If you take Martin and Jauffre to Chorral with you before going to Cloudtop, and pass Eugal Belette in the street, they will kill him right in front of the guards and no foul. I had no idea what was going on til I searched his house later and found his mythic dawn paraphenalia. --Pumpboy1

In the XBox version of Oblivion, I had the same thing happen as Pumpboy1: I wandered down the street with Jauffre and Martin in tow, and they attacked (or were attacked by) Eugal. After killing him, we went into his house, and into the basement, and... weird. There's some kind of bugged lighting down there, in the shape of giant yellow triangles with coffin-shaped dark patches in the middle. Can anyone explain this? --TheRayven

I can't explain the lighting (I'll take a look when I get the chance), but the information about Eugal Belette is interesting. It might be worth investigating what happens if you go to other cities with them - will the other Mythic Dawn sleepers also come out of the woodwork? That'd be worth adding to the main page. --RpehTalk 04:38, 10 July 2007 (EDT)
It looks fine on the PC version. There are a lot of candles down there plus the odd lantern, but no giant yellow triangles. Just an XBox thing, perhaps? --RpehTalk 13:51, 10 July 2007 (EDT)
As silly as it sounds, I'll get my camera and take some pictures of my TV to illustrate the sheer weirdness. I crawled over every inch of the basement looking for some explanation for the coffin-shaped shadows (I'd assumed he was a vampire at first), but there really doesn't appear to be any reason for it. As for dragging Martin and Jauffre around to see if other Sleepers react, I'll give that a shot as well. Also, and I'll double-check this, but it seems Martin and Jauffre attack first; I reloaded after accidentally angering Jauffre, and when I found Eugal in the tavern, they ran over and started beating on him where he sat. --TheRayven
It took me a while to remember what your lighting problems reminded me of, but I finally tracked it down: Oblivion:Glitches#Broken Candles. So it's a semi-known issue that is specific to the candles in Eugal Belette's basement. And it sounds like there isn't really any fix (other than uninstalling patches, which I really doubt makes sense just to get rid of a graphical glitch that occurs in one place). There probably should be some mention of this in the main article, but I might bug Kivan first (who posted the glitch explanation) to try to understand the glitch a bit better first. --NepheleTalk 20:16, 10 July 2007 (EDT)
After reading the linked description of the Broken Candles glitch, that does seem to be exactly the problem occurring here. Of course, the 'problem' is rather minor, as its location is fairly irrelevant; the only thing worthwhile in the whole house is a skill book, and that's not even obscured by the graphical error. I took a picture and will insert it into the Glitches section to illustrate the problem, then see if I can get Martin and Jauffre into brawls with other Sleepers. --TheRayven 02:14, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
Oops; it appears I can't edit the Glitches page to add it. Nevertheless, here's the photo. I'm contemplating adding this to Eugal's page itself; any objections? Should I add a sub-section to his page, or just a single-sentence link to the glitch and image for reference? --TheRayven 02:37, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
You can add it to the Glitches/Proposed page. Now I see what you meant about bugged candles! --RpehTalk 03:49, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Nephele had some questions about the broken candles....

So as I understand it, the glitch only appears if you install either of the 1.2 patches (i.e., 1.2.0214 or 1.2.0416); and, more to the point, it's not fixed by any currently available patches (or at least no currently available Xbox patches)?

Correct on both. The candlestick (CandlestickFloor01DarkFake) is the only (used) mesh in the game that is incorrect. The object is looking for the mesh file in the wrong path (it was in the Clutter folder instead of where it was supposed to be.) Before the v1.2 patch, the engine would look in Clutter if it couldn't find a missing mesh and use it if it was there. Post-patch, it doesn't do this anymore.

Does this only affect the candles in Eugal Belette's basement? If that's the only place using those candles, then where/what are the forts that the original editor was having problems with?

Other than the four instances in Eugal Belette's basement, there are two in Fort Hastrel, one in Fort Roebeck and two in Fort Redman. The remaining instances are in cells that are not accessible without console commands. Kivan 16:32, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for the info, Kivan! --TheRayven 16:45, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

an interesting note, I just found him dead in the street without even starting the main quest other than walking past weynon priory and accidentally triggering the "I should find Jaufre" message box(i am running some mods (OOO,MMM,OMG,and others) but none that should touch the mythic dawn) -wardhali

[edit] Place of Attack

I have seen Eugal Belette attack twice from the battlements above the main gate. The first time, he jumped down, attacked a guard and then came after me. I took him down with my Claymore, the second time, he drew his weapon on the battlemwnts, and alerted the guards. They both drew their swords and looked up, but he was stuuck on the edge or something. Then, after a few seconds, Belette freed himself and jumped down, but was killed when he landed.

It's just random so not appropriate on the main page. He'll attack on sight so the place it happens is entirely dependent on where he is when he first sees you. --RpehTalk 13:12, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Early Death

On my first trip into Chorral, shortly after I had delivered the amulet but before I had gone to Kvatch, a guard killed Eugal Belette at the entrance to city for no reason at all. Since then, every time I enter a new city, I can hear someone screaming and a fight going on with what sounds like a guard, but no matter where I look I can't find the source of the commotion. Any idea what's going on? -Guest—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.125.84.80 (talkcontribs) on 20 June 2009.

You are aware that Eugal Belette is a Mythic Dawn member? That's probably what the fight was about. Presumably, the fights in the other cities are between the guards and a Mythic Dawn member as well. As to why it happens, I have no idea. It could be that Eugal and the others were trying to attack to you but the guards got to them first. Wolok gro-Barok 08:39, 20 June 2009 (EDT)
