Nandanath Thrice-Noble

Nandanath Thrice-Noble is a Redguard commoner who works at the Yokudan Heritage House in Hallin's Stand. If you speak to him, he'll tell you about the library and the history of Hallin's Stand.

Dialogue[edit]

During the Imperial occupation, he greets you as follows:

"Hold. You are no servant of the Empire, are you?
I beg you to forgive my caution, O wayfarer. The red devils have been watching us for days. I fear they will pounce upon us at any moment."

After the Imperials have been driven out of town:

"I received word the Imperials have been routed. I pray it is true.
Long and long have been the days since they arrived. Their spell-weavers have been watching us with envious eyes. If we had lost our library to those barbarians…."
What is this place?
"This is the Yokudan Heritage House. Some might call it a library, though it is far more than that.
This is where the ancient thoughts of Yokuda abide—whispering to us from beyond the Far Shores. Music, poetry, philosophy—all can be found here."
I'm sure the Mages Guild would be interested in this.
"By my father's head! To the dogs with that coterie of charlatans and heretics. They pretend to be scholars, but it is a fiction. To them, books are merely trophies. They regard their shelves as a hunter regards a mounted head.
Disgraceful."
How do you differ?
"For us, these books are like blood and flesh. Each and each is a beautiful thread in our cultural tapestry.
We do not trouble ourselves with useless trivia. You'll find no Dwemer machinery manuals here. This place is uniquely and purely Redguard."
Can you tell me anything about Hallin's Stand?
"If it is secret doors or hidden chambers you seek, you must look elsewhere. We do not deal in treasure maps here.
If you've an interest in the history of this place, however, I am happy to oblige."
Please do. I'm interested.
"The city's history is … complex. It has changed hands many times. Breton graves are buiilt [sic] atop Redguard graves. Orc-hewn stone supports Yokudan-style walls.
Even so, at its heart the city is Redguard. One of our greatest victories occurred here."
What was that?
"This is the site of Derik Hallin's final confrontation with the giant Goblin Mahgzoor Rockhand.
After the Ra Gada's long march to Hammerfell, the Yokudans found themselves in a time of relative peace and plenty. Many and many cast down their swords."
They did?
"It was. Their love of farming and building made them blind to danger. They were set upon by legions of tusked ones, led by a powerful warlord, Mahgzoor. But they had forgotten the way of the sword and stood defenseless."
Go on.
"Knowing his people would be slaughtered if they remained, a wise and powerful warrior named Hallin, the last Ansei, sent them away and chose to protect the city alone.
Some say he was aided by the spirits of long-dead Ansei. Perhaps he was."
What happened next?
"He fought for seventeen bloody days until at last he faced the dreaded Mahgzoor in single combat.
After many long hours, the Goblin struck a killing blow, but Hallin smote his enemy as he fell. As fine a death as any Redguard could aspire to."
So they named the city after him?
"Just so. His sacrifice is remembered even now. The city, which formerly bore the name Ojwambu, was renamed Hallin's Stand to honor his great courage.
Ah. Hallin's story stirs the blood no matter how many times I tell it."
