Approaching Thunder[edit]

After speaking with Housecarl Thorulf, she whispers to you to meet her outside.

Hallfrida: "Meet me outside."

Once outside she say the following.

Hallfrida: "Forgive my grandfather's behavior, he's not himself."

She will be waiting just outside the manor.

"I need help. Things haven't been normal for a long time."
What exactly is going on here?
"Grandfather always felt ill-treated by the Jarls. Lately he's become convinced they plot to kill him. Some poor man came with a message from Jarl Angjord. Grandfather accused him of being an assassin. He was beheaded."
What caused this change in him?
"I hate to say it, but. Thorulf has been grandfather's Housecarl since I was a girl. He always seemed cold. Aloof. Lately he's changed too."
Changed how?
"Lately he's been directing the household. Telling grandfather what to do. You saw it, didn't you? Grandfather didn't order you away. Thorulf did."
So why did you call me out here?
"I want to search Thorulf's room, but he keeps it locked. His guard, Sirkidur, holds the key. They both suspect me already. You, maybe, have a chance.
Get inside. If you find anything, meet me upstairs."

You can talk to her more and learn more about the Thane.

Could Unnvald's problems be related to the undead attacks?
"I don't think ... they did start about the same time, actually. But, no. This pass saw thousands of skirmishes between Nords and Dark Elves. The dead never risen before."
Then all undead are soldiers who fought over the pass?
"Yes, exactly. Even before the Red Mountain, the old Nedes invaded Chimer lands through this pass. Thousands have died here. Not all of them received Arkay's blessing. Though I'd expect — now that I think on it, that's odd."
What's odd?
"It's just ... I'd expect dead Nords and dead Elves to keep fighting each other. But the dead focus their attacks on Fullhelm. Sorry. What do I know about the undead, anyway?"
Why would the Jarls want to harm Thane Unnvald?
"I don't think they do. What grandfather did was a long time ago now. Before the formation of the Pact, he raided Morrowind. He'd gather warriors and sail off once or twice a year."
It sounds like he was good at it.
"One of the best. Warriors came from across Skyrim to sail with him. One year the Bards College sent a skald to chronicle the trip. That was the year Davon's Watch went under the axe."
Which the Jarls now find embarrassing.
"After the Pact signed, he was offered the Thanedom of Fullhelm. He didn't want it. It's too far from gran's grave, here. They said if he didn't go, he'd have to answer to the Tribunal Ordinators."
Could his suspicions be right? Could the Jarls be plotting to kill him?
"They don't need to kill him. No one sings the songs about him. The Ordinators banned them. The Jarls pulled down the statues in Riften and Windhelm. He's worse than dead. He's forgotten."
The Thane's your grandfather. Where are your parents?
"They died when I was very young. A Dark Elf raid on Riften. They hit our farm as they went through. All they left was ash."
Were you with Unnvald during the attack?
"Aye. He had another stead nearby. Just luck we weren't killed as well. He took up raiding the next spring. Gran and I made projects while he was away. Quilts, paintings, for when he returned. She kept a candle burning in the window every night."
He started raiding after your parents were killed?
"Yes, I - Don't say it. Please. I know what you're thinking. I couldn't bear to hear it. He's had a hard life. We all have."

After you search Thorulf's room, you report back to Hallfrida.

"Did you find anything?"
I found this pamphlet in his quarters.
"Ysmir's beard! "Arkay the Enemy?" A necromancer's tract! All these years, and Thorulf betrays us to the dead."
He must be a Worm Cultist.
"Yes. But who will believe us? My grandfather is wrapped around his little finger. The guards dare not stand against him, not if they want to keep their heads."
Is there any way we can expose them?
"No. I don't. Wait. Grandfather's sword. Bonebane!
When the dead first attacked, Thorulf led a group to retrieve it. Thorulf said the blade was destroyed, the men killed."
He led your guards into an ambush.
"The bastard. There's no way he could have destroyed it. It's been blessed by Arkay dozens of times.
Get Bonebane. It's at a monument to grandfather south of the fort. Bring it back, and you can prove Thorulf's a liar!"

The quest continues from here but you can talk to her more.

I'll return with the sword.
"You get that blade, and I'll see Thorulf hung from the highest point in the hall!"
What is this memorial/What's this memorial you spoke of?
"Back in the old days, before the Pact, Fort Virak sent necromancers up into the Rift. They thought to overwhelm us with undead.
Grandfather stood against them with Bonebane, and crushed the assault. His troops called it the Battle of the Bones."
Which side does the monument commemorate?
"Grandfather would tell you it was to honor everyone who died. But that's not true. You can't see it from Fullhelm, but you can certainly see it from Fort Virak.
That's no mistake. It's a big waggling finger in the enemy's eye."
Tell me more about Bonebane/Where did your Grandfather get a blade like that?
"He said he found the sword at the bottom of an ancient barrow. When he was younger, he was quite the adventurer.
He claims it was held by one of the Five Hundred, and that a beautiful ghost gave it him."
Do you believe him?
"Sort of? Grandfather likes to tell his stories. After the Battle of the Bones, he laid the sword in a chest and swore he'd never raise it again."

After you brought Bonebane, you can see her at the tail-end of a conversation with the Housecarl, who storms off after you arrive.

"While you were gone. Thorulf made a proposal. I told him what he could do with himself. Disgusting man!
What news?"
I have Bonebane, Hallfrida.
"I knew it! That lying skeever scum!
Come, we must show grandfather. I'm certain he will... wait. Is that Sjarakki?"

After Sjarakki reports to the Thane, you speak to Hallfrida one more time to finish the quest.

"I need to get my daggers."
What will we do about Thorulf?
"I'd slit his throat right now if I could, but there's no time ... not with the dead on our doorstep.
Deal with the dead. Stop the attack. After that, we'll expose Thorulf for what he is!"

The Thunder Breaks[edit]

After finishing the previous quest, the conversation continues.

"We'll deal with Thorulf later. In the meantime, I know our soldiers can hold the walls.
Still. Dark Elves defend. Nords attack."
What do you have in mind?
"The dead could throw themselves at the walls for weeks. What we need to do is push them back. Reopen the roads to Riften and Stonefalls.
Are you up for an assault? Show the men that Bonebane sings again!"
Just tell me what I need to do.
"Lead us. The soldiers here will all know Bonebane by sight, and they'll rally behind you.
When the undead attacked, we lost four guardposts in the first attack. Take them back. Show the men we won't be intimidated!"
Consider it done.

Speaking to her again:

"Take the four points around the fort. Once you raise the banner, soldiers will rally to help you."

After you defeat the enemy in the cellar, Hallfrida will run out from the manor keep.

Hallfrida: Help! Someone! It's grandfather!

She will stop outside the shed.

"Please! I couldn't stop him!"
What's happened?
"Thank Kyne you're back! While everyone was fighting off the attack. Thorulf raised a skeleton in the manor. He told grandfather the undead had broken in, that we were all going to die."
The Thane believed him?
"More than that. He went mad, raving! I think me might kill himself! Then Sjarakki came in and said you were turning back the skeletons in the shed. When Thorulf heard, he got wild-eyed and bolted."
The Thane's in the manor and Thorulf is fleeing?
"If we help grandpa, Thorulf will escape. But if we go after Thorulf, Unnvald will die!"
Thane Unnvald is inside the manor?
"Yes. His chamber is on the second floor, on the left side."
Where did Thorulf go?
"He fled down the southeast road. The one that goes past the old dragon temple at Forelhost."

Here you can make a choice of either going after Thorulf or saving Unnvald.

If you choose to help the Thane you'll find her just outside her grandfather's room, Alduin by her side.

"Grandfather is himself again. I can hear it in his voice. We owe you a great deal."
What will you do now, Hallfrida?
"Help my grandfather make things right. What Thorulf tried to destroy, we'll make stronger than ever!
As for that thieving, lying skeever … we'll see to him in due time."

If you chose to hunt down Thorulf you'll find her sitting on the throne:

"Were you able to catch Thorulf?"
Yes. He's dead now.
"Thorulf left this behind in his haste. A shard. This would be the shard of Wuuthrad you sought?"
Yes. The shards are magic. Could Thorulf have used it to weaken Thane Unvald's mind?
"All we know is my grandfather died because he listened to that skeever's lies.
I am Thane now. I will lead as my grandfather showed me long ago, before he left his senses. With a strong hand and sharp mind. I'll keep his legacy alive."
What of the shard?
"I'll keep it safe until you need it. You have my word as Thane of Fullhelm.
If not for you, we'd all be dead. It's a debt I can't repay, but you can start by keeping Bonebane. Use it like my grandfather did. Make these Worm Cult bastards bleed"

She becomes the thane after her grandfather's death. She can be found on his throne in the manor.

"We're in your debt. If you ever have need of blades, come speak to me. I guess I should find some more flowery, Thane-like speech, but that's not how grandfather raised me. Speak plain and honest, he said."
What will you do with your grandfather's body?
"I want him remembered as he was, before Housecarl Thorulf poisoned his mind. We'll burn him on a pyre at the memorial to the Battle of the Bones, his greatest victory.
He will be remembered, no matter how inconvenient the Jarls find it now. I'll see to it."

Securing the Pass[edit]

If you speak to her before speaking to Jorunn, she'll say:

"You again. We seem to meet in the worst places."

After accepting the quest, she'll say:

"We're counting on you to clear the route to the top of the mountain."

Stomping Sinmur[edit]

Defeat Sinmur and she'll say:

"I hope that's the last we ever see of Sinmur. Vigrod's been looking all over for you."

Speak with Vigrod and she'll tell you:

"Be sure to speak with King Jorunn before you leave. He's been asking for you."

After the quest:

"I hope I never hear the words "Worm Cult" ever again."
