Name Issue[edit]

Is her name Malvulis or Malvulius? There's an inconsistency in the info text of this page, and there's also a Oblivion:First_Mate_Malvulius page that redirects to this page.--Quill 19:08, 10 February 2008 (EST)

The NPC's name is "First Mate Malvulis" which is why the page is named "First Mate Malvulis." If you look through the page's history you can see that originally an editor mistakenly created the page at "First Mate Malvulius" but the page was moved when the spelling error was recognized. That's why a redirect still exists at First Mate Malvulius: when you move a page, the old page is automatically turned into a redirect to the new page name. However, the game never uses the Malvulius name and therefore the redirect should be deleted at this point (trying to keep redirects for every reader's possible misspelling of every name in the game is impossible and pointless; we generally only keep redirects when the game uses the misspelled version, for example in a dialogue). --NepheleTalk 19:34, 10 February 2008 (EST)
Well, that's one comprehensive answer! Thanks for making this clear.--Quill 09:32, 11 February 2008 (EST)

Respawn?[edit]

It's become apparent that once killed the First Mate does not respawn. However, what about the generic pirates? She was killed a while ago in my game and hasn't come back, and I thought that all the pirates died along with her. Today I went to clean the ship out of all the goods that had any monetary value and found myself fighting a Nord pirate, a Breton pirate, a Redguard pirate, and an Argonian pirate. I've seen the Redguard and Breton up top before with the First Mate on more than one character, and I can't remember if they were killed on my current character or not. I've also never seen an Argonian or Nord pirate. So does anyone know if these pirates respawn? --Mole126Talk 11:31, 2 March 2008 (EST)

They don't respawn. There's a Breton and Redguard wandering around the dock at the start of the game. An Imperial and Redguard appear on the mid-deck at the start of the DB Quest A Watery Grave and an Argonian and Breton appear at some point although I'm not sure exactly when. –RpehTCE 11:59, 2 March 2008 (EST)

The Argonian and Breton spawn after killing the Captian in the DB quest A Watery Grave.Miceypoo@aol.com — Unsigned comment by 66.124.247.197 (talk)

Avoiding murder?[edit]

I just wonder if it's possible to enter the ship, exit and return to the dock (where the pirates and Malvulis are standing) without being attacked? I just want to get the Nirnroot in the captain's cabin. Thanks! SwedishBerzerker at youtube.com 09:41, 26 April 2009 (EDT)

Wait until its dark, sneak and jump from the dock onto the balcony outside the captain's cabin. Pick the lock, steal the Nirnroot and swim away. The captain will be sleeping after midnight. --SerCenKing Talk 09:46, 26 April 2009 (EDT)

Attacked because of jumping?[edit]

I know she's supposed to attack when you go on the ship, but she recently attacked me for no discernible reason. I had recently acquired the dodge roll from journeyman acrobatics and was practicing getting around with it. I passed by the ship (not even close to it) and she and her pirate buddies suddenly attacked me. I ended up leading the pirates a fair distance away (trying to hit them with a bow and not get hit) and when I came back she was saying something about jumping before she resumed attacking me and I killed her. I may have been imagining this but I'm pretty sure she mentioned jumping. anyone care to test this? 24.196.25.8 00:23, 23 May 2009 (EDT)

None of her unique dialogue mentions jumping, so it's either a stock phrase or you misheard. –RpehTCE 07:43, 23 May 2009 (EDT)

Free to murder[edit]

After a little experimentation it seems you can start a fight with the pirates and not get in trouble, even the guard will join in, helping you kill them all. Any idea why this happens? — Unsigned comment by 88.109.42.242 (talk) on 8 October 2009

The pirates have a low Responsiblity, they are usually considered to be evil. The guards will likely like you more and help you instead of them. --Timenn-<talk> 14:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Malivulis Shanty[edit]

You do know there is a Redguard called Cyrus. He is a member of the Blades the one who meets Jauffre and Martin with the words 'Grandmaster is this.....'. — Unsigned comment by 89.240.174.236 (talk) on 15 April 2010

No way! --SerCenKing Talk 11:01, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
