Prior to accepting the quest, Henaril can be found alive.

"Xarxes guide me! I must find a way to save them."

When you speak to him, he'll say:

"My prayers are answered!
Please, lend me your talents for a time. My comrades have been captured."
What happened?
"Maormer raiding parties attacked and boarded our ship in the midst of a black fog.
In the chaos, I saw them kill many of my shipmates. So many dead."
Did anyone else survive?
"Yes! I dove into the water and swam ashore. I turned back and saw the captain and a few others being bound and taken away.
The Maormer must plan to interrogate them. Please you must help them!"
I'll rescue the captives.

You can ask him some additional questions at this point:

"The Maormer will interrogate the crew, and their methods are very unpleasant!"

What do you know about this area?
"The Maormer made several camps along the beach. The survivors were split up for interrogation while the others search our ship."
Who should I look for?
"I know the Maormer took Carpenter Curissil and Striker Aldewe, and I'm fairly sure they captured the bosun and quartermaster too.
They also took First Mate Valion and Captain Seritenya."
Why was the ship so close to the shore?
"It was the fog. Thick as the forest, and black as ink. We couldn't see, so kept closer to shore than usual to follow the lights.
Maormer lights, as it happened, not the shore markers we'd thought they were."

Henaril does not survive the attack by the Maormer at the end of The Captain's Honor, but his comrade, Seaman Ambaran, stays by his side and vows to not let his memory die.
