04:53, 22 February 2008 (EST)

[edit] Notes Cleanup

I have noticed that parts of the page seem to repeat information that has already been given, should these be deleted or are they needed for some reason?

[edit] No Battlemages

I've done the Ambush quest twice, and neither time were there any Battlemages at Silorn when I arrived. My first Journal Entry after arriving and taking a few steps was the stage 30 message, "I have been discovered by the Necromancers . . ." I never saw Battlemages anywhere in the ruins, or outside after killing Falcar and getting the Black Soul Gem, or back at the Arcane U reporting to Traven.

I'm a brand new editor here and am unsure what to do. Is it appropriate to simply add a "Note" to the article to the effect that such a thing might happen? I'm using the PS3 console, and for all I know this oddity is PS3-specific or there was some local bug with my game.

I've actually had the same thing happen the other day, althought it didn't really cause any problems for the quest or the Mannimarco one.

[edit] Sheogorath's Staff

I recently attempted using this on Falcar & co to get into a better position once they are in the open, however falcar merely runs back to the entrance of silorn. Has anyone else had this happen, or know if it's a bug/intentional? Alphaman 01:08, 3 August 2008 (EDT) Alphaman

Well Shivering Isles was made awhile after Oblivion, so perhaps Falcar...wait....isn't there a Falcar in Morrowind? You find his ring upon first starting the game?.....meh....anywhoo, perhaps Falcar wasn't properly programmed to respond to the Staff of Sheogorath. Then again, I'm not familiar with scripts and the construction kit, so yeah...only my opinion. DaedryonTCE 01:16, 3 August 2008 (EDT)
Except that the staff works elsewhere in the main game, and it even worked on the necromancers/mages surrounding him when I used it. He was the only npc to move afterwards (and it did clearly hit him, the effect's aura showed up on him like any other magic).AlphamanT
