When I did this quest when I tried to leave I had been locked in! I couln't open the door to leave. It kept saying "locked you need a Key" meanwhile Henantier is going on and on about "It's time for you to leave" or "I have things to do" I loved that. Whut up wit dat?

I did this quest at level 19 and was awarded a Skeleton Key. Although, I already had one from another quest, so I got screwed, cuz it didn't actually give me a second one. Others have told me they did this quest at lower levels and got other things, so the exact reward seems to be level based.

A Skeleton Key wasn't actually given by the quest. You'll notice that if you drop your Skeleton Key (and some other quest items), then pick it back up, it will say "Skeleton Key Added." The actual reward was a scroll.
I don't think you got screwed with the skeleton key, because you lost all your stuff at the start of the quest, so now you get it back and the key is (for me) the most expensive thing in my inventory, it is added last, right before your rewards (I have only gotten scrolls).

I had umbra hotkeyed and for some reason I could still use it when in the dreamworld. Maybe all hotkeyed weapons are availible in the dreamworld?

Necrosis96: when i finished this quest at lvl11 i recieved Dominating Touch Tome, Electric Touch Tome, Frostbite Tome, 30% Guard Scroll, Minor Bound Armor Tome, and Water Breathing Tome. I was rather suprised at what i recieved :P

After finishing this quest, it no longer lets me equip my Boots of Springheel Jak - "You cannot equip this enchanted item right now". The reward for me (at L15) was a scroll of "Summon Skeleton Archer" - not really worth it! My only hotkeyed item to remain so was the Honorblade of Chorrol - so it seems there's a bug relating to quest items.

(moved from article) Note: Couldn't wear my Ring of the Vipereye after completing this quest, which isn't a good tradeoff for the scrolls Henantier gives you.

Sounds similar to the Sanguine quest bug. Any time you get stripped naked in this game like that, any quest (i.e. undroppable) items you were wearing cannot be put back on. Take a look though, you may find that the bonus provided by the ring is now permanently applied to your character, even though you're not wearing it anymore.

[edit] Another Bug and Note

Alright, you all know the bug in the arena, where you can fall through the right side wall when you first come out of the tunnel? You can simply walk through that wall here, even though it's not too useful. Also, one of the notes on the page says that you keep Umbra when you enter the Dreamworld. This is not true on a fully patched Xbox 360 version of the game.

[edit] Need to move this

The correct name for this page should be "Through a Nightmare, Darkly". (Note lower-case 'a'). There's already a page there, however. (Just a redirect.) I'd move this, but the redirect needs to be deleted first in order to preserve this page's history. Any admins want to take care of it? --TheRealLurlock 10:15, 15 August 2006 (EDT)

The game uses a capital 'A', despite what conventions may be, so I'm leaving things as is, just fixing the redirects (and turning down a chance to use those shiny new admin buttons!) --Nephele 13:00, 15 August 2006 (EDT)

[edit] Awesome quest

I loved this quest. The reward was pretty rubbish for me though, all I got was a charm spell tome. :(

[edit] More random trivia for you

Hey, it's Megan. I found this through a random google search, and hadn't realized anyone had translated the maps! FWIW, the word Hero was completely unintentional, and I had originally put my name in there as a spacer to get the blocks correctly laid out. I'd forgotten all about it, since I had done it in daedric lettering, and didn't notice my name was still in there. How embarrassing! It's awesome to see that people catch even the smallest of details! :) This is a nicely compiled info site - keep up the good work. :) Megan s 17:37, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Thanks for stopping by and sharing the inside info, Megan. It's always great to hear that we've caught the developers' attention :) --Nephele 01:38, 26 February 2007 (EST)

[edit] Bug

I found a bug where you attack the dude sleeping and he will stand up heal himself and run around but if you talk it says he's sound asleep.

[edit] A Nice Resolving Trick

If you jump up of one of those supports that connect the arena with the spectators, (just large blocks of concrete, next to where the minotaurs spawn), you can safely blast the minotaurs away with your staff :D Have fun mutilating those minotaurs, I know I did! --Logiccube 14:05, 27 April 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Glitch

  • I have oblivion on the xbox 360 and when i went into the test of resolve the gate was already closed before i could enter the arena and i hand no other saves so i have to start all over!- moved from article

[edit] Somewhat easy way to beat the Minotaurs on Hardest Difficulty

On the hardest difficulty it is almost impossible to beat the Minotaurs with mage characters and that 'jumping straight to the stone' trick has a very slim chance of success because not only will you need high enough acrobatics but you must also be able to survive a few hits. For a high level character who didn't pay attention to endurance this is impossible.

The trick is to enter the arena and as soon as the Minotaurs are released, run back into Henantier's room. Now this may take a few tries because sometimes, as soon as you enter the arena the gate closes behind you. So save before you enter. The Minotaurs will follow you into Henantier's room and Henantier will attack them. They will NEVER attack him until you you're dead but there's no spot in the room where they can't reach you. So run into one of the other challenges, preferably the Test of Perception because it's easier to get them killed there. They'll follow you and with enough luck one of the traps will push them into the void. You can then complete the Test of Perception and then reenter the Test of Resolve and the staircase will rise and you can get the sigil stone. This may sound tedious but trust me those who've played this on the Hardest difficulty will know how difficult this is. --Sundaroct131088 18:57, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Well, if you're sure about everything stated above, there's no sense in leaving it on the talk page. Feel free to add it in the appropriate section if you feel that it's information worth mentioning. SubtleCynicism 20:38, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

i only did it on normal difficulty but just use the staff in the room. it took like 3 hits each minotaur to kill them. was surprisingly easy

[edit] The Silence of the Dreamworld

In one play-through of this quest, I did find that my character's healing power (Blood of the North) did work within the Dreamworld, but none of the other Powers available could be used. Those other powers were Greater Powers (cast once a day) while the healing spell was a Lesser Power. I suspect that makes a difference. Can anyone correlate or verify?Dark Spark 20:38, 18 December 2007 (EST)

[edit] Possible bug?

I'm not entirely sure what this is about. It doesn't belong on the main article, but people might have something to say about it. I just didn't want it to get lost in case there was a legitimate question involved. --Eshetalk18:07, 14 February 2008 (EST)

When you go to the one perception and you do all the things to get there and you find a door isnt there and you cant get out. I have not yet found it yet. But i will infrm you if i did find it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.119.7.216 (talkcontribs).

[edit] Going to dreamworld in Skingrad

I went to my house in Skingrad to level up but when I slept I was in the Dreamworld, I wasn't even wearing the Amulet! Glitch?

[edit] Location of quest on map

User Caboose recently added this note to the article:

  • If you look at the world map while in the house, it shows you that you are near the bottom of the Great Forest, west from Faregyl inn

I removed it because I'm not sure it belongs on this page specifically. The described location appears to be the 'default' location for when you are 'off-map'. For example, if you go to Hawkhaven (coc testinghall and go through the door), you are shown on the world map at the same location (and you can fast-travel from Hawkhaven). This location wouldn't be at coordinates [0, 0], would it?

Having said that, I don't know if there are any other areas (apart from the dreamworld) that are accessible in the game (without using the console) where the location marker on the world map shows you at this location.

[edit] Infamy? How?

I don't understand how a player can get infamy if Henantier dies if Henantier can't die. Is he essential or not? Are there two versions of him, one essential and one non-essential? What gives? IWon'tFightUndead 18:22, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

That's a very good point. I imagine it was added after looking at the CS scripts without considering the game reality. I can't think of any way he could die so you may as well take it off. –RpehTCE 02:26, 30 April 2008 (EDT)
Roger that, done. =) IWon'tFightUndead 05:20, 30 April 2008 (EDT)

( what about quest stage 90? what are the consequences of killing him in his sleep?

It's impossible to do that because he's tagged as essential. That's the paradox, here. :-) IWon'tFightUndead 19:18, 14 May 2008 (EDT)
I think this needs to be tested in game, rather than relying on our interpretations of the scripts.
First, there are two versions of Henantier: the real world version (BaseID 0002CA35) and the dreamworld version (BaseID 0002CA37, who needs to be added to Henantier's page). Whether or not you gain infamy for the quest is irrelevant if you kill the dreamworld version: your character is also immediately killed, and you need to reload from a saved game.
Second, there's additional scripting for the real world version of Henantier in his script, HenantierScript, which specifies that if the player hits Henantier during the quest,.he will immediately die. Specifically, this happens for quest stages (stage>=10 and stage<90), and this bit of code triggers quest stage 90, where the quest ends with an infamy point. I've never tested in game what happens if the kill command is used on an essential character. I'd guess that the kill command wins, but the only way to be sure is if someone tests what happens when you're actually playing the game, and it doesn't seem from the previous discussion that in-game tests have been done yet.
In the meantime, I'm going to restore the information to the quest with a VN tag so that the page is added to the Pages Needing Verification category. --NepheleTalk 14:05, 23 May 2008 (EDT)
I've used the "kill" command on the Count of Skingrad. He just went unconscious and woke up as usual. IWon'tFightUndead 17:49, 23 May 2008 (EDT)
I've just spent some time testing this (when I should have been working!) and I finally managed to get the infamy, but it involves cheating. If you complete the Dreamworld sequence, get back to the real world, use the console to make Henantier non-essential and then kill him before he can talk to you, you get Quest Stage 90 and the infamy. Hitting Henantier while he's asleep or if he's causes an odd effect - he falls unconscious, wakes up, gets out of bed, heals himself then gets back into bed and goes back to sleep. You don't get the quest update. If you try to kill him when you get back from the Dreamworld and he's still essential you still don't get the update. In other words, to get the infamy he has to actually die while the quest is active. Since that can't happen, you can't get the infamy. I'm going to remove the infamy point and the VN tag. And then go back to work! –RpehTCE 04:46, 27 May 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Pop culture reference?

The title of the quest seems similar to "A Scanner Darkly," a book from 1977 and a movie from 2006. I haven't read or seen either of the two, so I don't know if they're similar content-wise.

Philip K Dick got the title from the Bible. See this, and the associated talk page. –RpehTCE 02:16, 18 May 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Keep the Dreamworld Amulet

After you finish and come back, as soon as you walk outside run to the right. After Hanintear is still walking to you shot him with a destruction spell. It says hes unconscious. But he will never get back up, disabling him from talking, thus preventing him from taking the amulet. The Dreamworld Amulet is Not bad because after you get in the real world, it will not silence you.

Notes:- If you press the action button(Left Click, or A) he will get back up! something you don't want to do.

-Shooting Hanintear will give you bounty.

-Soon he will go in his house and will not follow you until you enter his house

[edit] Glitch?

(moved from the article)
  • On some occasions, a glitch will occur that forces you into the dreamworld without the amulet equipped, even if you are on the other side of the map from Henantier. Very annoying if you are trying to sleep for a quest or level up.

I've moved this because it doesn't make clear when the "glitch" happens, whether it always happens or just sometimes or anything else. Perhaps the poster could provide more details? –RpehTCE 01:46, 12 July 2008 (EDT)
