Moving Into His House[edit]

Spoilers may follow, stop reading now if you don't want to read them...

Once the guards kill Glarthir (provided you show them the note), you take his key and loot his house. The gold you get there is great, but I have a different question.

Since you now have the key to a house where the owner is now dead, can you safely keep stuff there to lighten your load?

Thanks! --Harry349 20:43, 7 January 2007 (EST)

Short answer: nope. Long answer: You need to purchase a house yourself to safely store items. Most chests and other containers throughout Oblivion will periodically reset themselves, causing anything that was left there to disappear. Using the construction set to look through the chests in Glarthir's house confirms that almost all of them are set to regularly respawn. If you really want to gamble, there is one cupboard on the second floor (the one that was initially locked and contained three weapons) that will not respawn. I'd recommend testing it first with something disposable... wait at least a week, come back and see if it's still there. --Nephele 22:55, 7 January 2007 (EST)
I'm pretty new to Oblivion, but what about just throwing stuff down all over the floor? It's not my place, I hadn't planned to keep it tidy.  ;) --Harry349 11:59, 8 January 2007 (EST)
I'm not totally sure on that one, but I know that things dropped on the floor in the street will eventually disappear, so I wouldn't be too confident about the house. --Ratwar 12:31, 8 January 2007 (EST)
I did this at one point, with Glarthir's house, because I didn't know any better, and if you wait long enough (probably about a week or so, I'd guess), when you go to take your items back out of the chests, they get marked as stolen. This appears to be an easy (maybe not completely reliable) way to achieve your independent thievery goals. --AnitsirK 20:41, 4 June 2007 (EDT)

Body Never Disappears[edit]

I have another question. I've played 3 different characters in Oblivion now, each to different degrees of completion. Each time Glarthir meets his demise (either because I killed him myself, or the guards took care of him) his body never disappears. The first time his body was near the east gate for months (real time). This time his body had been outside the church for about a week in real time. So now I have completed the Mage's guild and have the Staff of Worms. My plan, since Glarthir's body seems to persist, is to use him as a mule, hauling my loot around for me. This thought occurred to me because I was milking the Mehrune's Razor quest dungeon for as much loot as I could and had to make so many trips that the NPCs would respawn. If everything goes as I plan then I'll just drop my Glarthir inside the front door and ferry the loot to his dead body, then when I've finally completed the quest I'll reanimate him and have him haul it to the marketplace and sell the stuff off. Does anyone have any experience in regard to my idea above? McGrude 15:07, 22 July 2007 (EDT)

Rats. Glarthir neither fast travels with me, nor does he go through the Skingrad city gates. Oh well. At least I can use him to ferry loot between my house in Skingrad and the vendors. McGrude 16:08, 22 July 2007 (EDT)

synonyms for paranoid[edit]

Instead of Obsessive I was thinking paranoid but this being redundant. I began thinking of synonyms of Paranoid. I concluded with psychotic best matching his behavior because, an Obsessive person wouldn't generally be homicidal.--Most Honored Listener 18:07, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

I'm not going to launch into a full-fledged essay about this, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with saying Glarthir is obsessive. I'm not a doctor, but I do know that "obsessive" is a perfectly accurate description of his behavior. In any case, this is too nitpicky of a point to argue over. This is all valuable time that could be spent improving things that actually need to be improved. --Eshe 18:21, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Glarthir..stupid crazy man,.[edit]

This happened to me in the mission whodun it for the dark brother hood. I had avoided him up till this point and he was right near the door to summerset mannor. I heard him say hey you I need to talk to you so I booked it into to the mannor after I got the key. About three seconds later he appears in the mannor to talk to me and is now stuck in there after I finish the quest. I tried to give him the key so he could get out but its a quest item. Is this a xbox only bug? — Unsigned comment by 63.249.96.128 (talk) at 03:00 on 14 September 2007‎

I remember him following me INTO an Oblivion gate once when I was closing the Skingrad gate as part of Allies for Bruma. You can try using a Command spell and get him out. --Sundaroct131088 06:09, 30 September 2007 (EDT)
There's a bug involved with this house that prevents NPC's from leaving once they enter. I think this is on the GLitches page somewhere. I'm sure it has something to do with the NPC's in the Dark Brotherhood mission not being able to leave. What I usually do here is get the town guard to chase me in there and then there aren't any guards in Skingrad! Except for the ones at the castle.--Imperial Scum 00:47, 21 May 2008 (EDT)
Same thing happened with Amusei. You'll find a solution at the very bottom of this page. — Unsigned comment by ‎80.66.241.208 (talk) at 19:02 on 9 April 2010

Killed Outside a City[edit]

If you killl him outside a town his body will never disappear

This doesn't seem very likely to me... I know the bodies of essential characters don't disappear but Glarthir isn't essential, and surely the location doesn't matter. Thoughts? --RpehTCE 03:37, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

While the location almost certainly doesn't matter, could it be the fact that he is flagged as a 'quest item' be what is preventing his body from disappearing?--Gaebrial 12:13, 25 October 2007 (EDT)
Oh dear - that's what comes of trying to post before I've woken up properly. I meant Quest Item, and yes he is one of those, but his body definitely disappears inside the city so why would it be different outside? --RpehTCE 12:34, 25 October 2007 (EDT)
I wouldn't use the word definitely. I've got a game where his body remained for the rest of the game. After Glarthir being killed, I noticed his body was still there (inside the city) after several days. I moved it around several times after that (AoE spells) and his body still remained. A possible clue is that I didn't kill, or attack, him myself. The guards killed him. I have another game where I myself killed him, I could check if the body in that game disappeared. --Timenn 12:46, 25 October 2007 (EDT)
Yes, Glarthir is definitely one of those NPCs whose corpses never disappear. Prior Maborel, Jauffre, Brother Piner, The Mythic Dawn Assassins that attack Weynon Priory, Kurdan's Hunters, Alval Uvani, Eletta, Zahrasha and Irlav Jarol are the others. I've actually used Glarthir's corpse to store my items(all corpses are safe containers). --Sundar 09:25, 27 October 2007 (EDT)

() Is there a full list somewhere on this site? I know you at least missed Arnora. --Debatra 19:32, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

Okay, the body has definitely disappeared in my games but then I do run the Unofficial Oblivion Patch these days, which may have something to do with it. In any case, if the body doesn't disappear inside OR outside a city, is there really any point in keeping the statement there? --RpehTCE 09:31, 27 October 2007 (EDT)
I would alter the statement to a just a note that his body does not dissappear. Most bodies dissappear, but Glarthir's is an exception, so it wouldn't be trivial. --Timenn 15:49, 27 October 2007 (EDT)
Done. Thanks, everyone! --RpehTCE 04:00, 28 October 2007 (EDT)

Glarthir, the human lockpick[edit]

Things Required

  • 100 Acrobatics (really helps with this)
  • Permanent Bound Helmet, Gauntlets, Boots, Cuirass and Greaves, plus 2 rings (Weightlessness helps)
  • 7 Grand Soul Gems filled with Grand level souls. To easily obtain this, train to level 13, get Frostcrag spire, then soultrap and kill the Vault Guardians. Below level 13, their souls will be petty/lesser.
  • Enchant the bound armour and 2 rings with Fortify Acrobatics, the result will be "Fortify Acrobatics 10 pts". This should bring you up to 170 Acrobatics.
  • DO NOT BUY ROSETHORN HALL!
  • DO NOT INITIATE THE PARANOIA QUEST!

Ok, this is quite a neat trick, note, I did this on the XBOX 360. I walked into Skingrad, hadn't spoken to Glarthir, so basically, whenever he saw me, he'd say his line about needing to speak to me, and he'd follow me....everywhere....

I was messing about near Rosethorn Hall and I hopped up on the balcony of the house beside Rosethorn Hall on the right side, "Hammer and Tongs". From that balcony (you may have to slide along the edge until you can hop up), I hopped to the balcony of Rosethorn Hall.

Miraculously, Glarthir walked right into Rosethorn Hall, and came out onto the balcony. Turns out he unlocked the front door and balcony door, without a key. I was amazed because I did not own Rosethorn Hall and I did not have a key, and both doors were locked.

Because of Glarthir, I was able to freely walk about inside Rosethorn Hall and use it as a loot stash without having to purchase it.

If you meet all the requirements as listed above, feel free to try this. It's quite neat to see that Glarthir has in-game permissions that allow him to open "Needs a key" doors. ImmortalKaine 23:54, 16 January 2008 (EST)

Almost forgot to mention. Technically, the game thinks you are trespassing. You can't use the bed in the bedroom, but you can initiate the "The Rosethorn Cache" sidequest and obtain your reward this way. Glarthir may have trouble getting off the balcony, just walk inside the house and he should follow you and exit the house safely. ImmortalKaine 23:59, 16 January 2008 (EST)
Third note: I have not tested the 4-day-item-reset thing, to make sure that items dropped inside the not-yet-owned but unlocked-by-Glarthir Rosethorn Hall would or would not disappear, so until I check everything out, please do not attempt to store items, as there is a chance that the game could reset the house.....if that's even possible... Marukati Selectives?[edit]

Marukati...did i spell it right?

Ehmmm anyway i have a question... what hell is Marukati Selectives? — Unsigned comment by 85.139.13.34 (talk) at 19:48 on 10 March 2009

Read the complete version of Where Were You When the Dragon Broke. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk) (Deeds) 11:17, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
Just so you know, the Selective isn't found or mentioned inside the game, so whether they're considered canon is questionable, but they're interesting to think about. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk) (Deeds) 11:19, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

Schedule before quest?[edit]

Does he have a different schedule before you talk to him about the Paranoia quest? Seems to me, it's almost impossible to avoid him when you first enter Skingrad? Krusty 08:33, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

This isn't 100% sure, because I haven't checked in the CS, but I think that he's scripted to attempt conversation with you once you enter Skingrad. --SerCenKing 10:19, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
He's scripted to meet the player when he or she first comes to Skingrad, then assuming the quest is accepted, changes one aspect of his schedule, which is to wait behind the chapel from 10pm to 2am every night. If he ends up going on a killing spree there are several other schedules to take into account, but they aren't worth mentioning on this page as they're covered on the quest page instead. –RpehTCE 12:22, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
All right - since it's nearly impossible to avoid him (and because the quest is added without the option to say no), it must be his schedule during the quest that is relevant... Krusty 15:19, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

No Bounty for kill?[edit]

Surely this must've been because it was 12:30am behind the chapel... but I just killed Glarthir and got no bounty. Anybody else run into this? This would make him another good choice for starting the dark brotherhood quests.Sopor42 00:12, 24 March 2009 (EDT)

Odly enough, it's random. There was times where I blew him to kingdom-come in public, and never got a bounty, and sometimes I did. Maybe it depends on if you've activated the Paranoia quest or not. — Unsigned comment by 216.232.212.89 (talk) at 06:56 on 28 March 2009‎
It's not random and its not whether you've started his quest, it's whether he's attacking you -- Nacht 14:02, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Glarthir's Aggression[edit]

I pickpocketed Glarthir numerous times in order to raise my sneak skill. Eventually, after a few times being caught by him, he attacked me. In my experience, at least, he seems to have an aggression greater than 5. Is there a special scenario that causes Glarthir to eventually attack you? (In my case, I had completed Paranoia by killing all three targets, accepted the reward, and broke into his house later that night while sleeping. If his Aggression really is 5, then there must be some script that caused him to attack me.) 71.236.39.188 00:32, 14 May 2009 (EDT)

It is to do with disposition as well as agression. Being constantly caught pickpocketing him must have made his disposition towards you plument. --Kri-Dar 22:25, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
In my personal experience, if an actor's disposition is 0(cause of pickpocketing) and you unsheathe your weapon(which does -10 disposition) there is a chance they will attack you upon starting a conversation. — Unsigned comment by 80.66.241.208 (talk) at 19:09 on 9 April 2010‎

Glarthir's Cupboard[edit]

I completed Paranoia by saying that the first two people were not following him and that the last one was. When he told me to kill the person, I went and gave his note to a City Guard. After his death, I took his key and took everything of value from his house. I noticed that on the second floor, there is a cupboard containing three weapons, one of them an Iron War Axe. When I tried to take it, it appeared in my inventory, but didn't disappear from the cupboard. When I put it back, there was two of them. I kept taking them, eventually there was 120. Since then, I have been back several times, and there is always 120 no matter how many I take and the number only increases when I put them back. I am playing Oblivion on the PC. Has anyone else had this glitch?124.184.83.23 05:18, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Just tried it on the 360 GOTY Version. And it works. --Lucky the Cat Guy. 04:06, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Cupboard glitch[edit]

Concerning the recent vn tag, i cant remember for sure since its ages since i did this quest but isnt this the cupboard that glarthir gets an axe from if you choose not to help him, if so, there may be a script on the cupboard to ensure there is always an axe available for him. I cant double check this myself at the moment but it might be a possible explanation. --Volanaro Talk 15:23, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Oblivion AI wins again[edit]

During the paranoia quest, I was told to spy on toutious sexius. Being my good character at the time, I thought I'd watch him for a couple of seconds then tell Glarthir he was wrong. Now, when I found Toutious, he was bizarrely looking at Glarthir's house. I snook up behind him, and spied on him for a few minutes. A guard talked to me, Toutious found me, and began walking to the gate. Then, he stole a horse and rode down the Gold Coast. Despite my moral, I had to give in and tell Glarthir he was right.

Moral of the story? Glarthir ain't such a nutcase afterall. — Unsigned comment by 82.42.116.204 (talk) at 22:13 on 6 August 2009

It simply sounds like a case of coincidence. --Timenn-<talk> 08:12, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
I hate to break it to you but him staring at Glarthir's house is just a coincidence, him walking away is just part of his schedule, the horse isn't stolen, he rides the horse every day and he wasn't spying on Glarthir. Guess you murdered him for no reason :P --Nacht 14:11, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Glarthir Bugs[edit]

Make sure you talk to Glarthir before finnishing the Dark Brotherhood quest Whodunit? If you are inside Summitmist Manor, Glarthir may seek you out inside and get stuck there. If this happens, you can just kill him to end the quest. Be sure to take his key and loot his hosue.— Unsigned comment by 66.82.162.10 (talk) at 00:28 on 23 December 2009‎

His Very Hard Cupboard.[edit]

so yeah, I looted his body for his key, and after ransacking his house, I would really like to know whats in his VeryHard copboard, and if it is worth spending hours trying to lockpick. (security level 13, yeah, newbie).--209.208.106.230 18:15, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

It's not even remotely worth it. There's a few iron weapons and that's it. It looks like it might have been intended for something to do with the Paranoia quest, based on its name in the Construction Set, but as far as I know, it's just an ordinary cupboard. One of them is actually a Fine Iron Mace, so if you're really low level, that might be of interest. You can skip the lock altogether, though, by getting the key from the basement. See Glarthir's Secret Key for details on the location. Robin Hoodtalk 19:36, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Temple Glitch[edit]

If I hadn't been wearing a "Life Detect" item, I would never have noticed that Glarthir was standing inside the Temple, probably right about where the altar would be, if the inside were "open" to the outside world. I waited for three 24 hour periods and he didn't move, until I toggled no-clipping and talked to him inside that "no zone". We went through the second conversation introducing me to the Paranoia quest (after he pulled me aside on the street, and the convo with Dion), and then he "warped" (as in he simply translocated, without walking from A to B) to the spot he SHOULD have been standing at midnight.

I think the quest may have been partially broken, because right after he warped to the correct location, he asked me whether or not Bernadette Peneles (with whom I may or may not have spoken to about Glarthir before this point, but then so had I with Toutius Sextius) was really following him, and after telling him that she wasn't, tasked me with tailing Sextius. I spoke with him AGAIN, and he gave me the correct "don't talk to me in public" speech, so the quest was back on track at this point. Predcon 19:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

How far will he tail you?[edit]

Do we know? Nutjob just followed me into Cursed Mine, picked up a Glass Warhammer, helped kill a bandit, and left. I avoided him well enough in Skingrad that the quest didn't start, and now he follows me all the way out here, assists, and doesn't say a word.98.70.69.213 02:11, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

if he takes care of things[edit]

Glarthur's Quest[edit]

Looking through this page, I was wondering if his Paranoia quest should be on another page, instead of on his NPC page, just to harmonize all of the NPC articles.--Grim765 23:11, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

I see where you're coming from, but the info is basically a list of all his dialogue, there's little detail on how to complete the quest. The Silencer speaksTalk 23:20, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Maybe include a bit about his Schizophrenia?[edit]

Hello, I'm a psychiatrist and couldn't help but notice that Glathir's behavior matches the positive symptoms of Paranoid Schizophrenia and/or psychosis. I'm just wondering whether or not this should be included in the article, as no doubt when designing the character Bethesda obviously had this in mind, as stated above his behavior is strongly schizophrenic and psychotic, plus the delusion that people are watching and conspiring against him is not uncommon in schizophrenic patients. Should this be mentioned, or is it not necessary? — Unsigned comment by Farenthor (talkcontribs) at 20:58 on 13 October 2013‎

I think the way we would handle this is to only include it in the article if an in-game source were to state he was suffering from a diagnosed mental disorder. Outside of this, it would be speculation on our part, as I would assume a mental health care professional such as you would understand ;) --Xyzzy Talk 02:51, 14 October 2013 (GMT)
Trust me, there's enough here for a diagnosis. But of course, having not met him I am forced to agree, even though he is quite clearly suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. However, you're the editors and I respect that. Thank you for your time. — Unsigned comment by Farenthor (talkcontribs) at 17:39 on 14 October 2013‎
Honestly, I think this article is well-written enough as is that stating that directly isn't really necessary, but I did want to point out that we do actually call him a paranoid schizophrenic on at least one article. Just figured I'd mention it. — ABCface 19:57, 14 October 2013 (GMT)

Can't Lie To Glarthir[edit]

Something that wasn't clear to me from the walkthrough is that you can't lie to Glarthir about killing people, the option simply doesn't show up in the dialog. Perhaps this is worth a mention? Gglazer (talk) 23:57, 31 May 2014 (GMT)

Gold at Glarthir's House?[edit]

The description of Glarthir's house (and a lot of other accounts elsewhere) suggest that there should be 800 gold found in one of the wastebaskets in his house. However, I have never found it and it does not show up in the CS either. My hunch is that the gold appears as a scripted event IF certain choices are made in the Paranoia quest (maybe Glarthir is scripted to place the gold in the basket at certain points along the quest). I'm not skilled enough to wade through the scripts in CS, but perhaps someone could investigate? Thanks! — Unsigned comment by 76.93.91.225 (talk) at 15:32 on 16 July 2023 (UTC)
