I removed this (but kept it here in case anyone disagrees):

  • The Finger of the Mountain is apparently designed to be useless (it requires thousands of magicka points to cast just once, which is silly). It's up to you if you still want to go through with the second part of the quest.

The above only applies if you do the quest with a high level character. Furthermore, magicka cost is dependent on skill level. --Goit 05:43, 15 April 2006 (EDT)

I'm not even sure if they even intended it to be useful. For one thing, the spell's cost is set to double the normal auto-calculate rate. --Cloud Tiamat

[edit] Is there a way to make a "Fingers of the mountain" search show this page at the top?

It does show as Chorrol Recommendation several entries down the results list. I'm a beginner at wiki editing so I wouldn't know how to do do this.

[edit] Fingers!

Here, I collected the data for the different levels for the spell. I dont know how to make a table, so can someone else please? This is original research done by me. All magicka costs are based on a level 100 Desruction aility.

1-4 Shock damage 6 pts in 5 feet, 2 cost
5-9 Shock damage 20 pts in 5 feet, 15 cost
10-14 Shock damage 40 pts in 5 feet, 42 cost
15-19 Shock damage 90 pts in 5 feet, 143 cost
20-25 Shock damage 140 pts in 5 feet, 277 cost
26+ Shock damage 200 pts in 10 feet, 710 cost
  • Note that I basically had to turn on God Mode in order to survive level 20 and up. The last three stages are pretty impossible to get I guess, unless you have shock resitance. My Breton with mundane ring survived, but my horse was fried. ALl those people that say fingers of the mountain need 7kish magicka to cast are cheaters, becuase only way you get THAT version is by using console. Although spells are all called the same, the player gets his own Fingers of the Mountain, while the magical stone has more powerful versions with the same name. The version that does 200 damage in 100 feet or some nonsense is only used by the stone, which killed my horse. Actually, by breton with Mage sign wears 5 pieces of armor with 2 rings and an amulet that I enchanted with Sigil Stones that fortify magicka. He can BARELY cast fingers, but proves he is quite a powerful guy. A high elf with atronach can probably just cast a spell to fortify magica, use the Mages doomsonte ability, and then only needs a few enchanted pieces of armor to cast fingers. Its not an impossible spell like everyone says, especially since those uber powerful versions are only used by the stone. However, a high elf probably wouldnt survive the strike from the stone to get the power version of the spell. Unless they cast a resist magicka 100% spell for just a second or two.

[edit] Ego

I too agree it's pretty useless, although not impossible to cast. I believe it's meant as a milestone for mage's to boost their ego. I think it was intended for something to boast about, like "My mage can cast fingers of the mountain!". Like me, I'll say it right now, MY MAGE CAN CAST FINGERS OF THE MOUNTAIN! ( The most powerful version of course ). Just like in morrowind people would boast if they could defeat Vivec at level one, being able to cast this spell is just meant to make you look cool.--ChristensenCT 13:56, 22 May 2006 (EDT)

[edit] Unable to finish this quest

Hey guys, i guess i didn't really follow the walkthrough. I got the fingers of the mountain book from cloud top, then returned it to Teekeus. He took it away to his chest and i told Earana that i gave it to Teekeus. So i took the book back from Teekeeus's chest and gave it to Earana, waited for a day, got my "Earana's notes" and tried to get the fingers of the mountain book back from her room, but that didn't work. Then i went ahead and pickpocketed the book off her but Teekeus won't accept it (well...he doesn't even notice it in the dialog). Does this mean i have to complete the second part of the quest first? And truly all i want is my recommendation.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.17.35.80 (talkcontribs).

You already have the recommendation. You got it when you first gave the book to Teekeeus. The second part of the quest is optional. --Nephele 16:50, 23 November 2006 (EST)
I have the same problem, and I still have "Join the Mages Guild" quest marker pointing to Teekeeus. Is there a way to finish this quest? I've beaten it on another character. --Quik 19:02, 4 July 2007 (EDT)
Ignore the quest marker because it's wrong. As long as you have given the book to Teekeeus, you've completed the requirements as far as "Join the Mages Guild" is concerned. Other players have reported the same problem, but have found that if they just ignored the quest marker and completed the other recommendation quests they were then granted access to the Arcane University. --NepheleTalk 01:54, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

ive completed all of the reccomendations but still can access the arcane university. Help!!!!!!!!! 1.11.09. btw its for xbox 360.thnx

[edit] What gives you fame?

The |Fame=Fame page indicates you can earn up to 2 fame points for this quest -- I haven't done it, so what is the breakdown of fame points? --CharmSpell 22:13, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

I can only find one instance of the "modpcfame" command relating to this quest - you get it when you give the book to Teekeeus, whether you gave it to Earana first or not. The second part of the quest where you get the spell does not seem to give you any fame. It's possible that whoever said there were 2 fame points was mistaken? --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:23, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
Wait a minute - I found it, hidden in dialogue instead of the quest scripts - If you give the book to Earana first, I think you get an extra Fame point. Sneaky where they hide these things... --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:29, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

[edit] No corpse on Cloud Top.

Someone posted that sometimes the corpse wouldn't appear on Cloud Top. I believe that this is a conflict with another quest and additional research should be performed. I have done the quest 10 times (seperate characters) and the body has been there each time.

This is likely either an isolated incident, or a rare glitch. Either way, just doing the quest 10 times and not encountering this problem does not mean that it doesn't exist. --HMSVictoryTalk 14:25, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
Well I understand that, however, it's a start. I'm not sure which version of the game the person was playing so it may be related to that. If someone would be interested in helping me with this, that'd be great. Ocylith 21:53, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
The corpse is actually a container and not even a dead Creature/NPC. As containers don't disappear like bodies do, it is very unlikely this bug is true. --Timenn < talk > 09:29, 16 April 2008 (EDT)
Since that actually makes a lot of sense, and I think you may be correct, I guess this "problem" has been figured out. Ocylith 10:21, 16 April 2008 (EDT)

i just had this very problem, playing on game version 1.2.0416, did the theif's guild quest - picked up the unfriendly competetion quest, go fishing and the one with the shadowbanish wine - then delivered the amulet, went to chorrel, - got the killing fields quest and the separated at birth - then left chorrol and went west along the road all the way to the end of it, then went south until i got to the infested mine, there was what seemed to be an empty cell right next to it, only some rocks etc floating in the air. - from there i went to the first camp where you get the first item for the orrery quest. - then headed for kvatch, picked up the sunken one quest on the way, (havent finished the orrery or the sunken one quest). got to kvatch closed the gate etc. tp with martin to the priory, finished the killing fields. - tp'ed to cloudruler. then tp'ed to chorrol, picked up the reward sword form the killing fields quest. picked up the quest shadow over hackdirt. can't remember if i joined the fighters and mages guild the first time i was in town or waited until i got back there again. went to cloud top and no corpse there.

the corpse just isnt there, turned of all the mods, still the same. started a new game, this time went straight there and now it is back.77.212.211.26 13:35, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

[edit] this is wrong!

i had the problem where i couldnt finish the fingers in the mountain quest too. i looked back at my completed quests menu and it was there. however it said i still had to talk to earana!! my quest pointer also pointed to the guy in the mage guild.

Solution: go to the gray mare and talk to earana. either agree or disagree to continue with fingers of the mountain, part 2.

SOLUTION TO ABOVE PROBLEM AND PROBLEM OF THE ANNOYING QUESTPOINTER.
Your quest pointer will still point to the mages guild guy, accept part 2, after talking to her the first time, disagree to help her and the quest marker will go away, thus ending the quest chain. -ArkAngel_X

[edit] Earana wont talk to me

All she says is "youre a bold little thing arent you" and the dialouge ends. What do i do? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 90.220.141.50 (talkcontribs) on 4 February 2009.

Your health is too low. She comes out with that line if your health is <150. Try healing yourself or perhaps use a Fortify Health spell. –RpehTCE 13:49, 4 February 2009 (EST)

[edit] Double Win

Author Edit: I just saw this is already listed as a bug.

I managed to give the book to both Earana and Teekius. This is what I did: I retrieved the book from Cloud Top and went to see Earana while she was sleeping. I stood outside her closed door and waited for her to wake up and come out. As soon as the door opened, I spoke with her (as she stood in the doorway). I handed over the book and she made a move to go back in. Just as the door started to close, I ran forward and managed to get inside with her. Her character just stood there, facing the door, so I was able to crouch behind her unnoticed and steal the book from the chest on the ground. I thought Earana would be furious with me, but when I spoke with her, she acted as though she still had the book. I then high-tailed it to Teekius and gave him the book. When I went back to see Earana 24 hours later, she gave me her notes and the quest continued. BlueCat 12:51, 25 April 2009 (EDT)-BlueCatTalk

[edit] Avoiding the lightning

User 78.105.112.9 recently added the following: If you do not have nor do not want to invest in some spell resistance or protection; you can simply position yourself next to one of the outer pillars and then fire the shock spell. Assuming it is not a touch you will have time to strafe behind the pillar you are standing next to, forcing the centre pillar's counter-attack to hit the pillar instead of you.

I tried this, but no matter where I stood or which pillar I stood behind, I always got struck by the lightning. Can anybody else confirm that it is actually avoidable? --Gaebrial 07:04, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] STEPS TO KEEPING THE BOOK *AND* REMOVING THE STOLEN FLAG (moved from article)

The following was added to the main article by 68.6.188.57 on October 4, 2009.

    • 1. Get the book.
    • 2. Give the book to Teekeeus- Give it to him while he is sleeping so that he will put it straight into his chest.
    • 3. Take the book from the chest. At this point the "Join the mage's guild" quest is still marked in Chorral.
    • 4. Give the book to Earana. She will tell you to wait the "few" days so she can translate it.
    • 5. Wait 24 hours. Wait 24 hours again.
    • 6. If Earana is not at the Grey Mare, she is by the mages guild and you have to pick pocket the book from her. Also, you need to talk to her so she will give you the "shock the pillar" insructions.
    • 7. (At this point I had to go to skingrad to buy a shock spell, and return to cloud top.)Shock the pillar and get the 'finger of the mountain' spell.
    • 8. Now, you can freely drop the book as it is no longer a quest item, but it is still flagged as "stolen." Go to the burned body and place the book in it's inventory, and leave the inventory screen.
    • 9. Re-open the burned body's inventory and there the book will be, free of any stolen flags, as it was when you first got it. The flag does not return. We all win!

NOTES

I did this the first time I played. If you follow the steps exactly I know that it works because I had to do it all over again to make this tutorial. I couldn't remember exactly how I did it, so I made a bunch of mistakes and kept having to reload.

The "join the mages guild" quest will no longer be flagged for Chorral. Also, Teekeus never mentions the book again, and you get into the mages guild just fine.

The "cloning" trick with scrolls works on it now, and the book "weighs" 2 and is still worth zero in coins. I now own 20 "Finger of the mountain" books.

Other Notes- I tried hitting my horse with the lightning from the pillar. Nothing happens, he doesn't get quicker or anything like the way shrines cause.

This looks pretty conclusive to me. If there are no objections, I'll remove the tag tomorrow (for the sake of consensus). The single note should suffice for those that wish to repeat the process. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 00:51, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
I accidentally patrolled this edit, intending to undo it, before reading what was going on here. For now, I've left it in and touched up the instructions somewhat. If it fails verification or for whatever other reason, it shouldn't be on the page, you can always remove it. If you can't verify it, just re-add the VN tag and I'll try to look into it myself tomorrow. —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 10:03, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

when i was doing the fingers of the mountain i gave it to earana and then took it from her and gave it to teekeess and then took the quest away
