Buried in the Past[edit]

If you haven't started the quest yet, and you approach him while he's spying on the pirate camp:

"Watch it! You'll give me away!

After barking at you, he will realize you're not a Renrijra pirate and offers to enlist you to help both him and his partner retrieve ancient relics:

"Back off, pirate! I'm not after your loot."
What are you talking about?
"Ah, you're not one of them. The Renrijra pirates are camped right on top of an Argonian ruin my partner and I came here to study.
Looks like they're excavating. Probably finding treasure…lots of treasure."
What are you after? Their loot?
"No. Well, not exactly. We want to search the ruins for ancient relics, and the pirates are in the way.
My partner, Looks-Under-Rocks, is up at our camp. He can tell you more about what we're after, if you're interested."
I'm interested.

If you accept the quest from Barvyn, he will ask you to speak to his partner and you can ask him more about the relics:

"We're hoping to put one over on these pirates before they sober up.
Go talk to my partner, Looks, up at the camp."
Tell me more about these artifacts.
"I don't know as much as Looks-Under-Rocks, but just look at these ruins! Xanmeers, the Argonians call them.
The lizards' ruins go way back, and this one's old, real old. Anything from that time must be valuable ... I mean, significant."

If you were directed by Looks-Under-Rocks to him, he will mention the need to find three stones of the map that will lead to the treasure:

"Those pirates are digging ... and drinking. We can take advantage of that."
Are you Barvyn? Your partner, Looks-Under-Rocks, sent me.
"About time he found someone to help. I'm glad you're here!
We've traveled all over Black Marsh searching for ancient Argonian relics. We finally get a solid lead, only to find pirates ahead of us with a treasure map."
If they have a map, they'll find the treasure.

You can ask a bit more about the relics:

"Maybe not. This 'map' is a stone puzzle in three pieces. When you find one piece, it finds the next. The pirates don't know what they've got, but my partner, Looks-Under-Rocks, does.
Get those pieces to us at the xanmeer, and we're in. And you'll get a cut."
Tell me more about these relics.
"I don't know as much as Looks-Under-Rocks, but just look at these ruins! Xanmeers, the Argonians call them.
The lizards' ruins go way back, and this one's old, real old. Anything from that time must be valuable ... I mean, significant."

If you speak to him after this:

"Those puzzle pieces are somewhere in the pirate camp.
I saw some of the pirates playing with one, tossing it around like a ball."

After you climb the xanmeer after using the red stone, Barvyn will be near the Sunscale Ruins entrance. Speaking to him before Looks-Under-Rocks:

"Those pirates aren't just digging. They're drinking, too. Good."

After the quest:

"This door won't budge! My partner might know how to open it, though. He's at the top of the xanmeer now."

The Fangs of Sithis[edit]

Looks-Under-Rocks will ask you to meet with Barvyn since you have the Hist key to the ruins, but Barvyn will be impatient to await Looks' further instructions:

"Curse it, why can't I pry this open?"
Is this the way in?
"I think so, but it's magically sealed. My tools are useless.
Whatever's in there must be really valuable. It must be significant."
Looks-Under-Rocks gave me this.
"This looks familiar. Looks drew something in one of his journals like this.
What is it?"
A Hist key. He made it by fitting the three puzzle stones together.
"Of course! I remember some of that old lizard's notes. This key won't just let us inside the xanmeer, once we're inside, it'll protect us from the traps and the xanmeer's guardians.
We can't wait any longer!"
We need to wait for Looks-Under-Rocks. He'll be with us shortly.
"I'll wait inside! I won't stick around to be captured by the Renrijra.
If you're smart, you'll follow me. Looks can catch up to us."

When the conversation ends, Barvyn will rush into the Sunscale Ruins:

Barvyn: "Can't wait any longer! I'm going in!"

Looks will run in from the east, calling out:

Looks-Under-Rocks: "Wait! Don't go in! Stop!"

When you enter Sunscale Ruins, you'll see him running into the obstacles while being influenced by the Fang:

Barvyn: "I hear the Fang. It calls to me."

When you eventually find him, he'll struggle to regain control but will turn hostile to you:

Barvyn: "No ... please ... I don't want to!"
Barvyn: "He lied! You want the Fang!"

Once he's subdued, you will have to convince him into giving you the Fang while he struggles to regain his sanity:

"The Fang crawled into my mind! What have I done? I can't stop it from gnawing my thoughts.
Help me!"
Give me the Fangs of Sithis!
"What are you going to do?
It's gnawing at my mind. If I give it to you, I'll go mad. I'll die!"
[Intimidate] Give me the Fangs, and I'll let you live.
"Here, take it! There's only one, I swear. I don't know where the other Fang is.
That thing burrowed into my mind. I never want to see it again. Never."
I'll take this to Looks-Under-Rocks.
You must give it to me, Barvyn, no matter the cost.
"It will burrow into your mind, the way it did mine, I only have one Fang, and look what it's done to me. Look what it's done! I can't live this way. Kill me. I beg you! Kill me now!"
[Intimidate] Give me the Fang and save yourself.
[same as above]
What? Give me the Fang, and you can go.
"You don't get it. If you take the Fang, I'll still be its thrall. It's stronger than me. It will make me do things—awful things! Please, have mercy. Take the Fang, but kill me, quickly!"
All right. I'll kill you, if it's the only way to save you.

If you're able to successfully intimidate Barvyn, he will live. You can speak to him before heading out of the ruins:

"I can't face my partner just yet.
Let me be for now. Let me be."

If you don't intimidate Barvyn into giving you the Fang, you will have to mercy kill him:

Barvyn: "It's gone. I'm free."

Pull the Last Fang[edit]

After retrieving the second Fang of Sithis, if you were able to save Barvyn, you will see him in another camp with Looks:

"I'm sorry for what happened in the ruins. Thank you for saving me from the Fang of Sithis.
I hope you have more luck with it than I did."

When the Shadowscales appear in the camp:

"Shadowscales…these guys are trouble. Be careful!"

After speaking to Sharava, he will consider suggesting giving the Fangs to the Shadowscales but then reconsider immediately:

"She wants the Fang? I say, give it to her! If it does to her what it did to me….
Wait, maybe that isn't such a good idea."

When the Aspect of Sithis appears after you refuse to surrender the Fangs, he will be amazed at the appearance of Sithis:

"Is that really Sithis? That's amazing…oh, wait, this is bad, isn't it?"

After the Aspect of Sithis disappears with the Shadowscales:

"You've got more guts than I have."

If you choose to give the Fangs to Sharava but haven't turned in the quest yet, he will say:

"I can't believe you did that…but you've done some pretty amazing things already."

After the quest regardless of the choice you made, he'll say:

"We'll have some tales to tell in Hatching Pools. I hope we see you there."

Notes[edit]

  • If Barvyn dies during The Fangs of Sithis, you cannot bring him back by abandoning the quest — at least, not after speaking to Looks-Under-Rocks. If you abandon and restart the quest, he will disappear after entering the ruins and will be considered dead at that point. This can be remedied if you abandoned the quest and walk away from Looks-Under-Rocks a considerable distance, then you log off the game and exit the game to let it reset completely.
